The Son-In-Law Of A Prestigious Household Wants A Divorce-Chapter 5: Lady of the North
Chapter 5: Lady of the North
Early in the morning.
Isaac was standing in the garden with a bag on his shoulder.
The rose garden, the pride of Helmont, hadn’t even shown its buds yet as it wasn’t the season for it.
It would be in June—the time of the Sword Dance Festival—that the roses would be in full bloom, spreading their alluring scent in all directions.
Helmont’s roses were a special kind. It’d bloom throughout the year, until the winter arrived.
It’s pretty.
In this place, where only ugly and bitter memories remained.
The rose garden was the only thing that he could consider beautiful.
In a corner of a certain flower bed.
A small purple lilac sat there, blooming early, as if trying to have a head start.
“...”
This eyesore was something that he himself had planted.
Though, he didn’t understand why Helmont’s meticulous gardeners still left it there.
I should pull it out.
Just as he approached to quickly pull it out...
A knight with a slightly larger build than him approached him.
With a youthful appearance that could be mistaken for a boy, he stood in front and saluted.
“Sir! I am Jonathan, assigned to escort Sir Isaac Helmont to the Malidean Front! It’s an honor to serve you, Sir!”
“Ugh.”
A frown involuntarily appeared as the knight’s voice rang in his ears.
The knight—Jonathan—wore a childlike, bright smile, in contrast to his heavy Helmont armor and greatsword.
His short blonde hair was cut in military-style.
Isaac offered a handshake to the innocent-looking man.
“My name is Isaac. I’ll be in your care.”
“Yes, Sir! I will! Absolutely! Protect Sir Isaac’s safety! Until the Sword Dance Festival!”
He was someone who was sent by Arandel Helmont to accompany him to the Malidean Front.
A guard, as well as someone who was sent to monitor him, just in case he died or tried to escape.
They sent someone weaker than I expected.
Arandel probably had ordered a knight to be assigned to him, and this misfit ended up being chosen because he was at the bottom of the pecking order.
After all, Isaac couldn’t even wield a sword. There was no need for them to send an exceptional knight in the first place.
“Then let’s—“
“Ah! Isaac!”
Just as they were about to depart, someone interrupted.
Wondering what it was this time, Isaac turned to see the eldest son, Lohengrin, running over with a gentle smile.
Red energy swirled around his entire body as his long red hair fluttered.
His appearance suggested that he had been training until just now.
The eldest son, Lohengrin.
To put it simply, this man had a personality disorder.
He was a madman with extreme mood swings. A man who had beaten Isaac multiple times just to vent his frustrations.

For the first time in Isaac’s life living here, this person was smiling at him.
“I heard you’re leaving? How could this happen? Why are you getting a divorce? Are all the years and memories we shared together nothing to you?”
This crazy bastard.
How can he spout such nonsense with that kind of smile?
The only memories we shared together are him beating me under the pretense of sparring, or him forcing me to fight with him because he’s in a bad mood.
Lohengrin smiled, whispering secretly to him.
“That bitch was the one who asked for a divorce, right? She’s aiming to become a successor! Or else, there’s no way she’d go for a divorce right after Father told her she could have children!”
“...”
The eldest son and eldest daughter.
Though the former was a year older, this conversation revealed why Arandel had been torn to pick one between the two.
“If she has a child, she can’t become the family head! That’s why she tried to get a divorce! If she’s divorced, she won’t get pregnant, and she’d still have the chance to become the family head!”
“Ah, yes.”
Lohengrin grinned, as if he had discovered something amazing.
“So, don’t you want revenge, Isaac? Don’t you crave for that sweet revenge on the bitch who abandoned you just to become the family head?!”
“...”
“Here, you can get stronger with this.”
Then he secretly handed something to Isaac.
“This is?”
“You know what this is, right? It’s the Roselixir! Helmont’s secret potion that only the direct bloodline has the right to consume!”
He whispered with a sly smile.
“I can give this to you because I’m the eldest son. Drink this, survive, become stronger and come back. I believe in you, Brother.”
He winked before going back to his training.
Brother my ass.
In this life, just a few days ago, that man had forcibly made Isaac hold a sword and beat him up, saying his swordsmanship wasn’t improving.
It was pitiful to see him trying to backstab Rianna just because he wanted to become the family head so badly.
“Um, Sir Isaac?”
“Pretend you didn’t see that.”
Jonathan nervously glanced around.
Isaac sighed and opened the lid of the Roselixir that Lohengrin had given him.
Roselixir had a distinctive scent, but this one’s scent was faint.
“Tch.”
This isn’t a Roselixir.
Look at how diluted it is. It’s even more diluted among the most diluted ones.
He’s probably trying to accuse Riana of giving me the family’s potion.
This petty act just made Isaac let out a disappointed sigh.
The moment he left, the madman probably would use the discrepancy between the Roselixir ledger and the actual amount to pressure Rianna.
So sloppy.
Did he really think Rianna would be fazed by that petty trick?
Isaac turned his head slightly.
Towards the mansion where Rianna was. She hadn’t come out.
Seeing how drunk she was last night, she’s probably still asleep.
[Take care.]
He remembered that extremely pitiful farewell that she uttered.
“Let’s go, Jonathan.”
No longer wanted to linger in this mansion...
Isaac headed for the frontline, together with Jonathan.
* * *[The Grandmaster told you multiple times, no? If your leg was intact, you’d surely have become a great swordsman!]
