Mr. Taylor and Howard Coleman had seen a lot of each other over the past three years and were relatively familiar with one another. After exchanging pleasantries, Mr. Taylor set his gaze on Madeleine, looking somewhat surprised as he said, “I really didn’t expect this. To see an old acquaintance today, Ms. Madeleine, it’s been a long time.”
Madeleine extended her hand gracefully with a light smile and replied, “Mr. Taylor, it’s been a long time indeed.”
With a beaming smile, Mr. Taylor took his seat, studying Madeleine for a moment before saying, “It must have been over three years since I last saw Ms. Madeleine, right? Surprisingly, you haven’t changed a bit since then. It makes me feel as if it’s not been more than three days rather than three years since we last met.”
Madeleine laughed, “So long without seeing each other, and Mr. Taylor still has such a way with words.”
As she said that, Madeleine passed the menu the waiter had handed her to Mr. Taylor. He unreservedly took it from her, didn’t bother ordering any dishes, and instead focused intently on ordering alcohol: “Today, reuniting with Ms. Madeleine is a joyous occasion. We must drink well tonight.”
Then, Mr. Taylor ordered a bottle of wine and two bottles of liquor.
After Mr. Taylor finished ordering the drinks, Howard took the menu and ordered some signature dishes.
–
As soon as the dishes and drinks were served, Mr. Taylor generously filled three large cups with liquor and passed one to Madeleine and one to Howard before raising the last cup to them and saying, “Mr. Coleman, Ms. Madeleine, let’s drink to this!”
As soon as he finished speaking, Mr. Taylor didn’t hesitate to lift his own glass and started to drink it down as if it were plain water.
Howard also raised his head, pouring the fiery liquor down his throat. As he was swallowing, he saw Madeleine elegantly lifting her hand too. Then, suddenly, he reached out and pressed down on her hand.
At the very moment Howard’s fingers touched her wrist, Madeleine’s body trembled slightly. Some of the liquor from her full cup spilled onto her fingers. She hesitated for a second, then instinctively turned her head to look at Howard.
Howard wasn’t looking at her but was tipping his head back, his Adam’s apple moving up and down as he swallowed the liquor in big gulps. Only after putting down his cup did he glance at Madeleine. He reached out, took the cup of liquor she had been holding, and pulled it away. Once Mr. Taylor in front of him had emptied his large cup, Howard finally spoke, “Mr. Taylor, Ms. Madeleine is a lady and can’t drink like us. If she downed such a large glass, she would certainly end up lying here unable to move. So, I’ll drink this one for her.”
With that, Howard raised his head and, without even blinking, downed the liquor that was originally meant for Madeleine in one go.
Mr. Taylor, a man who not only liked to drink to excess but also took every opportunity to urge others to drink, wasted no time. The moment Howard set down his glass, Mr. Taylor grabbed the bottle of liquor and poured it into Howard’s glass, saying, “Mr. Coleman, Ms. Madeleine’s drink can’t just be replaced so casually. You’ll pass the test only after three glasses.”
A hint of worry surfaced in Madeleine’s eyes. Three full glasses of liquor must amount to at least half a liter. The dinner had barely begun, and already they were drinking fiercely. Would Howard end up drunk before the evening was over?
Howard smiled silently, showing no intention of haggling. He picked up his glass once again and drank it all down cleanly.
