Together Apart: Her White Moonlight Has Returned Too-Chapter 176: A Wild Beast
Vera Yves was taken aback for a moment, so Old Mrs. Valentine’s appearance at the villa was no coincidence. Is this what he meant by going with the flow?
Someone called her from behind, "Sister-in-law, want to go upstairs and play pool?"
Vera snapped back to reality, "You guys go ahead, don’t mind me."
Vera turned to walk back, and someone chased after her; Winston Valentine grabbed her arm, "Why aren’t you playing cards anymore?"
Vera glanced at him, "I’m not supposed to smoke or drink while on medication."
Winston, seeing her cold expression, couldn’t help but say, "Someone else gave it to me, I just smoked this one."
Vera frowned in disdain and pushed his hand away.
"Did you hear that?"
"Are you afraid I heard it?" Vera’s voice was indifferent, "Just because you’d risk your life for me doesn’t mean you wouldn’t use me."
"Vera, I’m with you because I like you," Winston gripped her shoulders seriously, "No other reason, I wouldn’t use you like I would someone else."
Upon hearing this, Vera felt her heart soften a bit.
Winston caressed her cheek, "Are you coming back to the villa with me tonight?"
Vera dodged his hand, "I have to go home, otherwise I can’t explain to my mom."
"You’re twenty-eight, not eighteen, can’t you come up with a random excuse?"
Isn’t she doing just that?
Too bad he couldn’t understand.
"I have to go home."
"Then go back, find an excuse, and move out."
Vera glared at him irritably, "No, I won’t."
Winston lowered his head, pressing his forehead against hers, his voice hoarse, "How could you be so heartless, don’t you miss me at all?"
"I don’t."
Winston squeezed her cheek in frustration, "You’re just trying to make me angry."
When Vera got home, Hannah Hayes was applying a facial mask. Seeing Vera return, she sized her up, "Why did you change your clothes if you just went to Linda’s?"
"My clothes got dirty with alcohol."
"Why do I find those clothes a bit familiar?"
"Really?" Vera felt a bit guilty as she tried to head upstairs.
Hannah blocked her way, "Tell me the truth, where exactly did you spend the night?"
Vera didn’t know how to respond immediately.
Hannah snorted coldly, "Were you with Winston Valentine?"
Vera remained silent, and Hannah sighed, "Men, when you’re there for them, they think you’re insignificant, but when you leave, they find you precious. Believe me, once he has you again, he’ll take you for granted like before."
"You can’t handle a man like him. Just have fun, but don’t take it seriously."
Vera was a bit surprised. She thought her mom would urge her to stay away from Winston Valentine, but instead, she suggested having fun, as if she wanted to live dangerously.
Early the next morning, Vera got a call from Linda Young and went to handle the property transfer with the buyer.
The moment the house changed ownership, Vera felt a bit empty inside. Her time with Miles Monroe was less than three months, just like a fleeting dream, and now as she woke up, there was nothing but a sense of loss.
In the afternoon, Vera went to the studio rented by the show crew to try on outfits and take promotional photos.
Vera tried on all the cheongsams she had chosen; her figure was already impeccable, and the cheongsam highlighted her curves. Practically every change of outfit drew gasps of admiration.
The staff member liaising with her, Young Johnson, looked at her with envy, "Miss Yves, you’re truly the woman I’ve seen who looks best in a cheongsam."
Vera felt a bit embarrassed by the compliment.
The stylist gave her a makeover, crafting a look that was both intellectual and gentle.
The photographer kept pressing the shutter, taking numerous photos of her. By the time Vera finished, it was already past seven in the evening. She changed back into her clothes and took out her phone from her bag, seeing several missed calls from Winston Valentine.
In the villa.
Winston Valentine sat by the dining table, looking at the now slightly cold dishes.
Thinking about those missed calls, he suddenly wondered if many times, post-marriage, she might also have been sitting by a table, calling him with a phone he would never answer.
Back then, he was convinced she was being insincere. He believed she’d be understanding and gentle with any man, so he usually ignored her calls.
What was her state of mind back then?
The phone started ringing, snapping Winston out of his thoughts, and he answered.
Vera’s voice carried a hint of guilt, "I just finished up."
Winston’s voice was gentle, "Are you tired?"
"Not too much." Vera thought he would blame her, "Did you need something?"
"Yes." Winston lowered his voice, "I miss you."
Vera, unable to handle his straightforwardness, changed the topic, "Have you eaten?"
"Where are you? I’ll come pick you up, and we can eat together."
Vera glanced at the time, knowing he must have been waiting for her all along, she reported her location.
Because she had put on heavy makeup for the promotional photo shoot, she looked especially alluring.
Seeing her, Winston wanted to hide her away from everyone.
In the car, Vera explained, "I couldn’t bring my phone during the shoot, it wasn’t on purpose that I missed your calls."
Winston pulled her into his arms, "Want me to get you an assistant?"
Vera shook her head. She didn’t have plans to hire an assistant yet; she only needed to film six episodes for this program.
"Linda mentioned there’s a new hotpot place on North Street, she said it’s pretty good." Vera looked up at him, "Shall we try it?"
Winston looked at her alluring lips, "Let me try something else first."
Vera looked at him, confused, but when she saw the intense heat in his eyes, she instinctively wanted to avoid it.
Winston pressed his hand on her waist, "Vera, I’m not a monster, don’t dodge me, okay?"
Seeing the hurt in his eyes, Vera obediently stopped moving.
His warm lips came closer, and Vera closed her eyes.
The lingering kiss slowly ate away at her rationality.
Half an hour later, the car stopped outside the restaurant, and as Vera adjusted her clothes, she cursed in her mind. He said he wasn’t a monster.
She must have been out of her mind to think this man was pitiable.
After dinner, Winston wanted to take her back to the villa, but no matter what Vera refused. Seeing him about to use that look again, Vera shut her eyes, refusing to communicate with him further.
Winston had no choice but to instruct the driver to head to The Yves Family’s home, not forgetting to grumble, "I’m not going to eat you."
Vera didn’t even bother to give him a glance.
Thanks to over three years of married life, this man knew exactly how to provoke her. Although she mentally didn’t want to be too close to him, he always managed to make her fall easily.
When Vera got home, a WeChat friend request popped up, the note saying it was Nathan Norton.
Vera didn’t accept it but called Linda Young instead.
"Nathan’s a pretty good kid. I think he genuinely likes you and wants to pursue you. Why not give it a try?"
Vera was silent for a moment and then told her about reconciling with Winston Valentine.
Linda thought she misheard, "Vera, even if you reconciled with Miles Monroe, I wouldn’t be this surprised. Are you out of your mind? Did you forget how he forced you to have an abortion back then!"