It was a vivid memory.
A woman, her hair long and white, spoke to me with a smile.
‘Those are just empty words of comfort.’
As I let out a bitter smile, the woman replied in earnest.
[The Grandmaster? Giving empty words of comfort? Ha! Anyway, I also think the same! If your leg was fine, if you hadn’t become the son-in-law of that damn Helmont...!]
‘Don’t get so worked up. You really need to fix that habit.’
[Those muscle-brained idiots of Helmont. How could they not recognize your talent?!]
‘Listen to me...’
[Ink Sword Isaac! The man who wields a sword through his writing and knowledge. You know how much help your manuals have been to all of us! Thanks to you, my spear has advanced several levels!]
‘I get it, I get it. How many times are you going to repeat that?’
[Isaac, I’m serious.]
[I really am...]
[Grateful to you.]
[I regret meeting you so late.]
‘Are you drunk?’
[Maybe it’s because the final battle with the Transcendent Race is right around the corner. We...probably won’t return alive, will we?]
‘...’
[If I had met you earlier, our family wouldn’t have been wiped out so miserably.]
‘You’re overestimating me.’
[No, I’m not.]
I let out a bitter smile.
[It’s late, Isaac. Go to sleep.]
‘Alright. You too, don’t push yourself, Cardias.’
[...Hey.]
‘Hm?’
[Silverna.]
‘...’
[That’s the name I abandoned before I took the name of my family.]
[Silverna Cardias.]
[That’s my real name, Isaac.]
* * *“Sir Isaac!”
“Hmm?”
I slowly opened my eyes at Jonathan’s call.
Several days had passed.
After being in the carriage for so long, various parts of my body ached.
Still, being young again felt good.
I stretched out my right foot—I still found it hard to believe that I could move it—while listening to Jonathan’s shout.
“We’re almost there! They said it was the frontline, but we got here so quickly! Is it because the road is well-paved?”
“Hoaahm... Yeah, seems like it.”
White breath accompanied my yawn.
Even with a blanket, the cold seeping into the carriage permeated various parts of my body.
This was the northern part of the kingdom.
The great Malidean Wall built to stop the overflowing demonic beasts.
And guarding it was...
“From now on it’s the enemy’s territory, so we need to be careful!”
“What enemy territory? We’re both nobles of the same kingdom.”
After camping with Jonathan for a few days, I’ve come to realize.
To put it nicely, he was an innocent man.
To put it badly, he was an idiot.
Apparently, he was a target of bullying by his peers.
He said that they controlled his sleep, food, outing, and even bathroom—all under the guise of training.
Apparently, he even soiled his pants once because of it.
“Sir Isaac! This is Cardias’ territory, isn’t it?! Helmont’s rival! Helmont of the Greatsword, Cardias of the Spear!”
He spoke such words grandly, as if reciting some heroic tale. In truth, it was just a petty battle of pride between the two nobles.
Although, it was true that Helmont and Cardias didn’t get along.
This was part of the reason why Rianna was so worried.
Because it was likely they’d treat us harshly when they heard that we were Helmont.
“What if they hit us? I often got blanket-rolled at night, but here they might actually beat us up, after that. Right?”
“It’ll be fine. Both of us have plenty of experience of getting hit anyway.”
“You too, Sir Isaac?!”
“Have you not seen me helping with Helmont’s direct lines’ training?”
They called it training, but they were just beating me up.
This should be something that all knights of Helmont knew.
“Ah, I’m not allowed to participate in training. I’ve only been a Helmont knight for a year.”
“Then what do you do?”
“Recently, they told me that a knight should know how to communicate with horses, so I’ve been training to imitate horse sounds!”
“Are you an idi— A-Ahem, Jonathan? I’m saying this for your well-being, but you should just quit. At least, become a knight somewhere other than Helmont.”
“But my heart is made of roses!”
“If that’s really the case, you’d have died long ago.”
I sighed as I looked up at the approaching Malidean Wall.
Even in my previous life, I had never come here, but it was just as I heard in stories.
I can understand why the Northerners revere the Malidean Wall now.
Its grandeur truly fit its status as humanity’s protector.
The traces of time left here and there were like medals, showing how long this wall had stood to protect our land.
That was why when the Malidean Wall fell in my previous life...
The kingdom slowly began to fall.
If Helmont’s greatswords hadn’t marched to the front, the capital would’ve quickly fallen.
As we approached the wall...
“I thought I smelled a nasty scent that a brat who wets himself would like, and I was right. This nasty, sickening sweet scent!”
A woman’s booming voice echoed through the sky.
Simultaneously, a mocking laughter could be heard from atop the wall.
“For such a delicate flower scent to be smelled in the North! It’s sickening! To the point that I almost puked out the bear meat that I ate today!”
“S-S-Sir Isaac?”
“Stop the carriage, Jonathan.”
“Yes, Sir!”
Jonathan stopped the carriage, as it screeched.
Seeing me coming out, the woman who had been looking down from the wall frowned.
“Ha! I am the spear and the shield of the Malidean Wall!”
We hadn’t said anything, yet she went ahead and introduced herself.
“I am Silverna Cardias! You over there! Identify yourself!”
Seeing this display, I couldn’t help but laugh.
So she hasn’t abandoned her name yet around this time, huh?
Alright, Silverna.
Just as you wished.
I came here to meet you earlier.
“You! I asked you to identify yourself, you little punk!”
“...”
