At the Zhang family’s old mansion meanwhile, NaNa was experiencing unhappiness. First of all, she had been pushed to the back at the inauguration. Nobody knew who she was and everybody had been praising Yura and Zhang Xian, telling them how life would be kind to them since they had reunited miraculously.

Their pictures were already trending online, and everyone was talking about the return of Beijing’s it couple. Nobody from the Zhang family had even bothered to correct the narrative.

The more her husband remained quiet about it, the angrier she became.

Another thing which was annoying her was the non-stop housework which she had to personally be involved in. She thought living with rich in-laws and lacking for nothing would mean living a stress free life. Instead, she had to cook some of the meals for the elders personally, tend to the flowers in grandma Zhang’s garden, wake up at five in the morning to supervise the preparation of breakfast.

She had to massage grandma Zhang’s arms and feet because her joints ached occasionally. She had to sort the laundry of the elders, ensure that every corner of the house was clean and run errands too.

The elders were always hosting guests daily and she had to serve the guests personally.

It was exhausting, more exhausting that her previous life where the family of three lived under one small roof in a shoddy apartment and she didn’t have to walk on tenterhooks.

At the moment, she was hiding out in the bedroom and massaging her sore feet while looking at the the current pictures on Yura’s weibo. This was a thing she did constantly, stalking the woman who in her mind wanted to steal her husband.

She had shared pictures of herself at the inauguration and more pictures from what looked like a get together with her sons and other people that she had seen at the inauguration.

Seeing Yura so happy like that, living carefreely made her feel miserable. Why was she so happy when she was about to be divorced?

Why did she get to party while she was stuck here doing housework like a common maid?

The bedroom door opened and she tossed the phone on the bed in a panic and got to her feet. She was expecting to see grandma Zhang but it was Xian who came in and she sighed in relief.

Barely giving him a second to breathe or speak, she asked, "What is it now? Does your mother need me to give her a bath?"

Zhang Xian gritted his teeth and looked at her through angry eyes.

"If you are going to disrespect my parents then you should leave this house NaNa." He said sternly.

NaNa gasped and blinked rapidly. She didn’t think he could say such a thing to her because he had chosen her after all. He was willing to divorce Yura, didn’t that mean he loved her? How could he speak to her so coldly then?

"Yue..." she softened her voice and called nervously.

He tilted his head and cut her off without hearing what else she wanted to say.

"How many times must i tell you not to call me that? You know hearing that name displeases my parents because it’s a reminder of a painful time for them."

Agitated, NaNa put her right hand on her waist and raised her voice slightly to complain. "Why is it that all i hear from you lately is your parents this, that, or that? You lived as Wang Yue for over twenty years, must we act as if you didn’t just to please them?"

Zhang Xian shrugged out of his coat and tossed it on the bed. "My parents are old, they have suffered enough. I am adjusting just as you are NaNa. Us living here was your dream and goal, now that...."

"You speak as if we didn’t suffer." she blurted out.

"Was it their fault that we suffered?" he retorted.

"Maybe not, but they should be doing all they can to make us to comfortable now. Why am i being treated like a servant here Xian? Why do i have to do housework and run errands? Did they make Yura do things like this?" she shouted out angrily.

Her voice was carried out of the bedroom, and her words fell into the ears of grandma Zhang and her personal maid that were about to enter. The maid was carrying a silver tray on which one porcelain bowl of chilled pear and ginger soup was sitting.

"Open the door." she told the maid coldly.

With one hand, the maid opened the door and revealed the presence of the elderly woman. She walked in and her cane slowly, and the maid followed.

NaNa, like a chameleon changed shade immediately. Her voice softened and her attitude changed.

In a soft voice, with hurried feet, she approached and tried to hold grandma Zhang’s hand.

"Mother, we didn’t hear you knocking on the door." She laughed nervously.

The nervousness on her face couldn’t be hidden as worried that her words could have been overheard.

Grandma Zhang snubbed Nana and looked at her son instead, with gentle eyes.

"Xian, i brought your favorite pear ginger soup. Why don’t you sit down and enjoy it first before taking a bath?"

"Mother, i can help." NaNa reached for the tray eagerly but the maid wouldn’t let her get close to it.

Grandma Zhang told NaNa sarcastically, "No, please don’t help. We wouldn’t want anyone to mistake you for a maid in this house."

NaNa shrunk her eyes and looked down with a frown on her face. She could not deny the things she had just said. She didn’t want to apologize but she had to do so because she needed to be on the good side of the elders.

"Mother, you have misunderstood me...." She started to say.

Again, grandma Zhang snubbed her and turning around entirely and giving NaNa her back.

"Xian, sit down and eat your soup." she said softly.

However angry she was with the woman her son had brought home as a wife, she softened when she looked at her sun. As long as he was there, NaNa didn’t matter.

Zhang Xian sat down and gulped the pear soup down, eating the pears inside rather quickly. Then he put the bowl back on the tray and smiled at his mother.

He put his hands on her shoulders and turned her around carefully while telling her, "Mother, it has been a long day for you. You must be tired by now, you should get to bed now."

He escorted her all the way to the door leading to her bedroom, wished her goodnight and strode back to his bedroom where he was sure NaNa would begin another round of complaints. Ever since their lives changed, so had she. She was happy to accept the perks of being wealthy but not the responsibilities.

She hated being ordered around by his mother and also hated the fact that Wang Yong had been sent abroad without her prior knowledge.

She resented the fact that she had not been declared his wife publicly.

She had complained to him about the charity work his mother engaged in like washing clothes for children in orphanages or visiting and tending to the sick in different hospitals.

She kept pushing him to work in the family company even though he kept telling her that he was not ready. freewёbnoνel.com

NaNa wanted the roses, but not the thorns, which was impossible.
