Chapter 219: Chapter 219: Where is the Moon?

The bus was no longer operational; the road ahead was completely blocked. Even if it had been possible to drive, Chen Ke had no intention of moving forward. The roar of the engine would only attract the bird creatures they had managed to shake off with great difficulty.

Chen Ke decided to walk out of the tunnel, and he had already developed a preliminary plan, which was to look for the place in Carefree City where Jiu Lin’s team conducted their experiments.

Now, the only hope of returning rested on Chen Ke’s ability to open doors. He needed the Spiritual Energy of a powerful monster as a consumable to open the doorway, not to the Fan Hede Kingdom, but directly back home.

This meant exposing his hiding place, but he couldn’t worry about that now; when the time came, Chen Ke could continue to spin a lie to deceive Diana, while the others didn’t matter much.

Opening doors with the Blasphemous Dagger required some ritual unknown to Chen Ke, and it also needed three daggers and three lives to open, with one person transforming into a contract demon—this was a potential risk.

Chen Ke could only use the Blasphemous Dagger as a cover, attributing the door he would open later on to the dagger, hiding his unique ability was of the utmost importance.

But the premise was that they could successfully find the Daughter of Sorrow. Without the soul of a powerful monster, everything was futile.

The last of the survivors walked in silence for a long time. A 9-kilometer distance would only take 40 minutes by car, but on foot, it would take quite some time, especially with an injured party member.

Diana’s condition made it impossible for her to walk for so long, so Chen Ke had no choice but to carry her as they moved forward. This time, Ying Baiyi took the lead, Sam brought up the rear, and Chen Ke walked in the middle of the group.

After two and a half hours, the group finally crossed the underground tunnel and arrived at the west side of Carefree City.

Far from the bustling downtown area of Carefree City, near the seaside, lay a small port town. Through the hazy horizon, Chen Ke thought he could see the silhouette of Opportunity City.

“The place where Jiu Lin conducted her secret experiments isn’t far from here; we’re almost there. The laboratory is disguised as a small factory from the outside, but it’s a whole other world inside,” Ying Baiyi found Chen Ke amongst the team.

Chen Ke had just let Diana off his back, and everyone was sitting by the roadside, resting and enjoying the sea breeze.

“Although it’s a bit late to ask now, how do you know they were conducting experiments here?” Chen Ke asked.

“Believe it or not, I’ve known Jiu Lin for many years. When this secret project just started, being a special agent in the city where the laboratory is located, I was one of the first to be informed,” Ying Baiyi said, hands on his hips.

“Oh… sounds reasonable. So, you’re in charge of security over here… or something like that?” Chen Ke asked.

“Sort of. Actually, even I shouldn’t know what exactly they are doing. The special agents working with me only received very explicit orders. But Jiu Lin told me everything,” Ying Baiyi explained.

“Sounds like… you used to have a good relationship; otherwise, she wouldn’t have told you such confidential information,” Chen Ke remarked.

“It’s all in the past, and then… it’s not the kind of relationship you’re thinking of. In any case, now we are sworn enemies,” Ying Baiyi said.

“Okay, let’s try our luck now and see if the Daughter of Sorrow is inside… Have you been in before?” Chen Ke asked.

“Of course, I’ve been in. My responsibility was to deal with any Spiritual Energy outbreaks that might occur inside. But I’ve never been to the most central experimental unit. However, that being said, it’s not very large,” Ying Baiyi shook his head.

“How long will it take us to get to that small factory from here?” Chen Ke asked.

“More than ten kilometers,” Ying Baiyi replied.

“Damn it…” Chen Ke cursed under his breath, looking down the dark blue road stretching into the distance, with the black sea merging with the sky on another side.

The lightless sea churned with black waves, as if something was brewing beneath.

“I remember you saying the factory wasn’t far from here…” Chen Ke grumbled.

“It’s not far. A drive takes less than half an hour. I used to eat lunch often in the town ahead, then drive to the factory, enjoying the sea breeze along the way, no red lights, no traffic jams, truly refreshing,” Ying Baiyi said with a smile.

“I bet by the time we walk there, it’ll be daylight,” Chen Ke said helplessly.

He took out his phone to check the time. After a night of turmoil and the two and a half hours of walking through the tunnel, it was already 5:30 a.m.

The sun was about to…

Wait a moment…

Is it 5:30 already?

Chen Ke frowned and looked around.

Everyone was sitting on the road taking a rest; two girls were sitting next to Diana, supporting her so she had something to lean on.

The other male survivors gathered together discussing something and occasionally reloading the empty magazines of the M14.

Sam was on guard at another spot, like a loyal sentinel.

And Ying Baiyi, standing by his side.

Chen Ke looked out at the pitch-black sea again; it was indistinguishably dense in the distance, and the inky blue sky was about to merge with the black sea, as if ready to swallow everything up.

“Ying Baiyi, don’t you find it strange?” Chen Ke asked.

“What’s strange?” Ying Baiyi was puzzled, but the look on Chen Ke’s face unnerved him.

“It’s 5:30 now, and it’s still this dark? Unless it’s winter…” Chen Ke said.

Upon hearing that, Ying Baiyi also realized belatedly. It was indeed too dark for 5:30 in the morning!

“What’s the situation now… What have we run into?” Ying Baiyi pondered.

“I think it’s a bit of a big problem… Look up at the sky,” Chen Ke pointed upward and said.

Ying Baiyi looked up, and in the pitch-black sky, there was nothing; gazing into it, the darkness seemed to have hands covering one’s eyes.

“The moon… the stars… they’re all gone…” Ying Baiyi gasped.

Not just the moon and stars, Chen Ke also noticed that the road stretching into the distance also seemed to have vanished into the thick darkness.

At first, he thought it was simply too dark to see clearly. Now, it appeared as if the scenery ahead had been erased.

“That small factory seems to belong to the past now, Ying Baiyi,” Chen Ke sighed.

“Yeah…” Ying Baiyi stared blankly into the darkness ahead, a surge of indescribable fear rising in his heart.

“We should move quickly. Didn’t you say there’s a town ahead?” Chen Ke patted Ying Baiyi on the shoulder and turned to walk towards Diana.

Diana looked up at the approaching Chen Ke, who impulsively picked her up and cradled her in his arms, a move so unexpected that she was at a loss. But after a few seconds, he put her back down.

“Wrong position, hurry.” Chen Ke crouched down with his back to Diana.

“What’s happened?” Diana looped her right arm around Chen Ke’s neck, letting him carry her on his back.

“I have a bad feeling; we need to keep moving forward,” Chen Ke replied.

He called out to Sam and signaled everyone to stand up and continue walking.

“We’ve only rested for a few minutes, Chen Ke, should we wait a bit longer?” Sam asked.

“The situation is urgent, we’ll talk when we get to a safe place,” Chen Ke responded gravely.

Diana didn’t know what had happened, but she too sensed the potential danger, resting her chin on Chen Ke’s left shoulder and silently looking at the road ahead.

Ying Baiyi took deep breaths and followed, the group heading towards the small town Ying Baiyi had mentioned.
