The Web of Knightspur-Chapter 186
Princess Macy’s eyes burned as she rubbed her eyes from time to time. She did not want to show her vulnerability, but her anger only grew and refused to settle. "Do you even want to get married to me? I do not want a marriage where I am the one holding up this relationship, when we both should be equal partners in it. If this is the situation I have to face daily, then should we stop here?"
Duke Felix’s eyes narrowed as he looked at Princess Macy. Did he even have an option to quit? No. And Duke Felix knew better. He was in no position to lose the title he was about to get after all the hard work he haf put in to be where he was now.
"I think we have a misunderstanding that needed to be cleared up." Duke Felix walked toward Princess Macy as he laid his hands on her shoulders. His eyes looked straight into hers. "You think I love Eleanor? No, I have never loved her. Maybe liked but not loved."
"You do not have to make me believe your words, I know how you look at her with a feeling of longing." Princess Macy turned her face to the side. She was not happy with the situation she was in right now. Her heart was beating faster but she wanted to make things clear today. How could she not understand a man’s gaze? She was not a fool.
"A gaze full of love?" Duke Felix’s face turned serious as his tone soured. He lightly pinched Princess Macy’s chin and turned it towards himself, making sure that she was facing him. He knew that Princess Macy loved him unconditionally and for her to say that they should put the marriage on hold or dissolve it completely, meant that he had ignored her a lot.
"Princess, are you sure it was never the gaze of a brother?" Duke Felix smiled as he leaned nearer to Princess Macy. His breaths mixed with hers, making Princess Macy breathless.
She was never this close to Duke Felix. Nor was she ever in a situation where she had a chance to have a good emotional talk with the man. But now it looked like Duke Felix was ready to express his emotions. "Gaze of a brother?"
Duke Felix could see the light shaking of Princess Macy’s gaze. He nodded his head as a smile played on his face. "You know I had always looked up to Prince Edwin as my brother. Although he was the Prince, but to me, he was my brother. And everyone in the Kingdom knows how much he loved his younger sister. Eleanor."
Duke Felix was silent for a few seconds and as soon as he saw Princess Macy nodding her head, he smiled. It was a good indication that Princess Macy was listening to him.
"For me, Princess Eleanor was the same as she was for Prince Edwin. My sister. Now that I think about it, I was never open about this. And maybe that led to the misunderstanding between us. We are childhood friends but for me we are siblings. And it pained me to see Eleanor close to Prince Edwin as she was to me."
Duke Felix smiled as he pulled Princess Macy into his arms. He had never taken the initiative to show affection. This move made Princess Macy lose her calm. She could not understand what was going on? Were her words so impactful that Duke Felix took the time to explain himself?
"I will not deny that I wrote her letters when she was at her maternal grandfather’s place, but they were never love letters. I wanted to make sure that my sister was alright. That she was keeping well after the loss of her family. I felt like it was my responsibility as Prince Edwin’s friend to take care of his sister. I am really sorry to make you misunderstand."
Duke Felix could feel the small movement of Princess Macy. She was trying to come out of the situation and handle her affairs well. Princess Macy was enjoying the sudden flow of warmth she was feeling. It made her feel powerful and wanted.
"I have misunderstood you." Princess Macy said as she wrapped her hands tightly around Duke Felix. She had really misunderstood the situation like the others. Maybe she was blinded by jealousy and held a grudge against Princess Eleanor. But now she has reached a point where she can still forgive Duke Felix, but cannot forgive Princess Eleanor.
Was it because they were sisters that they were always compared to one another and the comparison had only increased when her father ascended the throne. She was constantly compared to Princess Eleanor. Princess Macy could even read people’s faces when they appreciated her for her intelligence at times but they would always think, ’Princess Eleanor would never do this.’ The feeling was deeply rooted in her heart. Therefore, even if the misunderstanding was cleared up, the hatred still could not.
Duke Felix’s eyes curled up as he heard Princess Macy’s words. His eyes shone with greed as he knew that he had to make his stand strong in Princess Macy’s heart. "I never knew that you were so insecure. If I had known it then I might have cleared things up much sooner."
Duke Felix looked down at Princess Macy as he moved a little further, keeping Princess Macy at a hands distance. His eyes were soft as if he was coxing a small child. "I thought my heart was clear to the Princess. If I did not have feelings for you, why would I agree to the marriage? You might know that I am in a position where I can ignore people’s words and do what I want in terms of marriage. I do not need a political marriage to show my stand in society and yet I was willing to marry you. Isn’t my love clear enough to you?"
Princess Macy’s body shook. She had never thought so. She did not know what happiness was. There was a sudden feeling of breathlessness engulfing her body. What was she feeling? Was it because of Duke Felix’s words?
Princess Macy swallowed hard. She wanted to say something. Wanted to tell Duke Felix that she was really mistaken and it was her childishness that they were not able to express their true heart. Was it because Duke Felix had indirectly confessed to her? Was it because she was so shocked that she temporarily lost her ability to speak?
Princess Macy was at a loss for words. "I ... I ... But the letter? You reacted so ..." Princess Macy could not complete her sentence. She was happy that Duke Felix said such words, but she could not forget why they were in this situation, especially when she could see the letter on the table as soon as she turned her head to the side.
Duke Felix sighed as he walked towards the table as he took the letter. "I know I had been busy and was not able to pay attention but it was because I wanted to gift you something." Duke Felix walked towards Princess Macy as he opened the letter. "This is the Crown Prince Richard’s congratulations and a gift from the Roulux Empire. A small diamond mine near the borders which I had specially asked for. It’s a wedding gift from me to you,"
As soon as Duke Felix said those words, Princess Macy’s eyes shook. She could not believe her ears. She looked at the opened letter that Duke Felix held in front of her eyes as her lips curled up involuntarily. It was really the letter with the Roulux Empire’s stamp on it. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
Guilt started closing its arms around Princess Macy as she blamed herself. She had really made such a mistake all because of her jealousy. Duke Felix was happy at the letter not because he was reading something that Princess Eleanor sent, but because he finally got the gift he wanted to present to her.
Duke Felix folded the letter and he placed it in his pocket as he touched Princess Macy’s cheeks, "Never misunderstand me. The one I love is you and I can do anything to be your husband." Duke Felix smiled as he could feel Princess Macy believing his words. He leaned in closer as he placed his lips on hers as he pulled her into a deep kiss.
Princess Macy was engrossed in the kiss. She did not know how much time had passed, but when she heard the knock on the door, Princess Macy realized that she was on the couch in Duke Felix’s arms. Her face blushed red as she hurriedly got up.
Duke Felix laughed as he said, "I cannot wait for tomorrow."
Princess Macy looked at Duke Felix as she shook her head and ran out of the room embarrassed. Duke Felix’s eyes turned dark as he saw the running image of Princess Macy. He was happy that he was able to solve the problem so quickly, but he soon saw his butler coming inside, waiting for his instructions.
"Get the army ready. I want to ascend the throne a month after my marriage."
