The Thorne of Destiny-Chapter 78: Crossbow Formation Array
Chapter 78: Crossbow Formation Array
How confident are you in this conjecture?" Julian asked. The young man hesitated for a moment before he responded. freeweɓnovel.cѳm
"At least 60%, senior brother Julian."
"Hmm, 60% huh. Then it wouldn’t be a problem for you to prove its truth.
You are very brave, volunteering yourself for such a laborious task."
Julian remarked with a smile that wasn’t a smile.
The young man was taken back and wanted to protest, but one look from Julian and he kept his mouth shut. He was already regretting opening his mouth earlier.
However, Julian’s next words brought a little bit of hope for him.
"Don’t worry, I’m not asking you to go alone. We’ll all help you until you reach the center of the corridor."
"Alright, prepare yourselves. On my count"
Julian whispered. "Three... Two... One... Go!"
And with that, the five of them started a mad dash towards the center of the corridor, with the young man who brought the idea in the lead.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
They sprinted into the corridor. Immediately, the crossbows whirred to life, bolts launching in rapid succession.
Julian deflected one with his shield, the impact rattling his arm. Another member ducked, sliding under another as his friend flipped mid-air, twisting between two bolts that nearly took his shoulders.
Meanwhile, the young man in the front was facing the most peril. Since he was in front, the arrows concentrated most of their attacks on him.
His silver rank magic shield was already filled with cracks after taking multiple arrows. He rapidly expanded his qi, hoping to make sure it wouldn’t break on him.
Despite his ruthlessness, Julian still kept his word. As an arrow was flying towards the young man from his blind spot, he swiftly drew his sword and met it in mid-air, slashing it down before it could get to him.
Hearing the clanging sound behind him, the young man turned around, and his eyes widened when he realized what had just happened.
A strange sense of trust welled up inside him as he resolved himself to complete the task handed to him.
He charged forward with reckless abandon, separating himself even further from the group. Multiple crossbows turned towards him and started firing incessantly.
The members of his group, seeing this, swiftly launched attacks towards the crossbows.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Multiple small explosions occurred as the crossbows were destroyed by the attacks of the other group members. However, they were just too much.
The young man, feeling the threat of death, turned around and held the shield in front of himself. He rapidly channeled his qi into it in order to strengthen it.
He couldn’t do this too soon, as multiple arrows struck the shield at the same time. He was sent flying as his body couldn’t withstand the impact of multiple arrows.
Miraculously, the shield managed to hold out, albeit barely. The cracks around it were more prominent now. It looked like it would shatter if it were given a light punch.
However, this situation brought an unexpected boon for the young man. While in the air, he noticed a small square stone among the bricks that made up the path.
Usually, he would have ignored it, but what captured his attention was the fact that it was the only one of that size among all of the bricks.
What truly drew his focus was it’s location. He wasn’t sure but it seemed like it was dead center of the corridor.
His eyes sparkled after making the discovery. Because he was in a dire situation, his mind was trying to grasp at straws, and after seeing the small stone brick, it clung to it for life.
He somersaulted in midair and turned his body facing forward. Without hesitation, he launched the shield towards the small square brick.
BANG!
The shield shattered on impact, finally not being able to withstand the impact anymore.
However, it fulfilled its job.
The small brick was forced downwards into the ground as if it were a button that had just been pushed. The ground surrounding it started rumbling as the whole width of the corridor where the stone was raised above ground.
A rectangular formation came into view as the familiar patterns of formations could be seen in the newly exposed ground.
Piles of qi stones could be seen in its four corners. Clearly, they were used to power the formation.
Focusing his gaze on the center, a prism-shaped stone could be seen floating quietly above the ground.
Anyone with half a brain could tell that it was the core of the formation. Joy flashed across the face of the young man as he was relieved to find out that his gamble paid off.
However, his joy was short-lived as multiple arrows converged on his position yet again. Now, without his shield, he could only use his sword to block a few of them while dashing towards the floating prism.
Before he even reached the prism, his sword let out a whooshing sound as a large gust of air was released from it.
This was his silver rank martial skill, the wind blade. The massive gust of air barreled towards the prism. It looked like it was going to be shattered soon.
A pleased smile appeared on the young man’s face, clearly happy with his work. However, a moment later, the smile on his face froze.
Just as the wind blade was about to collide with the floating prism, it crashed into a seemingly invisible wall, dissipating into the air.
"There’s a barrier protecting it!" The young man let out a sharp scream, drawing the attention of the rest of his teammates.
He was in a dire situation now. Without the protection of his shield, it was only a matter of time before his good luck ran out.
Facing an onslaught of arrows, he was only able to block one arrow before another arrow struck him in the shoulder.
"Arghhh!"
He let out a shriek that made his teammates’ hearts skip a beat. This was the first time that one of them fell victim to one of the arrows.
Even the one armed man had been able to survive unscathed till now, though it was only a matter of time for him as he had almost expended most of his qi.
