The Villainess Wants a Divorce:Beast Husbands Regret It to Tears-Chapter 14: What Is She Really After?
Evan was taken aback by her question, his eyes revealing a hint of uncertainty.
The more he thought, the more confused he became, his mind a complete muddle, unable to find an answer.
"Going out hunting at night? The beasts that roam at night are vicious and reckless, and a single mistake could cost you your life. Never mind catching prey; even returning safely is difficult. Encountering prey is all down to luck, if you’re lucky, you might spot a lone rabbit or pheasant, but if you’re not, you’ll run all night and come back empty-handed."
"Even if you’re lucky enough to encounter prey, you might not catch it. Those beasts are very alert, and at the slightest sound, they vanish without a trace. During the day, we already have to lay in ambush for quite a while to succeed; at night, with poor visibility and unfamiliar terrain, the risks are even greater. If we fail, not only will tonight’s dinner lack meat, but breakfast and lunch tomorrow will also leave us hungry."
Seraphina listened, nodding gently.
She understood that in this World of Beastfolk, meat is the most important food source.
Most females prefer meat, feeling unsatisfied with meals that lack a hint of meat.
But she herself was not picky.
Even just a handful of wild fruits or a few wild vegetables could be enjoyed with gusto.
Moreover, she knew clearly that she had a personal space in her body.
There were a few pieces of private meat she had stashed away discreetly.
Though not much, it was enough to last her a few days.
She glanced at the several towering Beast Husbands in front of her.
"Since you all say hunting at night doesn’t guarantee any catches, if I don’t bring out some meat, are you planning to hit the road hungry, tomorrow starve all day, and manage your stamina?"
With those words, the surrounding air seemed to freeze instantly.
The Beast Husbands all stood in place, stunned, eyes full of shock.
What was she up to?
Why was she willing to take out her own meat voluntarily?
What puzzled them even more was her willingness to gnaw on wild fruits herself just to save the meat for them?
This didn’t make sense.
In their past understanding, females always prioritized their own food.
Seeing them still standing motionless, none daring to reach out for the meat first.
Seraphina furrowed her brows even tighter, raising her voice somewhat.
"Don’t you understand? If you don’t eat, your stamina won’t keep up, and you won’t walk fast! I want to see my father quickly; every day’s delay means more danger! I don’t want to lag behind, so stop procrastinating! Hurry and eat the meat, replenish your strength, we still have to hurry before dusk!"
"Even if we don’t catch anything tonight, I won’t starve. I can eat fruits, I can eat wild vegetables, I won’t have any problems. But it’s different for you; you’re the main force. If you collapse, how could I, a female, possibly reach the destination alone?"
As those words fell, the creek’s edge became quiet enough to hear a pin drop.
Everyone exchanged glances, eyes full of surprise and tremors.
They finally realized that her actions weren’t an attempt to curry favor, but a genuine concern for the journey.
She feared wasting time and that her father might be in danger.
Hence, she was willing to feel a bit aggrieved to ensure they had the strength for the journey.
Wyatt leaned against a sturdy tree trunk, his deep red eyes fixed on Seraphina’s face.
But despite watching for a long time, he couldn’t detect anything unusual.
Gideon stood a little farther away, his gaze still somewhat dazed.
He subconsciously touched his stomach, the few wild fruits eaten in the morning had already been completely digested.
But even so, he still didn’t dare step forward and take the meat easily.
Not because he didn’t want to eat, but because he didn’t dare trust.
A female, who would willingly give up her own food supply for them, male folk?
This was simply unheard of in his past decades of life.
He feared it was Seraphina’s new tactic.
That once they finished eating her food, she would pull out a whip and say, "After eating my stuff, you’d get whipped with a brine-soaked lash."
This thought flashed through his mind.
Isaac sat by the wooden bucket, tail patting the water surface, eyes complicated.
He watched Seraphina standing by the bonfire, her silhouette muddled against the light, but emitting a hint of unfamiliarity.
Those eyes, once cold as frost, now bore a trace of concern.
Isaac said nothing, merely slowly moving his gaze back to the water surface.
He recalled the tears at the corner of her eyes when she was choked last night, and seeing her now willing to eat fruits for the sake of the journey, his heart trembled, an indescribable feeling surged up.
"Stop standing there; if you don’t eat, I will."
Finally, Kaelan spoke first; he grabbed a piece of dried meat, taking a bite directly.
Everyone turned their heads to look at him, eyes flashing with surprise.
Kaelan, however, paid no attention to those looks, lowered his head, biting off the tough meat fibers.
Oils slipped down the corners of his mouth, but he didn’t wipe it, just chewed fiercely, swallowing it.
Then he lifted his eyes, looking calm: "It’s quite tasty."
With him leading, the others finally stepped forward, dividing the meat.
The five gathered around the bonfire, their movements cautious.
While eating, they kept glancing at Seraphina, fearing she would suddenly turn hostile.
But she stood there, expression calm, without any reaction.
Only then did everyone relax, quietly eating.
Seraphina remained standing there, hands folded in front of her, gazing at the distant mountain forest.
The wind lifted the loose strands of hair at her temples, revealing a smooth forehead.
She didn’t smile, or urge them, nor did she utter any sarcastic remarks.
This silence instead made them feel more uneasy, but they had to admit.
At least for now, she was safe.
Seraphina saw that they finally ate, her heart felt a weight lifted.
Suddenly she remembered something, pointing to the salt jar next to Isaac: "Right, remember to sprinkle some salt on the meat when you eat. You’ll sweat while walking, lacking salt saps your strength. The salt Isaac made can come in handy."
Salt?
Replenishing salt?
Her words stunned them again.
Everyone exchanged looks, none daring to believe their ears.
The old Seraphina only used salt to torment them.
Such as dumping salt water on their wounds, causing painful shivers.
Yet now, she reminded them to sprinkle salt on the meat, claiming it would give them strength?
Isaac studied Seraphina’s serious profile for a few seconds, said nothing, silently picked up the salt jar.
Sprinkling a small pinch over the meat in Evan’s hand.
He didn’t know whether she was acting, or if there was a deeper motive behind all this.
But he understood one thing. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
These few hadn’t properly eaten a meal for too long, their bodies were already at the limit.
Thus, he acted, fingers trembled gently.
Fine white salt scattered evenly on the deep-brown meat surface.
No matter if her care was genuine, or just for the journey’s sake.
In any case, these males indeed haven’t properly been full for long.
No matter the intention, this warm moment is real.
Wyatt moved first, picked up a piece of salted meat.
His dark red eyes glanced at Seraphina.
"Eat up, finish and hurry on."
Gideon was the least picky, shoving a large piece of raw meat into his mouth directly, chewing with his cheeks puffed, looking quite satisfied.
While eating, he mumbled indistinctly: "Salt really brings the flavor!"
Oil stained the corners of his mouth, but he couldn’t help the smile tugging at his eyes.
