The world has turned into Hell's Game, why should I stay human?!-Chapter 1258 - 777: Xia Kai: If Only I’d Known There’s Human Etiquette Even in Hell’s Game (Part 2)
But as the saying goes, you can’t judge a book by its cover. This is the Hell trial; these two gatekeeper NPCs definitely can’t be all sunshine and rainbows.
"Hey, you there, human."
Just as Xia Kai was hesitating about whether to go over, the Minotaur on the left called out to him.
"Ah, are you calling me?"
Xia Kai pointed to himself and asked.
"Yeah, I mean you. You’ve been standing there for ages. Are you coming in or not? If not, buzz off. We still have to keep an eye on you standing there."
The Minotaur grumbled.
"I’m coming, I’m coming, heading in right now."
Xia Kai hastily walked toward the two Minotaurs.
"Hello, esteemed demon elders."
He greeted them respectfully.
"Who are you calling a demon?"
The Minotaur on the left glared at him, and a fierce aura instinctively made Xia Kai take a step back.
"Demons are made, but we were born that way. Can you really compare?"
The Minotaur on the left said.
"Yes, yes, it’s my mistake. How should I address you both?"
Xia Kai hurriedly said.
"I’m called Niu Sanji, and this is my brother Niu Xiaoji."
The Minotaur on the left said.
"Hello, Uncle Sanji, hello, Uncle Xiaoji."
Xia Kai quickly corrected himself.
"Smart kid. So, tell us, what brings you here?"
Niu Sanji asked.
"I’m, I’m here to seek refuge with a relative."
Xia Kai replied cautiously.
"Seek refuge with a relative? Who might that be?"
Niu Sanji asked.
"Jing Shang, do you know him?"
"There are several people named Jing Shang on Bathhouse Street; which one do you mean?"
Niu Sanji retorted.
"I, uh, don’t know either. My dad just gave me a letter to come find him, but didn’t give me other details."
Xia Kai took out a letter from his pocket.
"I’m not reading that. Who knows if it’s real or fake?"
Niu Sanji refused to take it.
"Uh, this..."
Xia Kai was dumbfounded.
"This kid’s so naive; shall we just eat him?"
Niu Xiaoji, who hadn’t spoken all along, suddenly suggested.
His tone was casual, and though his gaze on Xia Kai lacked any hunger, it only made him feel even more nervous.
"Niu Xiaoji, are you crazy, thinking about eating people? You better watch out or Niu Daji will come back and beat the crap out of you."
Niu Sanji gave Niu Xiaoji a fierce glare.
"Why should I? Niu Daji himself once said he’d buy someone to eat once he got rich."
Niu Xiaoji grumbled defiantly.
"That was in the past. Now, just see if he dares to eat someone. Even if you stuffed a person into his mouth, he wouldn’t dare chew."
Niu Sanji replied.
"Humph, serves him right for acknowledging a human as his boss."
Niu Xiaoji muttered, his mouth curling in disdain.
"Shut your mouth, Niu Xiaoji. You might not care about your life, but I still care about mine. If you don’t stop talking, I’ll tell our mother and have Niu Si Ji take over from you, and you can just stay home."
Niu Sanji scolded.
"Why are you yelling at me? Fine, I’ll stop talking then."
Niu Xiaoji shut his mouth, sulking.
"I’ll be straightforward with you, human."
Niu Sanji looked back at Xia Kai.
"Please, go ahead."
Xia Kai pretended to listen attentively.
"It’s not impossible to get in, but, you know..."
Niu Sanji made a rubbing gesture with his fingers.
"I understand, I understand."
Xia Kai nodded knowingly.
How could he not understand?
Originally, he was just spooked by the name of the Hell trial and hadn’t considered the usual ways of the world.
But after fumbling through his pockets, he was embarrassed to find he didn’t have a single cent.
"Please don’t worry, I’ll look again."
Seeing Niu Sanji’s expression darkening, Xia Kai quickly said.
Then he discreetly retrieved a small money bag from his System Space.
"Name: Universal Small Money Bag (One-time use)"
"Type: Tool"
"Quality: Common"
"Effect: Grants a small amount of the current instance’s universal currency upon use."
"Note: Money isn’t everything, but without money, you’re toast."
"Can it be taken out of the instance: Yes"
This is a tool that Xia Kai exchanged for in the official store of Hell’s Game, and it’s also one of the most frequently exchanged items by players.
