The Strangers - Across the Silent Heartbeat-Chapter 1: The Meet
Chapter 1: The Meet
Arjun sat within the dull glow of his room; only the very faint hum of the computer was heard. His room was a kind of haven, filled with textbooks, notes on coding, and empty coffee mugs messily scattered about. The dim light flickering from his screen shed a soft, bluish hue on his face, reflecting the intensity he directed toward the code dancing across his display. For him, it was just another night, a retreat into the world of algorithms and programming to which he was well accustomed.
At 19, Arjun was essentially an introvert and content with living a life that was singularly silent, where the digital world happened to be his playground. Tonight, however, it felt that the silence weighed a little more strongly on him. He had been working through some really complex coding for hours. The contemplations filled the crevices in his mind with logic and syntax. There seemed to be something instilled between his solitude, which featured as the twin of loneliness, pressing upon him like a physical being.
He stretched his arms in order to shake off the fatigue and rubbed the eyes; they hurt. His look fell on the phone lying next to him, and he reached for it with a sigh. Maybe a break would do him good. Unlocking the phone, he scrolled down mindlessly in the app store. And it was during one of these aimless searches - through another wormhole - that he discovered an application called "Strangers." The application promised spontaneous conversations with people from all over the world, holding a short respite from his mundane routine.
Feeling curiously adventurous, Arjun went for it. He downloaded the app and opened an account, not completely convinced but with a lot of hope. This, he thought, could be the answer to break free from the cycle of loneliness that seemed to sneak into his life.
Halfway around the world, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Ayesha was facing a similar moment of realization. At eighteen, she was chirpy and commanded an attention-grabbing smile. She seemed to light up the very room she would walk into, with an energy that was nothing but contagious. Her personality would make one feel that she had enthusiasm for life that knows no limit.
But behind that cheerful facade was a weighty battle—blood cancer, which she had been keeping all to herself.
That evening, alone in her room, the burden of her sickness seemed to press on her more heavily than usual. Her own usual distractions—her music, her friends, even her family—seemed quite unable to raise the dark veil that occasionally fell across the world for her. Ayesha navigated to the "Strangers" app with the hope that someone would help her forget her troubles for a bit and bring a little sunshine into her life.
The two only matched by sheer coincidence for a chat on the app. There was a time before Arjun finally typed out a simple "Hi, I'm Arjun from India. How about you?"
It took Ayesha barely any time before she sent her quick and bubbly reply: "Hey Arjun! I'm Ayesha from Bangladesh. Good to meet you!"
The conversation started normally enough. He spoke about his studies in computer science and how he wants to write code that would make a difference. He expressed interest in programming because it was both a challenging and satisfying job for him. Enthusiastically, Ayesha replied by talking about her passions—first, her love for music and how she liked the violin. She described how the violin was an escape to peace from the hectic lifestyle.
The conversation proceeded; Arjun could not fail to notice how natural it was to talk to Ayesha. She exuded warmth in her speech and was very easy going, which relaxed him; he began to pour out more than he thought he would. They related their love and hate stories with respect to their favorite movies, books, and hobbies. Arjun shared his love of classic literature and science fiction, while Ayesha shared her love of contemporary novels and her intrigue in different cultures.
The night grew darker as their conversation took a more personal note. Arjun talked about his social anxiety and how coding now served as therapy for him. Ayesha listened to him, empathetic and soothing, reassuring him of her understanding.
She shared her experiences in return. She spoke about music, how much it meant to her, and how she could always count on it in days of study and personal life loads. She told about affectionate memories of her family, many friends, and the rich culture that Dhaka held. She never mentioned her ailment, though there was that undertone of something heavy resting on her, a challenge that resonated behind her words in the course of their conversation.
As the natural end of the chat was getting near, Ayesha said, "Hey, this has all been really nice. If you want, we could take this on to Telegram. It is a bit more convenient."
Arjun agreed to it with an odd feeling, but it was really comforting, as if they were connecting with someone across the globe. Exchanged their Telegram IDs and a lot of promises of keeping up.
That night he logged off with a smile. It was the first time he felt recharged with enthusiasm and hope all over again in ages. He lay in bed looking through the cracks on his ceiling replaying their conversation in his mind. There had definitely been something so positive about that exchange, and he felt himself actually looking forward to their future chats.
Ayesha, too, felt relief and elation. Clutching the phone to her chest, she lay back on the bed, looking up at the ceiling and smiling. She even welcomed the distraction from the conversation with Arjun. Probably for the first time in over a month, her spirit, though she carried a heavy burden, felt light; carrying the hope, however, that this new connect would bring solace and companionship to her.
They exchanged chats for days. They would start each other's day with a good morning text and from there went on to share their activities all through the day. They found many funny incidents happening in life and kept updating each other about the same. The exchanges were marked by peals of laughter, updates in each other's life, and poignant moments when they both realized how much they identified with each other. For Arjun, these exchanges became the high point of his day. Whereas Ayesha continued to battle her own demons, this slowly started to give solace and happiness to her.

Their love developed every new day. The warmth and perseverance of Ayesha intrigued Arjun, and Ayesha fell in love with the sincerity and kind-heartedness of Arjun. To each of them, the messages meant a small victory, a light in their worlds.
By the end of the episode, one could tell this was not going to be a small thing between them, but in fact, it was like the first of many steps in a very important journey that will bring them much closer and, in the end, change their lives in a way they will not ever expect.
