Chapter 42: The Dragon Heir

Vacuse stared at his father, the man he had swore to kill, and he nodded. "I will be the heir of the Vorrakyn."

His voice was solemn.

It was, after all, him achieving one of his dreams. One of his ambitions and goals.

Be the heir. Be the Dragon Lord and then spread the wings of the family. Be someone that can decide their own fate.

Take his revenge.

Be what he wasn’t in his past life—a man of power.

His voice echoed in the room, solemn and dignified, lacking in arrogance or pride. There was no joy of victory in his voice. Only acceptance. A challenge.

Those who heard him felt something they’ve never felt in a while; they felt their blood stir because a true son of the Dragon was there among them.

Even the walls seemed to breathe a sigh.

Drenvar smiled, his face flushed with both greed and envy, but even those emotions couldn’t erase the joy he was radiating. He had dedicated his life to the reviving of his family, and he finally got a chance.

He lifted his head and removed one of the two rings on his right finger. The rings were similar; they both had a small coiled Dragon atop the black metal band.

But one of the Dragons spread its wings while the other folded on itself. The first was for the Dragon Lord while the other was for the heir.

"Vacuse Vorrakyn! In my name as Drenvar Vorrakyn, the head of the Vorrakyn family, the Dragon Lord," Drenvar began.

Immediately, Vacuse moved closer to the platform and went to one knee.

His heart was beating faster than he expected.

"Before the witness of all Vorrakyn and the Dragon ancestors, I name you the heir to the Vorrakyn family and all its rights and inheritance. I name you the true son of the Vorrakyn."

Drenvar came down swiftly, and then he accepted Vacuse’s right hand while his eyes glittered before the room. "Those who think he’s not worthy should present their case now. Anything after will be considered treason against the family. Speak now!"

His voice resounded with authority.

A lot of people sucked in a sharp breath. While most wore unreadable expressions, some were visibly shaken and angry and looked towards Amon.

Amon took a deep breath, took a step forward, then he clenched his jaw and fist, looking away.

In the end, there was only silence.

Drenvar nodded in satisfaction, and then he put the ring on Vacuse’s middle finger. Immediately as he put it on, the Dragon from his own finger raised its head and bit Vacuse’s ring Dragon, which in turn raised its head and bit Vacuse on the finger, storing and accepting his blood.

The ring can’t be taken off or used until death. And when Drenvar died, the ring on Vacuse would spread its wings while the one on the Dragon Lord would fold up.

And if they died together, the throne, another artifact, would settle it.

"Stand up, Vacuse." freёnovelkiss.com

Vacuse did, and he faced the family.

"Hear me! I present to you, your heir of the Vorrakyn family and the heir to the title of Grand Duke of the Western Region. Salute your heir!"

The room rustled, and then as one, they bowed to him.

Even Amon bowed.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The Knights slammed their fists against their armor, and those with spears slammed them against the ground.

Duke Frexon gave a small bow as he felt a chill run down his spine, a chill that he couldn’t describe.

Vacuse watched them all and then allowed himself a small bow.

Drenvar’s eyes shone. "Look, boy. We were greater than this. Our vassals once filled this same hall, and our armies reached in the hundreds of thousands. The West paid tribute to us, and the Emperor was wary of us.

"Don’t you ever think, that as the Grand Duke of the Western Region, why don’t we occupy the central? Or at the very least, why stay at the very edge here?

"It was because we are Dragons, and we cast a long shadow! We don’t need to move. They all move to us. This is what you inherit!" Drenvar said. He could barely keep his own ambition from shining through.

Vacuse nodded. He knew more than anyone what the Vorrakyn once were. After all, he was one of the people that sincerely wanted the family to be great again, and he dedicated his last life to it before he was repaid with betrayal.

It was only by studying what height they once reached that they could aim to go above it.

So Vacuse nodded but said nothing.

Drenvar was fast gaining his composure. He went back to his throne. He raised his right hand into a fist. "Hear me!"

The Knights immediately slammed their weapons down, their metal fists ringing against their chests.

Drenvar waited until there was absolute silence, then continued in a cold voice. "This is my decree. A general decree. The Dragon finally has an heir, and that is Vacuse Vorrakyn. No other person must call themselves heir, and apart from me, Drenvar Vorrakyn, and Vacuse Vorrakyn, nobody is in line for the throne of the Dragon Lord!"

Everyone bowed.

As per tradition, once the heir is chosen, everyone else is stripped of their right to the throne. Unless something happens to the heir.

"And! I now say, all of you, new Soulbearers are now Vacuse’s men-at-arms!"

They bowed again.

As per tradition, all the former ’heirs’ and bastards will now serve the real heir as his direct warriors.

Drenvar looked around the room. "Let my decree be sent to every corner of the West."

The room fell into silence again.

Vacuse watched his hand where the ring stood. A symbol that he had changed his own life with his hand. A beginning.

He clasped his hands together in front of him and bowed to the Dragon Lord. "Your Honorable Grace, thank you for your generosity. If you don’t mind, I would like to address my new... personal guards."
