Chapter 51: Chapter 51: I’m Just Acting on Instinct

Winston Valentine let out a cold laugh, his gaze sweeping over Miles Monroe, "What, do I need to explain to Counselor Monroe, an outsider, where I’m taking my wife?"

Miles Monroe looked at him with disdain, "How rare, President Valentine still remembers Vera is your wife!"

Winston Valentine’s gaze fell on Vera Yves, becoming even colder, "Is Counselor Monroe hoping I prove right now that she is my wife?"

Hearing the threat in his words, Vera Yves’s face turned pale, and she smiled at Miles Monroe, "Miles, I’m fine, it’s getting late, you should go home and rest early."

There was a bit of a plea in her eyes, she didn’t want to lay her embarrassment bare before him.

Miles Monroe finally let go.

Winston Valentine watched the "entwined" look between the two, his face darkening.

After getting her into the car, Winston Valentine closed his eyes to rest, his mind replaying scenes of her shielding Miles Monroe.

Clearly, he was the one who got hit first, yet she acted like he was some unforgivable villain.

Gazing out the car window at the scenery, Vera Yves couldn’t understand how he came back so quickly, would Cecilia Vaughn be okay with it?

They arrived at the villa.

The two of them went upstairs one after the other.

Vera Yves returned to the bedroom, while Winston Valentine went to the study.

After a shower, Vera Yves lay on the bed, and her phone beeped with a message from Miles Monroe—Vera, no matter what happens, you can always rely on me.

Vera Yves tightened her grip on the phone, staring at the message, her eyes starting to water.

She once thought she could always lean on him, only to later realize it was just her wishful thinking.

Suddenly, her phone was taken away, and Vera Yves sat up, looking at him with some tension.

Winston Valentine casually tossed her phone onto a nearby cabinet, his dark eyes fixed on her, "What are you afraid of?"

Vera Yves avoided his gaze, "What would I be afraid of?"

"Openly defending another man." Winston Valentine approached her, "Mrs. Valentine seems to have forgotten her own status."

Vera Yves looked at him defiantly, "Haven’t you always openly defended another woman?"

"So, are you retaliating against me?"

Vera Yves was calm, "I’m just acting out of instinct."

Winston Valentine grasped her chin, making her look up, "Say that again if you dare!"

Vera Yves was about to speak when her lips were sealed with a kiss.

She pushed against him hard, but couldn’t move him an inch.

Her clothes were in disarray from his tugging, causing Vera Yves to think of the baby inside, prompting her to resist more fiercely, "Don’t touch me!"

Winston Valentine pinned her down, restraining her wrists above her head, his dark eyes burning with anger, "What, now that Miles Monroe is back, you’re playing the chaste martyr with me?"

"What goes on between us has nothing to do with him!"

"Nothing to do with him, indeed!" Winston Valentine looked at her stubborn face, even angrier, "Then why do you protect him? Why do you apply medicine to him?"

"He did it for me!" Vera Yves looked at him displeased, "Besides, if you hadn’t stood up for Cecilia Vaughn, he wouldn’t have hit you!"

"What right does he have to do it for you?"

"Because he’s the brother who watched me grow up!"

"Some brother!" Winston Valentine was so angry his chest heaved violently, "Let me warn you, as long as you are Mrs. Valentine, you maintain the duties of Mrs. Valentine!"

Vera Yves was serene, "In the three years of our marriage, have I ever neglected the duties of being Mrs. Valentine?"

Winston Valentine sneered, "Why not ask your heart if you’ve ever truly acted as Mrs. Valentine, not even for a day!"

In his eyes, her years of effort meant nothing.

Vera Yves’s eyes reddened, "If you dislike me so much, why did you come back to save me?"

His finger brushed past the corner of her eye, "Maybe I caught your stupidity, so I did something foolish too!"

Winston Valentine claimed her lips dominantly, leaving her no chance to resist.

Instinctively, Vera Yves pushed against his arms, only to feel a wetness, did his wound split open?

Detecting her distraction, Winston Valentine grasped her chin.

"Your wound is bleeding, it needs to be rewrapped."

"Do you care?"

He got injured for her, how could she not care?

"Get up first, let me re-dress your wound."

Vera Yves struggled to push him away, retrieving the first-aid kit before sitting by the bed.

She removed the blood-soaked bandages, disinfected the wound, applied medicine, and rewrapped it.

Winston Valentine lowered his head, watching her rosy face, thinking of the bench scene, was she this gentle when treating Miles Monroe too?

Noticing the wound on his lips, Vera Yves also disinfected it, her hand’s strength increasing at the thought of him leaving with Cecilia Vaughn.

Winston Valentine winced from the pain, grabbing her wrist, "What, getting revenge for your Miles?"

Vera Yves withdrew her hand without answering, tidying up the supplies.

Winston Valentine wrapped his arms around her from behind, "Don’t apply medicine to him again."

In his domineering words, there was a hint of childishness; she certainly didn’t think it was out of affection, rather she was like his toy, to be kept unless it seemed threatened, prompting this possessive manner.

The next morning, Vera Yves went to the hospital.

Samantha Warren saw Vera Yves, grinding her teeth in anger, "What are you doing here? You’re not welcome!"

Vera Yves remained calm, "Why don’t you ask Cecilia Vaughn, I believe she would like to see me."

In the hospital room, Cecilia Vaughn heard Vera Yves’s voice and called Samantha Warren in. Soon, Samantha Warren reluctantly exited the room.

Vera Yves walked into the hospital room.

Cecilia Vaughn looked at her with disdain, "If you’re here to apologize, don’t bother; Winston has already said he’ll get justice for me."

"His way of getting justice for you is to take me to a class reunion, declare my identity, and then sleep with me?"

Cecilia Vaughn looked at her in disbelief, "Impossible!"

"Why not? You knew, otherwise you wouldn’t have left the hospital at night to make your presence known."

Cecilia Vaughn clenched her fists tightly, "He only pretended with you!"

"Really? Then do you know why he got hurt?" Vera Yves smiled, "He got hurt saving me. When you went missing, he was right by my side."

Cecilia Vaughn tightened her grip on the bedsheet viciously, "Impossible! You’re just a scheming woman, Winston would never leave me for you!"

"As for scheming, how could I compare to you?" Vera Yves sneered, "Back then, when Mark Yves held you to scare you, you didn’t hesitate to compromise your own integrity to frame Mark, to set me up! Now, you’re pulling the same tricks, trying to pin everything on me, right?"

Vera Yves maintained her composure, "But, you can’t walk by the river without getting your shoes wet. Do you think Winston Valentine will always remain fooled by you?"

Remembering Winston Valentine’s newfound coldness towards her, Cecilia Vaughn was shaken.

"Impossible! There’s no way Winston could know! You’re not going to scare me!"

Vera Yves heard her lack of denial and felt relieved, "He may not have known before, but he won’t be unaware now."

"What do you mean?" Cecilia Vaughn looked at her, shocked, "Vera Yves, you’re setting me up!"
