Chapter 206: Chapter 206: Remodeling
Sam only realized the elevator hadn’t moved in a long time after Chen Ke said so. He pressed the floor button, but there was no response at all.
“How come…” Sam had a bad feeling.
At that moment, the lights inside the elevator suddenly went out.
Chen Ke decisively activated his Spiritual Vision to see what was happening around them. This corridor was less than 100 meters. Within the range of his Spiritual Vision, he could see Dr. Jiu Lin’s movements.
Besides Jiu Lin, the blue outlines of the survivors in the patient rooms were also sketched out; they were still lying in their beds.
The blue outline of Jiu Lin moved from one end of the room to the other and made a motion of pulling an electrical switch, an action that made Chen Ke sense a whisper of danger.
And at the moment she pulled the switch, a series of electromagnetic sounds of access control locks being released resonated in the hallway. He knew the doors to the patient rooms had been opened.
Why would Jiu Lin open the doors to the patient rooms? Chen Ke’s focus then shifted to the patients.
Strange things began to happen. One of the patients slowly sat up, their hands covering their face as they cried, and sharp protrusions slowly emerged on their back while their limbs kept growing.
Because the environment was too quiet, the sound of the patient’s crying and the creak of muscles and bones growing could be heard even by Chen Ke and Sam in the elevator.
From the crying, it was apparent that this patient was a female. Her body convulsed due to the mutation on her back, and a set of bone-like structures resembling wings slowly took shape. Then, with a snap, the wings unfolded.

“Uh oh… huh… mmm…”
“Ah hohoho… ugh…”
“Hmm oh… woo woo…”
The sniveling slowly turned into painful moans. The limbs of the female patient had already grown beyond human norms. She tumbled out of bed with a clatter and lay on the floor, her wings spread out, flapping with a puffing sound.
At the same time, the outlines of the other patients began to change as well, transforming into monstrous beings just like the female patient.
Chen Ke took a deep breath. He was right to be wary of Dr. Jiu Lin; that woman was indeed conducting human experiments in the underground space of the hospital.
Chen Ke didn’t care why she was doing this, but he guessed that those ghostly things flying around might all be creations of the female doctor…
“What’s that noise?” Sam asked anxiously. Without Spiritual Vision, he naturally had no idea what was happening outside the elevator.
“We’re about to have company,” Chen Ke raised a finger, making a “shush” gesture.
It wasn’t wise to fight in this confined space. Chen Ke looked up at the top of the elevator and located the maintenance access hatch.
Most elevators have this sort of exit that allows one to climb out of the elevator, but to prevent it from being opened by passengers, many have an additional cover plate over the access.
Using the stock of the M14, Chen Ke pried open the cover plate and jumped up to push at the hatch, finding it a bit tight.
“I got it.” Understanding Chen Ke’s intent, Sam moved below the hatch. He was taller than Chen Ke, so he didn’t need to jump and could reach the hatch handle with one hand.
Sam pushed forcefully, and with a “bang,” the hatch was pushed open. He leaped up, grabbed the edge, and hoisted the upper part of his body out of the elevator.
Chen Ke supported his knees and shins from below, and it didn’t take long for Sam to climb out of the elevator and onto the top of it.
“Pass me the guns first,” Sam said.
Chen Ke handed up both M14s and the bag filled with medicine, then grabbed Sam’s extended hand.
Right then, the elevator doors opened.
“`
“Ah hoho… Ugh…”
Those mutated patients charged towards the elevator, flapping their newly sprouted wings in the narrow corridor. It seemed Dr. Jiu Lin hadn’t intended to let them leave so easily.
With one strong pull, Sam hoisted Chen Ke onto the top of the elevator. Chen Ke felt as though he was holding onto an automatically rising handle.
When those things burst into the elevator, Sam quickly covered it with the lid and then twisted the gate shut.
Now, Chen Ke and Sam were only separated from the creatures below by a layer of metal and could still hear their sharp claws clinging to the top of the elevator.
As he covered the lid, Chen Ke snuck a quick glance below; the mutated patients looked eerily similar to the bird-people outside, except their wings were white.
“What the hell was that!?” Sam had also seen those things and looked at Chen Ke, panic-stricken.
“I don’t know, but they look similar to the ones flying outside.” Chen Ke said as he moved to the elevator doors on the previous floor, trying to pry them open with his hands.
“What should we do now?” Sam seemed out of ideas.
“Let’s not overthink it. Let’s get out of this elevator shaft first, then see if we can find another vehicle.” Chen Ke gritted his teeth, set his face in a sternly philosophical expression, and with considerable effort, pried the elevator doors apart slightly.
“A car? You mean we’re going outside? Are you insane? All that stuff is out there!” Sam gasped in astonishment.
“Do you really want to spend the night here? Besides, you heard what the doctor said. Diana might be in danger right now.” Chen Ke said, pulling the doors further apart as he spoke.
He leaped up, sat in the doorway, used his body’s thickness to wedge the prised open elevator doors, and then pushed the doors with all his might.
“Give me a hand here, Sam!” Chen Ke glanced at Sam.
With that realization, Sam quickly joined Chen Ke in pushing the doors. The two men exerted themselves and finally managed to slide the doors open, with Chen Ke pulling Sam up to the elevator entrance.
Now they were on the underground fourth floor. Chen Ke’s Spiritual Vision could clearly see more than a dozen monsters crowding the lower elevator and the corridors, while Dr. Jiu Lin was safely ensconced in her office.
“Alright, let’s see if we can find a way up, then make our way to the parking lot,” Chen Ke whispered.
He slung the medkit over his shoulder, hoisted the M14, and checked his pockets for spare magazines—four were left. In truth, he had never fired the gun.
“Do you still have bullets, Chen Ke? I’ve run out…” Sam asked.
Chen Ke took out three magazines and passed them to Sam; with one in his gun and an extra one to carry, that was enough for him.
Sam took the magazines, replaced his near-empty two-bullet magazine with a full one, and took a deep breath. Having bullets gave him much more peace of mind.
The two didn’t speak further and started to survey this floor’s situation, unsure whether it harbored any of Dr. Jiu Lin’s transformed patients.
With Spiritual Vision, Chen Ke glanced around and saw no living persons on this floor. The hallway on both sides was lined with patient rooms, like on the fifth floor. He peeked through the window of one room and saw a corpse lying on the bed.
“Look, there’s someone…” Sam whispered to Chen Ke from another area.
“Dead,” Chen Ke responded.
Suddenly feeling an urge to go inside, he fumbled for the doorknob, but the electronically controlled lock prevented manual opening.
“Sam, see if there’s an office on this floor. We need to find a way to get this door open,” Chen Ke instructed.
“Are you sure everyone inside is dead?” Sam asked, peering at the body through the door.
“Trust me, Sam… they’re dead, but we might find some clues… Go check,” Chen Ke urged.
His gaze was drawn to something in the small room; beside the deceased’s bed, there was a notebook wrapped in brown paper.
