Chapter 127: Chapter 127: Not a Trace Left

"Don’t use alcohol as an excuse to act crazy!"

Winston Valentine looked at her flushed face from anger, "I helped you and was just taking you home on the way, does Miles Monroe even get jealous of this?"

Vera Yves’s chest heaved with anger, "You rogue!"

"I can be even more of a rogue, do you believe it?"

The sudden ringing of a phone interrupted them. Vera took out her phone, but before she could answer, Winston snatched it away, "It’s Miles Monroe calling, why don’t I ask him if he agrees with you sending me back?"

"Winston Valentine!" Vera hurriedly reached to grab the phone.

Winston deliberately avoided her, pulling her into his embrace. Just as Vera was about to lash out, he connected the call and turned on the speakerphone.

From the other side of the phone came Miles’s gentle voice, "Vera, it was too noisy in the room just now, so I didn’t hear—anything wrong?"

Vera glared at Winston, signaling him to let go.

Winston pretended to speak, but Vera hastily covered his mouth, "N-no... nothing’s wrong, just wanted to tell you not to drink too much, or you’ll feel sick tonight."

Feeling the warmth of his lips, Vera quickly withdrew her hand as if scalded.

Winston inhaled the faint scent from her, his grip firm on her waist.

Vera pushed his hand away, warning him with her gaze.

"Got it. Are you hungry? Want me to order some food for you?" 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

"No need." Vera straightened up, attempting to create some distance between them, but with a "thud!" her head bumped against the door frame, and she let out a hurtful "ah," her eyes immediately pooling with tears.

"Vera, what’s wrong?"

"Just... accidentally bumped into the door frame."

"Does it hurt?"

Vera rubbed her head, finally snatching the phone back and turning off the speaker, "It doesn’t hurt anymore, head home early after the party."

"Alright, you rest early too."

Just as Vera was about to hang up, she heard someone on the other side laughing and saying, "Counselor Monroe, Jane Shea has arrived..."

The call cut off, leaving Vera wondering if she had imagined it.

With the man’s arms like a wall of steel, Vera glared at him with frustration, "Winston Valentine, will you let go or not?"

Seeing the unmistakable contempt in her eyes, Winston loosened his grip.

Vera fled from the car, "If you don’t get out, I’ll call Old Mrs. Valentine to come pick you up herself."

Winston stepped out of the car, "So you can lie too."

Vera extended her hand to him, "Give me the car keys."

Winston placed the car keys into her hand, "Aren’t you curious who Miles Monroe is with now?"

Vera shot him a cold look, "At least he won’t be like you, getting married soon but still harassing your ex-wife!"

"Vera..." Winston gazed at her indifferent expression, "Is there truly none of me left in your heart? Not even a trace?"

Vera met his gaze, speaking frankly, "Everyone knows how to avoid harm and seek benefit. After three years of marriage, what did you give me? Besides hurt and humiliation, you tell me if I still have you in my heart?"

Without looking back, Vera got into her car. Winston watched her car silhouette grow faint, his gaze darkening.

Such tenderness was once his, but now she freely gives it to another man.

Not far away, Wendy Jennings sent photos to Cecilia Vaughn, "Cecilia, have you finalized the wedding arrangements with Winston yet? Why is he still tangled up with his ex-wife?"

Cecilia viewed the photos she sent, opening them one by one. Due to the dim lighting and poor angles, the photos weren’t very clear, only showing two people squeezed into the passenger seat as if embracing, but upon closer inspection seemed to be in some dispute.

Returning to the apartment, Vera showered again, detesting the lingering scent of him on her.

A little past midnight, Miles Monroe texted her to say he’d arrived home safely.

Vera recalled the kiss in the chess room and sent him a goodnight bunny emoji.

Miles responded with another, and looking at the emoji, Vera’s heart gradually calmed.

In the following days, Vera visited several Wellspring Pharmacy branches, buying the same medicinal herbs, and upon returning to the apartment, she identified each herb.

She discovered that the quality of these herbs varied, with two stores selling counterfeit ones.

She also purchased Wellspring’s star products online, noticing they were mostly nutritional and health Chinese medicines labeled as preventing various diseases.

The prices easily exceeded a thousand per box, yet because they were backed by many veteran Chinese medicine practitioners, they sold quite well.

Zoe Monroe visited the apartment, inviting Vera to attend a ball with her.

"A while ago, while playing games, I found a game buddy, he’s great at jungling. We agreed to meet at the ball tonight."

Afraid Vera might refuse, Zoe added, "It’s not a conventional ball, everyone wears masks, so if he’s too ugly I can just walk away!"

Having studied herbs till she smelled of them, Vera indeed wanted a change of pace, thinking she might meet Luke Shaw at the ball and possibly get some information, she readily agreed.

The two first chose dresses and bought two masks.

Zoe picked a black sleeveless evening gown with a puffy bottom, paired with a cat mask, looking sexy yet cute.

Vera wore a water-blue dress with a silver fox mask, exuding elegance.

Upon reaching outside the ballroom, Zoe was busy with her phone, cooing into it, "My pro jungler, I’m here!" making Vera burst into laughter.

Zoe playfully tickled her, "What, don’t you usually sweet-talk my cousin like that?"

Vera laughed and dodged, "I do not."

"Don’t pretend!" Zoe teased, "Who’s the one that used to call ’Miles’ all the time, chasing after my cousin back then, refusing anyone’s help but his when they fell? You were what, how old then, Vera Yves? You started puppy love pretty early!"

Laughing, the two entered the ballroom.

With everyone masked, the atmosphere in the ballroom was quite relaxed.

Zoe Monroe scanned like a little radar once inside, biting her lip after a sweep, "Why are there so many tiger masks? How will I find him!"

They had agreed she’d be the cat, he the tiger! He was playing tricks!

Vera also searched the crowd, realizing most masks covered only half the face, so recognizing familiar people wasn’t too difficult.

Someone like Luke Shaw, a party-goer, would likely enjoy such balls.

From a short distance, Theodore Xavier easily spotted Zoe Monroe entering the ballroom, calmly seated listening to her voice messages while observing her attire—the sexy little cat.

Winston Valentine, on the other hand, was immediately drawn to Vera Yves, his gaze darkening as it traveled over her alluring figure.

"I heard Jensen Sawyer invited a bunch of his company’s actresses tonight, probably wanting to find supporters for them. After years, he finally groomed Jane Shea, and now Shea’s determined to leave, so he’s anxious to train successors."

Winston took another sip of his drink.

Noticing his distraction, Theodore followed his line of sight to Vera, lowering his voice, "The other day, my grandfather was playing chess with the Monroe family elder, and I heard..."

Seeing Winston pause, Theodore cleared his throat, "Their wedding dates are set, just hasn’t been publicly announced yet—probably scheduled before year’s end."

Winston tightened his grip on his glass, downing his drink in one go, then stood up, moving towards Vera.

Vera searched the crowd, failing to spot Luke Shaw but noticing a familiar figure—Jane Shea.
