The Secret Obsession of the CEO-Chapter 256: The Delay
Rory thought about it. If she walked out, they would say that she agreed with their statements and write that she refused to comment at the bottom of the article in the smallest font possible.
This is an accusation. She didn’t think that she should let it go.
The reporter didn’t look older than her. But she looked a lot different. In her eyes was a fire. Rory could see that she was ambitious, and she desperately wanted a good story to establish herself in the field.
She appreciated the ambitious woman, but she is not going to let her build herself by pulling her family down.
"What are you insinuating, miss..." she tried to read her name in the tag, but she couldn’t pronounce that Scandinavian surname. So, she didn’t bother to try.
"Your accusation is pretty libelous, miss. You mention those people as elites. Weren’t they the ones the accused was associated with? If they have the power to influence the justice system, why didn’t they help the accused? Is it because he was not innocent?" she asked.
The reporter got a little nervous the moment Rory mentioned the word "libel". But rather than backing off, she turned defensive.
"Asking questions is not libelous, ma’am. You are pushing for the death penalty. Everyone has a right to live," she cleared her throat. "You are the granddaughter of~"
"And you said the trial sped up just today? Are you following this trial like everyone else?" Rory ignored her next question and stayed on topic.
"How can you say the trial is hurried when there are victims from two decades ago? The investigations were happening for decades. He confessed to killing my husband’s mother. I was there when my husband struggled to deal with his mother’s death. That was over a decade ago..."
Rory glared at her to stop the reporter from interjecting her. The reporter took a step back just with Rory’s glare. She can be terrifying when it is needed.
"The accused confessed to killing women after making them go through unimaginable torture. How do you even say that the trial was hurried? Have some empathy for the family of the victims, miss. We all want justice to be served. Now, if you please excuse me..."
Rory walked past her.
"There are a lot of humanitarians fighting for the abolishment of the death penalty for the sake of people they don’t know...for them to have a second chance at redemption. But you are pushing for the death penalty when he’s your husband’s father and your daughter’s grandfather. How can you wish death on a member of the family? Just because his name is changed doesn’t change the blood ties, right? Have you no compassion for him?" the reporter asked.
Rory lost all patience. Does this woman even know the whole story? Is she truly pitying that being?
"Redemption, you say?"
Rory turned to hear the familiar voice from behind her. Mrs. Brown, mother of Laura Brown. Rory saw that her eyes were red and walked to her to console her.
"Compassion, you say?" Mrs. Brown’s voice shook. "Where is the compassion for my daughter who was taken well before her time? Did he show her compassion? And I want to see the same compassion he showed her be shown to him. It’s justice, miss..."
The reporter looked stunned as there was another person on Rory’s side. She silently backed off.
"Come on, Mrs. Brown... let’s go..." Rory held her shoulders and lead her out of the restroom.
"How can they harass like this?" Mrs. Brown wiped her cheeks. Rory got a tissue from her purse and offered her.
"I want to see him suffer as he dies, dear. It won’t be close to what my girl went through. But still... Am I cruel to think that way?" Mrs. Brown asked Rory and she shook her head.
"I think the same too, Mrs. Brown. Please don’t cry... Don’t mind them..."
Rory stayed with Mrs. Brown for some time. Mrs. Brown opted to stay in the building. Liam came to her with the key to a hotel room nearby.
She was amazed by how fast Liam worked.
"Love you, Fizzy," she pecked his lips before she was escorted out of the courtroom to the hotel.
She thought that she wouldn’t be able to fall asleep, but she only remembered changing into comfortable clothes and lying on the bed.
She was out the next moment.
When she woke up, it was already dark outside. She saw Liam sitting beside her on the bed. Turning on the bedside lamp, she sat up. Liam helped her up and rubbed her back.
"Isn’t it late? They still haven’t reached a decision?" she asked.
Liam shook his head. "I don’t know why they are taking this long..." Liam sighed. "no one knows what’s happening with the juries. There are only speculations around."
Rory rubbed her forehead. "It’s not good, is it?" she bit her lips.
Liam looked at her and without saying anything, he picked the menu card. "What do you feel like eating for dinner?" he asked.
"We are staying here for the night?" she asked.
Liam nodded. "Ellie is already asleep. I checked," he said. "And it’s already midnight. It would be an unnecessary travel to and fro," Liam said.
"Midnight?" Rory checked the time only then. "Did you eat?" she asked. She couldn’t believe that she slept that deeply for this long.
Liam shook his head. "I waited for you," he leaned and kissed her forehead.
"Why did you wait for me? You could have at least woken me up," she grumbled and got the menu card.
She picked a couple of dishes that were his favorites.
"That’s it? No ice cream or desserts?" he asked.
Rory ordered a couple for them both. Liam asked for room services and Rory waited for the food to arrive leaning on his shoulder.
He was working on his laptop answering his emails.
"You know, don’t you?" she asked.
She had a feeling that he knows that she was pregnant. He acts pretty gently to her these days but today he’s been extra gentle.
And he asked her what she "feels" like eating. He even asked if she wanted ice cream. He doesn’t usually ask her this way. She thought that he might be implying her cravings.
Liam paused writing one more of his two-word emails. It seemed like he restricts all business interactions to emails. Even those that could be handled with texts.
Rory furrowed her brows and looked keenly at his face to observe his expression. He looked pretty indifferent.
That made her wonder if she is thinking too much. She returned to leaning on his shoulder.
Liam smirked looking at her head.
