Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared-Chapter 536: The Value of Forgiveness
Chapter 536: Chapter 536: The Value of Forgiveness
As usual, Gu Chuanshan and Mei Fang whipped up a casual dinner and were about to have it when Gu Fan unexpectedly returned home. He said that he hadn’t had a drink with his father for a while and suggested they should have a good one together.
Gu Fan’s return took Gu Chuanshan by surprise. He figured the boy had probably come home with the aim of indirectly enquiring about the secrets of the old house.
Mei Fang, tactfully, made the excuse that she needed to go to the market to buy vegetables, giving Gu Fan and Gu Chuanshan some privacy.
The father and son pair started talking over drinks while snacking on peanuts and other dishes.
Gu Chuanshan started the conversation by asking, "How’s work lately? Xiaoling mentioned that you’d found your dream job."
"Work is okay," Gu Fan replied, "but the company is experiencing some operational issues. We’re running at a loss, left with only one boss and one employee – which is me." Hearing this, Gu Chuanshan immediately showed interest, "Why are you even staying? You should look for another job right away."
Gu Fan agreed, "Yeah, I was actually considering changing jobs. You know what, Dad? I’m not only doing secretarial and admin tasks but also cleaning up. When debt collectors show up, I also act as a security guard. My boss is pushing me to my limits."
At this, Gu Chuanshan couldn’t help but laugh, "Hahaha, sounds like your boss is really broke."
Gu Fan sighed, "When I first joined and saw there was literally no one else there, I was dumbfounded. I almost turned around and left on the spot."
"Yet, you stayed. Looks like someone was feeling lucky," Gu Chuanshan, smiled knowingly. Gu Fan conceded, "That’s right. I thought if I stayed, there’s a chance I could do what I wanted. It might not be the ideal company, but it was still my dream job. I could accept that. And if it really doesn’t work out, I can always look for something else while I’m still there."
Gu Chuanshan added, "How long have you been there now? Have you achieved what you wanted or are you still looking for other opportunities?"
"Originally, I didn’t want to continue. I wanted to just disappear. I even questioned my life, wondering why I got stuck with such a job and such a boss. Later, I realized this was all part of destiny." As Gu Fan spoke these words, his gaze was fixed on Gu Chuanshan, as if trying to look through his eyes and into his deepest thoughts.
Although Gu Chuanshan tried his best to maintain composure throughout the conversation, when Gu Fan remarked about ’destiny’s arrangement’, a brief look of shock passed over his face.
Maintaining his calm, Gu Chuanshan inquired further, "What happened? What made you believe this is destiny’s arrangement?" freewёbnoνel-com
Gu Fan replied with a faint smile, "Boss Ding was out of town on a business trip and had accidentally left an important document behind. He asked me to bring it to him. On the train, I met a girl who got into a minor trouble. I helped her out of goodwill. When I reached my destination, I met the person who could potentially save my company along with Boss Ding. However, he didn’t want to get involved. Guess what, Dad? The girl I helped on the train turned out to be that man’s daughter. What a coincidence, right? Because of this, he decided to help Boss Ding, providing a large investment. The company was finally able to weather the storm."
"That’s quite a coincidence," Gu Chuanshan mused. Incidents like this weren’t unheard of so there was no need for surprise.
Gu Fan then revealed more with a significant smile, "Dad, something even more coincidental happened. That man’s family name is Lei, and his daughter is called Lei Na. I remember one of the old house’s six tenants was the Lei Family."
At this, Gu Chuanshan frowned slightly, "There are many people with the same name and surname in this world. Just because the surnames match doesn’t mean there is anything unusual."
"True. I thought the same initially, so I didn’t give it much thought. But when Boss Ding and I paid a visit to Boss Lei’s house, I noticed their house was constructed exactly like our old one." After Gu Fan finished, he looked directly at Gu Chuanshan, who then wore a look of astonishment. Even though he quickly regained his composure, it was too late. Gu Fan had already noticed his worry.
"Coincidence, coincidence, all but coincidences. All the six tenants from back then have appeared. Dad, this can no longer be explained by coincidences. Seems more like destiny’s arrangement." Gu Fan said, visibly enjoying Gu Chuanshan’s reactions.
Yet, this time, Gu Chuanshan no longer responded. He understood that Gu Fan was attempting to test him.
Seeing his father’s expression, Gu Fan drained his cup of liquor, then wiped his mouth and stood up. "Alright, Dad, it’s getting late. I should head back."
Gu Chuanshan only uttered a soft "Mm," neither responding nor asking him to stay.
As he was about to step out the door, Gu Fan turned and said with a smile, "Dad, I want to thank you. If not for you asking me to live independently in the old house, I may not have met Lin Xi. Even though I’ve encountered some problems living on my own, I’ve gained a lot too." After saying this, he pushed the door open and left.
Gu Chuanshan sat there in silence, deep in thought, for a long time. The words of Gu Fan lingering in his mind. His eyes welled up with tears gradually.
When Mei Fang returned and saw Gu Chuanshan in this state, she immediately asked, "What’s wrong? Where’s Fan?"
Gu Chuanshan instantly came back to his senses, rubbing his eyes and replied, "Fan left?"
Mei Fang asked anxiously, "What did you two talk about? Look, you’re nearly on the verge of tears."
"It seems Fan has sensed the secret of the old house. He also said he’s grateful for our decision to make him live independently in the old house. He’s met Lin Xi and made many close friends. Do you understand what he meant?" exclaimed Gu Chuanshan as he deeply sighed, looking regretful.
"He seems to be forgiving us for our arrangements," Mei Fang said, a look of despair coming over her face.
"I thought that Fan, knowing that we’ve been hiding things from him and even altered his fate, would hate us for the rest of his life. I didn’t expect..." Gu Chuanshan looked even more regretful and upset.
Mei Fang suggested, "We haven’t been very good parents. Maybe we should tell Fan about the secret of the old house now."
"Don’t worry, Fan will figure it out by himself. Because destiny will arrange it that way, I’m now more convinced in what Luo Jingrong said." After saying this, Gu Chuanshan rose from his seat, drained his glass of liquor in one gulp, then gathered all his strength, "We’ve let Fan down once already. We cannot let him down a second time. The matter over there also needs to be expedited. Tell them to find it as soon as possible."
