Transmigration: On the Gossip Front-Chapter 1865 - 1866: Female Intellectual Youth Passing By 8
After Zhang Yu arrived home, she got busy with preparing the fish and handling the side dishes. By the time Zhang Wei and the others returned home from work, the food was ready, and the fish soup had been cool for quite some time.
As soon as Yao Ying got home, she was about to head to the kitchen when Zhang Yu called out to her, "Mom, I’ve already prepared dinner."
"Ah?" Yao Ying was momentarily stunned, "You cooked? What did you make?"
"I just made one dish today, fish soup." Zhang Yu pulled Yao Ying to the table and directly took off the lid of the soup pot.
Upon hearing they were having fish soup, Yao Ying immediately knew her daughter had gone fishing again. They all knew that Zhang Yu went fishing every day, thinking it was better for the little girl to go out and about than staying cooped up at home all the time.
Previously, Zhang Yu had brought home fish that were not quite big, but this time they were curious about the size of the fish.
Zhang Wei and the others knew there was fish soup for dinner today, so they leaned in to see how big the fish was.
They were astonished when they looked; the fish in the soup pot was surprisingly big—although it wasn’t very clear, it was certain that this fish was not small.
What surprised them even more was that there wasn’t just one fish in the pot. There were several. "Sis, did you have a good haul today?"
Zhang Yu responded with a proud tone, "Of course."
Alongside, she placed all the tickets she had accumulated these days in an empty spot on the table, "I told you I’m really skilled at fishing."
Zhang Wei and Yao Ying hadn’t yet recovered from the surprise of their daughter catching such big fish, when they were again stunned by the stack of tickets on the table.
Zhang Jie looked at the tickets with amazement, "Sis, where did you get these tickets?"
The two glanced at each other, their expressions turning serious.
"They can only come from there," she said while noting the surprised and worried look from Zhang Wei and Yao Ying, "You forgot your sister is good at fishing."
Zhang Jie was so surprised his eyes went wide, "Sis, are you telling me you earned these tickets by fishing?"
Zhang Yu nodded, "That’s right."
Earning tickets this way was quite unexpected; Zhang Wei couldn’t help but feel relieved. He had heard that if someone wanted to eat fish, they could go to the riverbank and sometimes fish could be exchanged for tickets.
He hadn’t expected his daughter to not only catch fish but also exchange them for tickets. After thinking for a long time, Zhang Wei asked, "Little Yu, how many fish did you catch?"
Yao Ying and Zhang Jie both turned to look at Zhang Yu, eager to know as well.
Zhang Yu recounted her haul over the past few days, leaving Zhang Jie and the others in shock, "Oh my, so much catch."
Zhang Wei was bewildered, "Is it really that easy to catch fish?"
Zhang Yu shook her head, "Not easy at all. Many people catch nothing or only catch small fish."
"Sis, how come you can catch big fish," Zhang Jie asked confused, as even seasoned fishers struggle with catching large fish, so why could Zhang Yu?
"Because my bait has a secret recipe," Zhang Yu explained her secret, "Once I’m posted to the countryside, Xiao Jie can go fishing on weekends too."
"Then you can keep them at home, and pickle them when the weather gets cold," Zhang Yu added, since they had been really good to the original owner, though later the original owner continuously made mistakes, which made them cold-hearted towards her.
Zhang Jie nodded enthusiastically, "Alright, alright, sis, I’ll mail you the pickled fish pieces." Saying this he chuckled, "I forgot you’ll be able to fish there to improve your meals."
Improving meals by fishing? The original owner used to cook herself, but the canteen meals were just cooked enough to be edible, primarily for convenience.
Finding it hard to adapt, under Wang Yan’s encouragement, she began cooking on her own, saying they should pool resources together. But the results were the original owner did all the cooking, sourced all the ingredients, cleaned the dishes, and Wang Yan only showed up to eat, leaving after she was done, without paying a dime, and even criticized the food.
The original owner had gotten used to being put down by Wang Yan, silently enduring. However, that changed now, she wouldn’t tolerate it; the canteen’s meals were at least edible.
"I might fish on weekends for relaxation too. I’ll just do some salt baking," Zhang Yu had already planned.
"That works too," Zhang Jie thought about it, realizing if Zhang Yu cooked herself, people would definitely come over to ask for shared meals, probably without paying.
While the siblings chatted, Yao Ying finished organizing the tickets. Seeing them all sorted out, she was stunned, "So many food coupons, oil coupons, cotton tickets, and industrial coupons."
"Yes, the food coupons and oil coupons, along with the cotton tickets, were given by Brother Fatty, who is a logistics manager at a major factory."
"Next time on your day off, you might..." Zhang Yu thought it would be beneficial for her brother to meet more people, especially since the other party was a logistics manager. "You could make a deal if you catch big fish on weekends."
The family didn’t lack money, but they were short on tickets, "How about..."
Zhang Wei felt it wasn’t necessary, but Zhang Jie thought it over and agreed, "Thanks, sis."
Zhang Jie’s thought was that having more tickets would allow him to buy stuff for Zhang Yu more freely. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
Seeing the siblings had already discussed it, Zhang Wei, despite having objections, didn’t voice them.
The huge pot of fish, Zhang Yu wondered if it would all be eaten. With the weather being so hot, leftovers wouldn’t last. But surprisingly, it was all consumed, not even a drop of soup remained.
Zhang Jie patted his slightly bloated stomach, "Delicious."
Zhang Wei and Yao Ying also felt today’s meal was exceptionally satisfying and fulfilling.
"Tomorrow I’ll make braised fish," since oil coupons were now accessible, Zhang Yu thought about making braised fish the next day.
"Great." Even having eaten a lot today, Zhang Jie was more than happy with the idea of braised fish for tomorrow.
Zhang Wei always thought he didn’t have many desires for food, but after eating Zhang Yu’s fish soup today, he realized it wasn’t his desires that were low, but rather the previous meals weren’t flavorful enough to stir any anticipation.
Today, having tasted something delicious, he was sure he liked eating good food.
Zhang Jie recalled what the neighbor had mentioned before he entered the house, "Sis, Wang Yan came looking for you today."
Though he didn’t quite want to mention it, with neighbors having seen it, it couldn’t be kept secret.
"Why was she looking for me?" Zhang Yu started pacing slightly in the room, since she needed help digesting from having overeaten a little.
As for why she didn’t go downstairs, the reason was simple. Given the big haul she had today, she figured people were probably discussing her. If they saw her, she’d be bombarded with questions.
"I don’t know," Zhang Jie watched Zhang Yu, noticing she wasn’t at all anxious, which made him relax slightly.
"It should be nothing important," Zhang Yu thought for a moment, "If it isn’t about borrowing money, then what else could it be?"
Zhang Yu pointed out that borrowing money was the most likely reason Wang Yan would look for her, "Anyway, I don’t have much money on hand right now."
Especially since purchasing fishing rods and such required money even if opting for cheaper choices.
Hearing her daughter had little money, Yao Ying’s first reaction was to fetch some.
Previously, Zhang Jie would have stopped her, worried the money would end up elsewhere, but now he didn’t intervene, feeling Zhang Yu had changed and wasn’t easily swayed by Wang Yan anymore.
