This Life, I Will Be the Protagonist-Chapter 587 - : Scarlett
Even though the only two attribute boosts Rick received came from Rita, he knew she must despise him. If she could, she would have made sure he was excluded from this situation entirely.
In fact, he had sensed it for a long time. After being contracted by Black Jade, Rita had the power to help him improve his life, but she turned a blind eye.
Back then, he didn't want to believe it, nor was he brave enough to face it. He still relied on Rita's influence to make life easier under Black Jade's roof.
If he had doubts before, the moment Rita started appearing on BS announcements more frequently, he became certain that she hated him. Even if she couldn't force Black Jade to break the contract with him, she could make his life much better. With her contributions to BS, she didn't even need to intervene directly. One word from her would have Eclipse Vanguard negotiating with Black Jade to release him from his servitude.
But Rita never did that. Instead, she let Eclipse Vanguard keep Samuel and Scarlett locked up as well.
It wasn't like Eclipse Vanguard could act against Rita's wishes, so there was only one explanation: Eclipse Vanguard had understood Rita's intentions and was helping her handle things.
Rick spent countless hours wondering, lost in thought as he cleaned Black Jade's scales, why Rita hated him so much. They had such a good relationship back in the day. During the second closed beta, she had helped him many times. Later, when he offended The Jones Family, it was her who stepped in to help.
He couldn't figure out when Rita started resenting him.
This question was something he asked Samuel and Scarlett too. Why were they all locked up here? It was a shared mystery among the three of them.
But Scarlett didn't care much about it. She'd rather spend time eating, drinking, and browsing on her phone.
She was always busy. Even though they were locked up here, she stayed busy. Since arriving, she had started running a social media account dedicated to Black Jade, and her followers had grown to over 50 million. Every day when Black Jade came back from work, she'd take pictures of him, edit them, and even made vlogs!
She split the earnings 50/50 with Black Jade.
At first, Black Jade didn't care much about it, but now, Scarlett had more influence than many Eclipse Vanguard players who fought alongside Black Jade in dungeons. She had become Black Jade's manager.
Scarlett seemed to enjoy herself no matter where she was. She was carefree, didn't let things bother her, and didn't overthink things. Her heart was small, only big enough for her own joy. She had no ambition and no desires.
She adapted quickly to her new environment, like a plant that would thrive no matter where it was thrown. Her happiness had a cruel innocence to it because she never cared about how others felt, nor did she bother to analyze whether people loved or hated her.
When she was sent here with Samuel and Rick, Scarlett thought it was because Eclipse Vanguard wanted to hold them as hostages to control their daughter. This conspiracy theory gained traction on the forums, and Eclipse Vanguard didn't clarify it, making more people believe it.
After Scarlett personally endorsed this theory, it silenced most of the rumors.
When Rick saw the trending news, he almost fainted from anger. He knew Scarlett wasn't stupid.
In the past, Scarlett had always been a blurry figure standing in Samuel's shadow. She was his mother, a part of the family. But did he really understand Scarlett? Perhaps not.
Now that they were living here, he started to learn more about her. He saw what kind of person she was.
He realized that Scarlett might not be the smartest person he had ever known, but she was definitely the best at playing dumb. She would make guesses, but she always chose the version of the story that made her the happiest, and she would quickly convince herself to believe it.
After Rick got the answer from Scarlett about them being used as hostages, he stopped discussing it with her and went into a silent war with her for three days.
In the end, Scarlett became upset, went to Black Jade, and Black Jade forced Rick to apologize to his mother.
Fine! He couldn't win! But he still had his dad. So he went to talk to his father.
However, Samuel didn't think that Rita was behind all of this. He was convinced that it was the Eclipse Vanguard Commander, Avery, who was behind everything.
"You don't understand the old grudges we have! She's suppressing me, afraid I'll take revenge when I rise!"
"Your sister? She's not like that. We don't have that much animosity. Even if she discovered we were skimming from her money, what's that in the grand scheme of things? She's not that petty."
Rick: "…"
Avery is afraid of your revenge?
You're fifty years old! What kind of script would you need to enact for you to take revenge on Eclipse Vanguard's second-in-command?!
Rick asked around, growing more frustrated and desperate. Eventually, he came to the conclusion that only Black Jade truly understood him, because Black Jade also thought it was Rita.
Rick was fascinated by Rita. He loved to hear Black Jade discuss Rita's old personality, analyzing their past grievances.
Black Jade: "At least it's more interesting than hearing you talk about your ex-wife. I'm here to scrub scales, not to be an emotional blogger."
For a while, Rick thought Black Jade hated Rita, but he realized that every time he brought her up, Black Jade's attitude was strange.
There was wariness, fear, defensiveness, and resentment, but no hatred.
A few times, he gathered the courage to ask Black Jade if he hated Rita for breaking his horn off with that arrow.
At first, Black Jade calmly and strangely said he couldn't beat her.
But as BS announcements mentioned Rita's name more and more, when Rick asked the same question, Black Jade's answer changed to, "I don't dare hate her."

When Rick heard this, he instantly realized how laughable his anger and doubts were. He understood Scarlett's feelings then.
What difference did it make to understand the truth? What could knowing it change? Could it alter the current situation? No.
Since it couldn't, why not be a little foolish, a little dumb?
But Scarlett never seemed to advise him to let go.
Most importantly, after she could speak on Black Jade's behalf, she never made him treat her son any better. Even when she had enough gold coins, she never bought him any equipment.
Maybe she knew that what Rita wanted was for Rick to suffer, to stay in misery and regret every day.
And as long as Rick suffered, Scarlett could have her happiness, and Rita might just turn a blind eye.
Or maybe, Scarlett never even cared if he was doing well or not.
After realizing this, Rick's pain and hatred grew deeper.
