The Twisted Obsession-Chapter 286: Bump into
Chapter 286: Bump into
Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, with no news of Margaret. The initial urgency and fear gradually gave way to a resigned acceptance. Abby found herself teetering on the edge of her nerves, constantly checking for updates and anticipating the worst. But Remo, ever the calm and collected force in her life, reassured her at every turn.
"Margaret won’t stay hidden forever," he would say, his voice a soothing balm. "We’ve done everything we can. Now we focus on what we can control."
And so, they moved on. Abby threw herself into her work, channeling her energy into the company she had fought so hard to regain. It had been six months since she had taken control, and the transformation was nothing short of remarkable. The once-struggling business was now thriving under her leadership. Profits were up, employee morale was high, and the company’s reputation had been restored.
Tonight was a celebration of that success. The company’s annual dinner was in full swing, a grand event held in the ballroom of an upscale hotel. The room was filled with elegantly dressed guests, the soft hum of conversation blending with the clinking of glasses and the strains of live music. Abby stood beside Remo, accepting congratulations and exchanging pleasantries with various executives and board members.
"You’ve done an incredible job, Abby," one of the senior managers said, raising his glass in a toast. "The turnaround has been extraordinary."
Abby smiled, her eyes bright with pride. "Thank you. It’s been a team effort, and I’m grateful for everyone’s hard work and dedication."
Remo’s hand rested lightly on the small of her back, a constant reminder of his support. He leaned in, whispering in her ear. "You deserve this, Abby. You’ve worked so hard."
She looked up at him, her heart swelling with affection. "I couldn’t have done it without you, Remo. Your support means everything to me."
As the evening progressed, Abby felt a sense of contentment settle over her. For the first time in a long while, she allowed herself to relax and enjoy the moment. She mingled with the guests, exchanging stories and laughter. The future felt bright and full of promise.
Halfway through the night, Abby excused herself to step outside for some fresh air. The cool breeze was a welcome relief from the warmth of the ballroom. She stood on the balcony, gazing out at the city lights, reflecting on how far she had come. The fear and uncertainty that had once gripped her seemed like a distant memory.
Lost in thought, she didn’t notice the figure approaching until it was too late. A blonde woman, dressed in a stunning red gown, bumped into her, causing her to spill her wine.
"Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry!" the woman exclaimed, her voice full of genuine remorse. "I didn’t see you there."
Abby looked down at the dark stain spreading across her dress, her initial irritation giving way to amusement. "It’s alright, accidents happen."
The woman grabbed a napkin from a nearby table and began dabbing at the stain, her movements frantic. "I’m such a klutz sometimes. Here, let me help."
Abby waved her off gently. "Really, it’s fine. It’s just a dress."
The woman finally looked up, and Abby got a clear view of her face. She was strikingly beautiful, with sharp features and piercing blue eyes. There was something familiar about her, though Abby couldn’t quite place it.
"I’m Nicole," the woman said, extending her hand. "Again, I’m really sorry about the wine."
"Abby," she replied, shaking her hand. "Nice to meet you, Nicole."
Nicole smiled, though there was a hint of something in her eyes that Abby couldn’t decipher. "You’re Abigail Falcone, right? I’ve heard so much about you and your work. It’s an honor to meet you."
Abby nodded, a polite smile on her face. "Thank you. I appreciate that."
Nicole’s gaze lingered on her for a moment before she stepped back. "Well, I should let you get back to your evening. Again, I’m really sorry about your dress."
"It’s no problem," Abby said, watching as Nicole turned and walked away. There was an odd feeling in the pit of her stomach, but she shrugged it off, attributing it to the surprise of the encounter.
She rejoined Remo inside, who immediately noticed the stain. "What happened?" he asked, concern in his voice.
"A minor mishap," Abby replied with a chuckle. "A woman named Nicole accidentally bumped into me and spilled her wine. Nothing to worry about."
Remo stiffened at the mention of the name, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Nicole?"
"Yes," Abby said, noticing his reaction. "Do you know her?"
Remo’s jaw tightened. "Maybe."
Abby’s curiosity was piqued, but she trusted Remo’s instincts. "Alright. Let’s get me cleaned up."
They made their way to the restroom, where Abby did her best to clean the stain. As she worked, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off about Nicole. The way she had looked at her, the familiarity in her eyes... it nagged at her.
Later, as the event wound down and they prepared to leave, Abby glanced around the ballroom, half-expecting to see Nicole again. But she was nowhere to be found. Remo noticed her distraction and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"Is everything okay?" he asked softly.
Abby nodded slowly. "Yeah, I think so. Just... something about that woman seemed familiar, but I can’t place it."
Remo squeezed her shoulder gently. "We’ll look into it. For now, let’s get you home and get some rest. You’ve had a long night."
Abby smiled up at him, grateful for his constant support. "Sounds like a plan."
As they left the hotel and drove home, Abby’s mind kept returning to the encounter with Nicole. She knew she wouldn’t rest until she figured out why the woman seemed so familiar and what, if anything, it meant for their future. But for now, she allowed herself to focus on the positive—the success of her company, the love and support of Remo, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow.
