Chapter 370: Chapter 246: Second Lady’s Thoughts (Part 3)

"Yes, it’s soon, and it’s not just the bamboo rats, two hens have also begun nesting today."

Jiang Hu said, letting out a long breath, finally feeling completely relieved.

Anyway, as long as they start breeding, that’s all that matters. As for the rest, there’s no rush, take it slowly.

Then Jiang Hu scattered a handful of sorghum rice and some tender wild grass to the big bird next to him.

So far, no one knows what this big bird is called. It’s been raised for half a year and there’s still no sign of laying eggs.

Xiaomi listened to her father’s muttering and silently answered in her heart, "Don’t say half a year, it might take another two years to lay eggs."

The current peacock, with its large body, long neck, small head, and dull gray color, is nothing like the beautiful adult peacock.

Instead, its physique is almost as big as a newly grown chicken, scratching the ground every day and occasionally flapping its wings like it wants to fly.

Every time this happens, Xiaomi wants to sigh; she shouldn’t have brought them all home in the first place, she should have kept half of them in the space for raising.

Fortunately, her parents didn’t mind that the peacock was only eating and not laying eggs. Sometimes when they discussed it, they were more curious about what this bird actually was.

As for the food it consumes daily, the couple is not particularly concerned. After all, with Xiaomi checking on them three times a day, these big birds should be well taken care of.

During dinner, Xiaomi told her second mother about how Xiaocao’s parents were also going to dig bamboo shoots.

Second Mother pondered after hearing this, "Xiaocao? Is that the one you mentioned yesterday, the child whose family raises the sow?"

"Yes, Mom, do you want to buy a piglet? Xiaocao said their sow is expected to have piglets next autumn."

Xiaomi was just mentioning it casually, but to her surprise, Second Mother nodded thoughtfully.

"Indeed, there are still a lot of areas in the village that can be cultivated. If we hire long-term labor, plant more crops, we can definitely raise a few sows."

Raising pigs is quite profitable. If done well, a pig can weigh two to three hundred pounds, and as long as you plant more sweet potatoes, there’s no worry about food.

As Second Mother talked about her plans to raise pigs, such as building a pig shelter behind the cattle pen and planting several acres of sweet potatoes this year.

Right now, we just need to buy two small sows first. It’ll take a year to raise them to breeding age, and by then, the collected pig grass should be sufficient.

Uncle Liu, listening to their discussion, said, "You just arrived in Xiangmu Village and aren’t familiar with the surrounding villages. How about I have someone help you find and sell pigs more quickly?"

If he sent someone to seek them out, suitable small sows could be decided on in a few days, but this suggestion was politely declined by Second Mother.

"Thank you, Uncle Liu, but there’s no rush; we haven’t even built a pigsty yet. Building a pigsty is one thing, but digging a manure pit will take quite some time."

"Besides, didn’t Xiaomi say so? Xiaocao’s mother is going to dig bamboo shoots this afternoon. I’ll accompany Xiaomi, and I’ll ask her then. If we can buy some nearby, that’d be better."

After all, they haven’t been in Xiangmu Village for too long. Among villagers, even if you don’t interact too closely, you still need to get acquainted.

If there are trade transactions, it’s easier to find common topics and strengthen relationships.

Since Second Mother said so, Uncle Liu didn’t insist further.

Though it isn’t quite summer yet, everyone is habitually sleepy after meals, so after eating, they went back to their rooms to rest and would head to the mountains later.

Uncle Liu is getting older, and going up the mountain is tiring for him, so he stayed home to rest; Aunt Yang and Qi Xi would look after him, letting him fish and stroll.

However, Uncle Liu felt pretty good, full of vigor daily. In his words, ever since he arrived at the Jiang family, his health has improved; even with fluctuating temperatures, he hasn’t caught a cold.

Jiang Hu also felt that Uncle Liu’s energy had improved significantly since they first met this year.

Despite this improvement, going to the mountains would still be dangerous for the elderly, especially since the mountain isn’t low. According to Xiaomi, the bamboo forest is quite far away.

Xiaomi was likely the most energetic one in the family, and since she overslept in the morning, she practiced swordplay in her room until it was time to meet Xiaocao.

Jiang Hu and Second Mother had packed up, with hoes and baskets, ready to go at any time.

"Awake? Let’s go, we’ll check things out first."

Second Mother waved at Xiaomi, who jogged over, "Xiaocao should be coming soon. We agreed on the time."

The three of them went out through the back door, mainly because the front gate was too large. Opening it took a lot of effort, so it was easier to circle around from the back.

Just as they rounded the front, they saw Xiaocao also leading a couple over. Xiaocao led in the front, squinting in the sunlight.

Seeing Xiaomi, Xiaocao instantly jumped with excitement and ran over, "Xiaomi!"
