Chapter 155 - 155: Nice to Meet You. I’m the King of Horizon

Arm in arm, Kate Williams and John Lopez arrived at the appointed place—a chic, high-end café nestled in an upscale corner of New York.

The moment they stepped inside, John's memory flickered.

This place again...

He had been here once before—on a blind date with Shelly Lee, the international artist. The place hadn't changed. Its soft ambient lighting, faint jazz music, and vintage wood furnishings made it the perfect location for young couples looking to cultivate a romantic mood.

It was classy, but not overwhelming. Trendy, yet intimate.

So this is where Bob chose to meet? John thought, his eyes narrowing slightly. Definitely not a casual choice.

This confirmed Bob Redman's intentions. He wasn't here just to catch up. He wanted something—and John already had a pretty good idea of what that was.

But before they could head toward their table, John spotted someone sitting by the window, wearing a white sun hat and oversized sunglasses.

Slender figure. Elegant posture. Gorgeous legs.

She lowered her head and pulled the brim of her hat further down when they entered.

Alice.

You're not fooling anyone, John smirked inwardly. Trying to spy while pretending to be a tourist? Should've worn a fake mustache too.

Kate spotted her too, but didn't say anything. She'd ask later. Right now, her focus was on the tall figure who'd stood up and waved at them from across the café.

"Kate! Over here!" Bob Redman called cheerfully.

As they approached, John gave him a quick once-over.

Bob was indeed handsome—tall with clean features, a confident smile, and the aura of someone who had never lacked admirers. His expensive watch, well-fitted blazer, and effortless charm screamed polished and practiced.

So this is the guy who messed with Kate back in college, John thought.

But what caught John's eye wasn't Bob himself—it was the man sitting across from him.

A middle-aged man, broad-shouldered and imposing, quietly stood up without a word and began walking out.

As he brushed past, John felt it.

An almost imperceptible pulse of inner force radiated from the man's body.

Martial artist...

No—cultivator.

Bob brought a bodyguard to a coffee date? Interesting.

John's expression remained relaxed, but he mentally made a note.

Bob might look like a charmer, but he came prepared for more than small talk.

They reached the table. Bob gestured to the seats across from him. "Have a seat, Kate. And who's this?"

His voice was friendly, but there was a subtle edge to it. A probing undertone.

Kate smiled, leaning her head on John's shoulder in a way that felt casual, but spoke volumes.

"This is my boyfriend," she said sweetly.

There was a brief pause.

A flicker of surprise—and something darker—flashed in Bob's eyes. It vanished quickly behind a composed smile, but John had already caught it.

"Boyfriend?" Bob echoed, glancing at John. "Funny. Penny told me you weren't seeing anyone."

"Things changed recently," Kate replied smoothly. "We made it official just a few days ago."

Bob gave a slow nod, eyes flicking between the two of them. "Really..."

Then he looked at John, sizing him up. "Kate was always the most beautiful girl in school. I still remember that winter... Everyone in the boys' dorm used to say, 'It's cold. My hands are cold, my heart is cold. But when I think of Kate, I feel warm.'"

Kate cut in, her tone sharp. "What's your point?"

Bob laughed, as if her reaction was expected. "Nothing. Just reminiscing. I want your boyfriend to know how lucky he is."

Kate rolled her eyes.

This guy's worse than I remembered.

Then Bob turned fully to John, smile still plastered on.

"Only an exceptional man could win her heart," he said, voice slightly louder now. "So, what do you do for a living?"

The trap was set.

Kate instinctively tightened her grip on John's arm and glanced at him.

She had told him multiple times on the way here: Think of a believable identity. Make it sound impressive. Don't let Bob outshine you.

John smiled brightly and said, "Nice to meet you. I'm the King of Horizon."

A beat.

A choking sound came from the front of the café.

Across the room, Alice—still pretending to be just another customer—had been sipping her coffee when she heard John's line.

PFFFT!

She sprayed the coffee in a glorious arc, earning alarmed glances from nearby tables.

A waiter rushed over. "Miss, are you alright?"

"I'm... I'm fine..." Alice coughed, trying to suppress her laughter. "Something just went down the wrong pipe..."

She lowered her sunglasses just enough to peer at John, shaking her head in disbelief.

You really went and said it, didn't you, you lunatic?

Back at the table, both Kate and Bob were frozen in time.

Neither moved. Neither blinked. Their expressions were blank, like they were trying to determine whether they'd misheard or whether John had just declared himself clinically insane.

Bob stared at him.

Kate, on the other hand, leaned in and hissed, "Are you crazy?!"

John looked at her innocently. "Didn't you say to impress him with my identity? Isn't 'King of Horizon' impressive enough? Look at him. He's stunned."

"You idiot!" she whispered fiercely. "I told you to make up something believable, not say something that'll make him think you're delusional!"

"And yet, here we are. He hasn't said a word."

"You're impossible."

Kate pinched his arm so hard it would've made most people wince.

John didn't even blink.

He just smiled like a happy fool, radiating peace.

Bob finally blinked. "Wait... You're serious? The King of Horizon?"

John nodded.

Bob let out a sharp laugh. "So you're trying to piss me off by hiring an actor with a screw loose?"

The temperature at the table dropped.

Kate tensed beside John.

Damn it. He's seen through us...

She started to fumble. "That's—That's not true—Don't be ridiculous—"

"You're still the same, Kate," Bob interrupted, shaking his head in mock sympathy. "The moment you lie, you stutter."

Kate flushed.

That condescending tone. That smug smirk. It brought back everything she hated about him.

Before she could think, her frustration boiled over.

"He's not fake!" she snapped.

Then, without warning, she grabbed John's collar, pulled him toward her, and kissed him—right on the lips.

Bob's eyes widened.

John's froze in surprise for a second, then calmly closed his eyes and kissed her back.

Across the room, Alice slowly applauded.