Although according to players’ statistics, the cost-effectiveness of this tool is extremely low, other items exchanged for the same points within the instance can often be traded for multiple times the currency compared to the money bag.
But players still exchange for the Universal Money Bag before entering the instance, it’s just a matter of how much.
After all, as the note on the Universal Money Bag says, money isn’t everything, but without money, you can do nothing.
With a thought, the money bag disappeared, and a few bills appeared in his pocket.
"A little token."
With a smile on his face, Xia Kai stuffed the bills into Niu Sanji’s hand.
"So much?"
Niu Sanji looked at the bills in his hand in surprise.
It originally thought that it would be good if this guy could take out a few dozen bucks, but unexpectedly he easily pulled out a few hundred.
"Did I give too much?"
Xia Kai was startled, immediately pretending to be sad.
"This is already all my possessions. If you two uncles think it’s too little, I’ll come and pay my respects once I’ve earned some money with a job."
He pretended not to understand what Niu Sanji meant.
"Really? Then..."
Niu Sanji just intended to agree, suddenly seemed to think of something, and its expression changed.
"Ahem, it seems like you’re having a hard time, never mind. Here, take it."
It took out another bill and returned it to Xia Kai.
"Leave room for maneuver in everything you do so we can meet again. If you ever get somewhere, don’t hate us brothers. This is just a rule; everyone gets the same treatment. Got it?"
It patted Xia Kai’s shoulder and spoke earnestly.
"Got it, got it. Both uncles mean well for me."
Xia Kai nodded and bowed as he spoke.
"You kid, you’ve got potential. Let me give you another piece of advice."
Niu Sanji said with appreciation.
"Please go ahead."
"Once you’re inside, don’t trust others easily. Except for the people from the House of Niu, everyone else isn’t very friendly to humans."
Niu Sanji said.
"Is it because of some grudge with humans?"
Xia Kai asked cautiously.
"No, it’s because you’re too weak and taste good."
Niu Sanji shook its head.
The cruel words made Xia Kai’s spine chill, the coldness rushing from his feet to the top of his head.
"Of course, there are indeed strong humans. If you manage to survive, work hard, and maybe one day I’ll have to consider you my boss."
Niu Sanji smiled as it spoke.
"I wouldn’t dare."
Xia Kai said hastily.
"Alright, go on in."
Niu Sanji put away its smile and said.
"Ah, Uncle Sanji, does your house need any help?" 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Xia Kai rolled his eyes and asked boldly.
It seems that this House of Niu is indeed quite friendly to humans. If he could work in their house, surviving for 24 hours shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
"Can’t you see we have to work ourselves? I have a few younger brothers who haven’t found jobs yet. Hurry up; if you don’t want to go in, then don’t."
Niu Sanji said impatiently.
"Right away, right away."
Xia Kai immediately walked into the Bird House.
After crossing the shadow on the ground, a long street appeared in front of him.
On both sides of the long street were low, antique-style buildings, with the tallest being only two or three stories.
All sorts of "people" were walking along the sides of the road, some looking completely human, others not at all.
In the middle of the street were rickshaws and sedan chairs going back and forth, with the rickshaw pullers and sedan chair carriers wearing short sleeves on top and loincloths on the bottom, small demons.
These little demons were small in stature, but they ran with an impressive momentum, each step exuding the impact of a charging bull.
Yet, their shoulders were very steady, with not even the curtains on the sedan chairs fluttering an inch.
Noticing someone watching, a few little demons turned their heads to look at Xia Kai, making him feel as though several tigers were staring at him.
Xia Kai quickly lowered his head, not daring to meet their eyes.
Fortunately, the little demons seemed too busy to bother with him; seeing him stop staring, they turned and continued carrying the sedan chairs.
"Phew~"
Xia Kai let out a long breath.
After such an encounter, he dared not observe around anymore.
But the problem was, without looking around, how would he know where to go?
"Oh, whatever, I’ll just use it."
Xia Kai sighed, extracting a brick from the system space.
"Name: Divination Brick (One-time use)"
"Type: Tool"
"Quality: Excellent"
"Effect: After use, can give the player a hint to go in a beneficial direction."
"Note: Who says a brick can’t be used for divination?"
"Can it be taken out of the instance: Yes"
"Please, show me some power."
He muttered a couple of words to the brick then tossed it into the air.
