Chapter 173: Chapter 173: Guilt

Vera Yves came to her senses, a date? Vera couldn’t imagine a scenario where she would go on a date with Winston Valentine, but she still agreed.

Since she agreed to start over with him, she knew she should also make some effort.

The car stopped outside the Hillside Villa. Vera got out and saw Winston following her out of the car, a bit surprised, "Are you going in too?"

Winston looked at the villa in front of him, a bit curious, "Are you worried about me, or worried about someone else?"

"What is there to worry about?"

Winston pinched her cheek, "Besides me, who else is worth worrying about here?"

"Ridiculous!" Vera slapped away his hand.

Winston quietly asked her, "You were treating her, did you develop feelings?"

Vera replied earnestly, "Winston, putting aside our relationship, it’s difficult for me to dislike her. In my eyes, she isn’t a person with unforgivable sins, and she’s been very good to me."

"So do you like her?"

"She makes me feel warm." Vera looked at him, "But I don’t really like her. Winston, I know you don’t like me treating her. I’ll adjust her treatment plan and try to minimize contact with her in the future."

"No need." Winston met her gaze, "You should meet her when you need to, don’t worry about me."

Vera was somewhat incredulous, thinking he might be sarcastic, but his tone didn’t feel like it.

"Are you serious?"

"Of course, it’s true."

Wasn’t he the one who hated her having contact with Cleo Sutton? Suddenly changing his attitude?

Vera shook her head and walked over, rang the doorbell, and soon a servant opened the door for her.

Seeing the man behind Vera, the servant was a bit surprised and didn’t let him in.

Vera lowered her voice, "Winston, this is enough. You can leave now."

Winston no longer followed her. Seeing her enter, he told the servant, "I’m looking for Mr. Valentine, please let him know."

When Vera walked into the living room, Tristan Valentine and Cleo Sutton had just returned from a walk in the backyard. Cleo smiled gently at Vera, "Dr. Yves, you’re here."

Vera walked over to her and supported her arm.

The servant walked over to Tristan and whispered a few words to him. Tristan looked at Vera, "Vera, accompany her upstairs first. I need to go out for a bit."

Vera nodded and helped Cleo up to the second floor.

A servant approached them, "Ma’am, the wedding dress is ready."

Cleo nodded, "Thank you for your hard work."

Cleo looked at Vera, "Dr. Yves, would you like to see my wedding dress?"

Vera remembered the beautiful dress design and curious about the final product, she nodded.

The two of them walked into the guest room.

The white wedding dress stood in the middle of the living room, the large fan-shaped tail almost filled the entire room. Sunlight spilled through the window, making the dress appear even more sacred.

Vera was amazed. The wedding dress Cleo had previously given her was already beautiful. Even though this dress was simple in style, every detail was meticulously crafted, radiating a sweet atmosphere.

"Has the wedding date been set?"

"Yes." Cleo coughed, "But, his divorce hasn’t been finalized yet. If the wedding can go smoothly, may I invite you to attend?"

Vera hesitated, she now had to consider Winston’s feelings as they were together.

Cleo smiled apologetically, "I’m sorry for making things difficult for you."

Cleo coughed a few more times, Vera helped soothe her back and then assisted her back to the bedroom.

Sunshine warmed the bed, Cleo looked out the window and squinted, "The first time I met him, the weather was just as nice."

Vera prepared her acupuncture supplies.

Cleo smiled at her, "I was rushing to go to class and accidentally hit him with my bicycle, tearing his pants. I was in a hurry and wanted to leave my contact details for later compensation. But he disdainfully looked at me and told me this kind of flirting was outdated."

Vera couldn’t help but think, if Winston encountered such a situation, he would probably say the same thing.

"I didn’t even get a clear look at him." Cleo’s eyes were filled with nostalgic tenderness, "Since he refused to give me his contact information, I had to give him the only thirty yuan in my pocket. Can you guess what he said?"

"He said thirty yuan isn’t enough to buy his pant cuffs." Cleo laughed, "Isn’t he infuriating?"

Vera also couldn’t help but laugh.

"That was my month’s living expense." Cleo sighed, "Actually, at that time, I should’ve realized that we weren’t from the same world."

Cleo looked at Vera, "Maybe without meeting, our lives would have been better."

"Do you regret it?"

Cleo held her hand, "Occasionally, I sigh, but I don’t regret it. Sometimes love is something you encounter, not something you pursue."

Vera felt a bit absurd discussing love with a third party.

Yet she couldn’t help but be curious, what kind of love made her willing to be a third party for so many years?

After finishing Cleo’s treatment, Vera went downstairs.

Tristan had just entered the living room; his expression looked somewhat awful, which surprised Vera as men of their status and position usually kept their emotions in check.

Seeing Vera, Tristan’s expression eased a bit, "If the wedding is postponed to the second half of the year, can Cleo’s health hold up?"

"Ideally, it can." Vera hesitated, "But her body is severely depleted. Long-term treatment has caused irreversible damage to her digestive system, whether through food or medicine, her nutrient absorption is limited."

Upon hearing this, Tristan’s expression darkened further.

When Vera left the Hillside Villa, Winston had already gone to the office. She hailed a taxi and gave the address of The Yves Villa.

Encountered a traffic jam on the road, the driver took a detour, and Vera looked out the window and saw the city’s hospital building.

Vera hesitated for a moment, then asked the driver to stop.

Vera bought a fruit basket outside the hospital and walked to the inpatient department downstairs; she was just passing by and wanted to make sure he was fine.

Vera took a deep breath and walked in.

Watching the elevator numbers rise floor by floor, Winston’s resentful eyes flashed through Vera’s mind, leaving her feeling a bit guilty.

"Ding!" The elevator doors opened.

Vera hesitated for a moment, then pressed the button for the first floor.

"Vera?"

Zoe Monroe’s voice sounded, and before Vera could react, Zoe pulled her out of the elevator, "Vera, I knew you still care about my cousin!"

Zoe enthusiastically took the fruit basket from her hand and linked arms with her, as if afraid she would run away.

"Is he okay?"

"He had surgery last night and is still lying in bed. The doctor said he needs at least three days before he can get out of bed."

Vera didn’t expect him to be that seriously ill.

Zoe brought her into the hospital room, where Miles Monroe lay on the bed, eyes closed, still asleep, his face devoid of color.

Zoe whispered in her ear, "My cousin can’t be left alone right now, Vera, could you watch him for a while? I’m going downstairs to get some stuff."

Before Vera could say anything, Zoe had already slipped out.

Feeling a bit helpless, Vera walked to the bedside and heard Miles mumble a sound, "Water."

Vera poured a glass of water, then dipped a cotton swab to moisten his dry lips bit by bit.

Putting the glass aside, Vera looked up and met Miles’ gaze.

"You’re awake."

Seeing Miles not speak, Vera felt a bit embarrassed, "If you don’t want to see me, I’ll leave when Zoe returns."

Miles suddenly raised his hand, gently touching her cheek.
