The Web of Knightspur-Chapter 142
Princess Eleanor’s eyes turned sharp as she saw the content of the documents.
No matter how long she read, there were still things that I could not read. The pages were turned at a high speed. Princess Eleanor looked at the side from time to time as Sir Kit placed more books at the table. There were many things that she needed to look at and she knew that the time was less.
No matter how hard she tried, Princess Eleanor found it difficult. "This is confusing. It says that the Garand Duke came to the Angevin Kingdom but it was not to meet the King or the Queen. He was even there with a permission scroll from my parents. That means my parents knew he was entering."
"But then..." Princess Eleanor looked at Sir Kit with an annoyed expression, "Did the Grand Duke really betray my father’s trust?"
"And why does the Princess think so?" Sir Kit asked as he sat down on the chair opposite to the Princess. His eyes stared straight at her. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
The night was getting darker and their voices in the quiet room sounded much louder.
"Because if my parents gave him the permission then that means that they trusted the Grand Duke. But the timing is too coincidental. I just cannot accept the fact that he entered the Angevin Kingdom around the same time that my parents were attacked. Isn’t it betrayal?"
"If Princess Eleanor thinks that it is betrayal then I cannot change your perspective, but I think the Princess should see the overall view." Sir Kit said as he opened one of the books that were placed on the side of the table. "You should read them all and come to a conclusion. I think that is only fair."
Princess Eleanor was confused but she nodded her head soon. She knew that there were times when she was quick to come to a conclusion but no one had pointed it out so bluntly. Princess Eleanor was not angry at Sir kit. She just knew that what he was saying was true. If her parents gave the permission then it shows that they trusted him. And the Grand Duke had been helpful to her as well. He brought her to his mansion even though he had no reason to.
Princess Eleanor took the book as she started reading. Initially, it was hard for her to understand but soon her eyes widened as she read further. After a long time, she looked up as she bit her lips nervously.
Princess Eleanor could not tell why she was embellished. The man did not question her, but when the Princess looked into Sir Kit’s eyes she could imagine what he might be thinking about her. She had judged his master too soon.
"So the Grand Duke followed someone from the Empire to the Angevin kingdom?" Princess Eleanor asked as she blinked her eyes.
"Yes," Sir Kit did not waste any time explaining. He felt like it was important to clear something out today itself. Who knows what will happen if the seed of doubts grows? "You might know that the royal family and Duke Beaumont’s house do not see eye to eye."
Princess Eleanor nodded her head. She did not know why but there was a fight between the two brothers. The fight had gotten so bad at the time that the rumors started spreading. No one knew what was wrong. The Grand Duke’s family had already refused to claim the throne for themself and yet somehow they were targeted.
"Well, the reality is that it started a long time ago. There were times when the Royal Family used to handle the disagreement with the people on their own, but then somehow they started to use the Grand Duke’s name to silence the rebels.
The previous Duke Beaumont allowed it as the man asking the favor was his real brother. But then it did not stop there. The nobles were threatened while the situation became stiff. Everyone thought that the Beaumont house was responsible for such a thing and they went to the Royal Family for help."
Princess Eleanor blinked her eyes nervously. She knew that what Sir Kit was saying was true. There were many cases where rulers did it. It was spread all over history. "So the Royal Family must have ignored it, right? After all, they were the ones who were doing it all?"
Sir Kit smiled as if he had heard a joke, "Well, if you think logically, they have to say no, but do you know what the Royal family did? They blamed House Beaumont."
Princess Eleanor opened her eyes wide. She cannot understand what the royal family was trying to do. Maybe it made sense to them so they openly pushed the blame. "What did the previous Duke do?"
"Well, he took the blame. You can say that it was not a very wise decision and I believe it too. It was not a wise decision at all. But at the moment it was what needed to be done. After all, House Beaumont had given permission for them to use their names.
Princess Eleanor nodded her head. But something was still bothering her, "But then why would they..."
"After the incident, House Beaumont had asked the Royal family to stop using their family’s name. It was said to be a genius request in hope that the family’s name will not be tarnished in the future. But the Royal family disagreed. Maybe they were fearful of something and soon everything became clear. The Royal Family demanded that no one from the House Beaumont will have any claim to the throne."
"Isn’t it blackmail?" Princess Eleanor asked. She felt like the Royal family was playing their cards right but it was the previous Grand Duke who was naïve to be caught up in the Emperor’s schemes.
"Is it but the previous Grand Duke just wanted to live a quiet life with his family? He knew that the fight for the throne was deadly and he did not want to risk and lose his family in the battle."
