The Twisted Obsession-Chapter 247: Not a Threat
Chapter 247: Not a Threat
James pulled up to Otis’s sprawling estate, the afternoon sun casting a warm glow over the perfectly manicured lawns. He hadn’t seen his old friend in months, and he looked forward to catching up.
As he made his way up the steps and rang the doorbell, James felt a mix of anticipation and unease. He knew today’s visit would be more than just a social call.
The door swung open to reveal Otis, his face breaking into a broad smile. "James, my friend! It’s been too long," he exclaimed, pulling him into a bear hug.
"It’s good to see you, Otis," James replied, patting his friend’s back. "I hope I’m not intruding."
"Not at all. Come in, come in," Otis said, stepping aside to let him in. "Alex and Lily are in the living room. They were just about to go out, but I’m sure they’ll be glad to see you."
James nodded, his thoughts already drifting towards Alex. The young man had been on his mind since the night of the gala. James had witnessed Alex’s heated argument with Abby, and it had raised more questions than it answered.
As he entered the living room, he saw Lily and Alex sitting together, their hands intertwined. They looked up as he entered.
"Dad!" Lily exclaimed, getting up to hug him. "I didn’t know you were coming."
"Just a last-minute visit," James said, hugging her back before turning to Alex. "Alex, good to see you."
"James," Alex replied, his tone neutral.
James took a seat, trying to gauge Alex’s mood. "How have you been, Alex? I hope everything’s going well."
"Things are fine," Alex replied curtly, his eyes narrowing slightly.
James decided to cut to the chase. "I couldn’t help but notice the other night at the gala... you seemed to be having a rather intense conversation with Abby. Is everything alright?"
Alex stiffened, his grip on Lily’s hand tightening. "That’s really none of your business, James."
Lily looked between them, confusion evident on her face. "What are you talking about?"
"Just something I noticed," James said, trying to keep his tone light. "Abby showed up with a man I’d never seen before, and it seemed to upset you. I’m just concerned, that’s all."
Alex’s expression darkened. "You know, James, I really don’t appreciate you prying into my personal life. Especially when it involves Abby."
James raised an eyebrow. "I’m not trying to pry, Alex. But as Lily’s father, I think I have a right to be concerned."
Alex stood up abruptly, letting go of Lily’s hand. "You have a right to be concerned about your daughter, but Abby is none of your concern. And frankly, I don’t appreciate you acting like some perverted old man who doesn’t know when to stop."
The room fell silent. Lily’s eyes widened in shock. "Alex, what are you saying?"
"I’m saying that your father needs to stay out of my business," Alex replied, his voice cold. "I’m tired of him trying to ruin Abby’s life after taking everything. It’s pathetic."
James felt a flash of anger. "I’m trying to look out for my family, Alex. If something’s going on with Abby that affects us, I have a right to know."
"Nothing’s going on," Alex snapped. "And even if there were, it’s none of your business. Stay out of it, James."
Before James could respond, Otis entered the room, sensing the tension. "What’s going on here?"
"Nothing," Alex muttered. "I think it’s time for Lily and me to leave."
Lily looked torn, glancing between her father and Alex. "Dad..."
"It’s okay, Lily," James said, forcing a smile. "You go ahead. We’ll talk later."
Lily hesitated before following Alex out the door. James watched them leave, his mind racing. He needed to get to the bottom of whatever was going on with Abby, and Alex’s outburst only confirmed his suspicions.
"I’m sorry about Alex, James," Otis said, his voice heavy with sincerity. "He’s young and hot-headed. He doesn’t always handle things the right way."
James shook his head. "It’s not just about Alex, Otis. There’s something off about Abby and that man she brought to the gala. I’ve been trying to get her to sell her shares, and now she’s adamant about holding on to them. It’s unsettling." fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
Otis sighed, guiding James to the sitting area. "I understand your concerns, but you can’t let this eat at you. Abby showing up with that guy was unexpected, but maybe it’s nothing more than that."
James rubbed his temples, feeling the weight of the last few days. "But who is he? How did she even meet someone so... powerful? There was something about him that didn’t sit right with me."
Otis nodded thoughtfully. "You’re right. The whole situation is peculiar. Abby was never the type to be involved with influential people, at least not to this extent. It does seem sudden."
James looked at his friend, his expression serious. "I need to know more about who he is, Otis. If Abby’s sudden resistance and this man’s appearance are connected, it could mean trouble. I have a lot at stake here."
Otis raised a calming hand. "James, maybe you’re overthinking this. Abby has never been a threat to you before. Why would that change overnight?"
James sighed, leaning back in his chair. "That’s exactly what worries me. If she wasn’t a threat before and suddenly is, it means something significant has changed. And that man might be the reason."
Otis frowned, realizing the depth of James’s anxiety. "You really think she could be up to something?"
"I don’t know," James admitted. "But I can’t afford to ignore the possibility. Will you help me? Can you look into this man, find out who he really is and what he’s about?"
Otis leaned back, crossing his arms. "You want me to investigate him? James, you know I’m not one for snooping. The Quinns aren’t people to be trifled with."
James met his gaze steadily. "I wouldn’t ask if it weren’t important. Please, Otis. I need to know what we’re dealing with here."
Otis sighed, seeing the desperation in his friend’s eyes. "Alright, James. I’ll make some discreet inquiries, see what I can dig up. But you have to promise me you won’t let this consume you. Focus on what you can control."
James nodded, relief washing over him. "Thank you, Otis. I appreciate it more than you know."
Otis smiled faintly. "That’s what friends are for. I’ll start looking into it right away. In the meantime, try to keep things calm with Alex and Lily. They don’t need to be dragged into this mess."
James agreed, feeling a small weight lift from his shoulders. As Otis left the room to make a few calls, James sat back, deep in thought.
