(From Ruby’s Perspective)

When I was called to be at the Imperial Palace through a letter from the Queen, I was shocked. I wanted to shake Luc and King Demetrius for letting her go to the palace alone. I probably should not get angry at King Demetrius. His condition was not good, as Luc said. He also mentioned King Demetrius had to leave the battlefield and went somewhere safe for the time being.

I never thought this was possible until it happened.

What was Luc doing then? And what about King Ford? Why did they let Her Highness go to the palace alone where there could be spies and assassins? She did not even take Perita and Calix.

What the hell was she thinking?

I could only hope she was okay. Flint teleported us there one hour before midnight.

"What is Her Highness thinking?" Calix muttered.

"Her Highness has lost her mind completely now," Flint said. "It must be because she stayed with His Highness for far too long."

"Stop this, Flint," I said, looking around the entrance of the palace. There were knights and maids everywhere. I even saw a lot of students. They were the knights and mages in training. Calix was supposed to be there if not for his extraordinary circumstances.

Everything felt odd. Was His Highness in the palace as well? Was that why Her Highness did not bother to take her personal knights?

A maid caught sight of us. We came with so little commotion that almost no one noticed us. Besides, we were wearing cloaks and our hoods were up.

"My lady," she bowed. "Her Highness has sent me to take you and the others."

I nodded. It would be good to meet Her Highness now and hear everything from her. I could also make sure she was alright.

When we reached the second floor, I realized we were not being taken to Her Highness. "Where are you taking us?" I asked.

"I am just following Her Highness’s orders," she said.

"Are you not taking us to Her Highness?" I asked.

"No," she shook her head. "My lady will get to see her after an hour. Ah, we need to make haste. There is not much time left."

I grabbed her arm angrily. "Tell us clearly where you are taking us!"

She looked at my hand holding her arm and then looked me in the eyes. Her eyes were brown. It was like seeing my eyes. She was too young, I noticed, probably sixteen or even less.

"Her Highness ordered me. I must follow her, my lady. Now, if you let me go…"

I let her go. I followed her into a room wearily. The others were taken into different rooms. They could fend for themselves, except for Perita. Perita was to come with me and besides, she probably would not want to let me go alone anyway.

She was oddly silent all the time. After Her Highness disappeared without a word, she was not herself anymore. Her cheerful self was gone. She looked very serious and grim all the time. When she had nothing to do, she would sharpen her sword without a word, or practice by herself in the garden. The second safe place where we stayed for a few days was a small house, fit for a small commoner family.

It was located in a crowded area. We could blend in easily, just by changing into the clothes left in the house. It belonged to another family before us. Something happened to them. I heard from the villagers that they left a few months ago, in search of a job in the city. That was when another family bought it.

And that family was us. Who knows what kind of story His Highness had spread, but it worked just fine. No one suspected us and we lived quite peacefully, too peacefully I must say.

There were at least ten maids waiting. All of them were arranging what looked like a few dresses and makeup items.

I was surprised. But I could not fully express it as they started to strip me of my clothes. "What do you think you are doing?"

"Her Highness ordered us to get you ready," one of them said. Another one handed me a piece of paper. I recognized Her Highness’s handwriting right away and her seal.

Let them do their work, Ruby. I will see you in the courtroom.

I did not resist anymore. Neither did Perita. Perita was acting too abnormally. It was like she did not know what to think or do. She was a dummy, as if, being controlled by someone else.

I was bathed in a luxurious bathroom. I was bathed the same way when I was to get married. After that, I never let any maids get me ready. I did not want to get used to this kind of luxury, lest I should forget my humble origin.

Perita was taken to another room, adjoined to this one. There were two rooms in one. I knew this room. I knew every room in the palace, at least, most of them, unless there were secret passages everywhere.

I noticed the red dresses the maids were holding when I got out of the bathroom. My body felt fresh, but my mind was in chaos.

"Please choose which one you will wear, my lady."

I eyed the dresses. All of them were too luxurious. I gulped as stress took over me. When I was a child or an immature teenager, I wished to get dressed this way, with maids all around me. I wanted to own countless beautiful dresses, lots of makeup products, and more than I could ever track sets of jewelry. But now that I had a chance to have them, I did not want them anymore.

I liked how simple Luc and I lived. We had money, precisely saying, he had money. But really, none of us craved the thing called ’luxury’.

Comfort was what we craved.

At last, I chose a dress with a round neckline and flared sleeves. The dress was shimmering. It was beautiful, but probably the least beautiful among the other dresses. However, it was comfortable. That was the reason I chose it. If Her Highness had sent the dresses by choosing them herself, she knew I would choose it.

"What will happen in the courtroom?" I asked.

"… We must choose," the girl with my eyes said. "And Her Highness will give us choices."
