The Secret Obsession of the CEO-Chapter 255: Shifting Gears
Even the closing arguments made by the defense team were not very convincing. The lead attorney who was expected to deliver the closing arguments left mid-trial because he had chest pain.
Everything was dramatic.
Lennon knew he was screwed the moment the judge read his name as William Caroll and when the lead attorney walked out, he knew his fate was sealed.
Rory shivered at the glare of Lennon as the lead attorney was taken out. She sensed everyone’s gaze on her as Lennon glared at her.
Liam held her hand and covered her from the glare of everyone else.
The final arguments were given by another attorney and although he was not a bad lawyer, his arguments were. They were lousy at best and made one believe if the defense team was trying or not. They didn’t even bring up Liam’s name as their entire argument in the earlier trials was that Liam was the culprit.
Well, maybe the slightly embarrassing moment when Liam was asked to tie a fairly complex knot that was used by the killer, he sucked so badly that even the jury laughed. Everyone knew that Liam was not pretending to not be able to make the knot because they could see how hard he tried to make the knot.
Maybe that was the reason the defense decided not to bring up Liam.
The defense just mentioned that there is no concrete evidence against Lennon. They stated that all the evidence are circumstantial. The biggest evidence against Lennon was his office room where he made a shrine for all his victims. They argued that anyone could have made it in Lennon’s house which he no longer used.
But there were already many witnesses who testified on record that Lennon was still using the house himself. And the records of the flights he took in secret when he was supposedly in LA, and the enormous amount of evidence found in the cave in the woods which only Lennon had access to. The footprints were crosschecked, and the expert said that it could be Lennon’s as he used different size shoes just to throw everyone off.
They did find a set of boots in Lennon’s secret office. They couldn’t find much from the boots but they were not his size. They were Derick’s and even the model was Derick’s preferred one. Lennon’s lawyers argued that it was placed there. But they couldn’t provide any proof for their claim.
But the defense team didn’t bring up any of the claims they brought up before. They just pleaded that Lennon should have mercy because he’s a father.
But no one attended the court on his side. Sidney was in a rehabilitation center and Skyla was with her grandparents.
The prosecution reminded the jury of all the evidence against him. They also reminded that Lennon confessed first before changing his statements. Although there wasn’t concrete proof, there was a ginormous amount of evidence against him.
The abuse faced by Sidney was undeniable as there were medical reports. And the experts who talked to Lennon all gave reports that he was a sadistic psychopath who had violent and manipulative tendencies.
The prosecution reminded the torture the women who died went through.
And there were the testimonies of Liam and Rory. That answered a lot of questions.
With all the evidence presented in front of the jury, the jury went for deliberation. This trial was considered long as it was postponed a lot and had many twists and turns along the way. They expected the jury to deliberate for a long time, even days.
Since no one could say how long it would take the jury to reach a unanimous decision, Liam asked Rory if she wanted to go home.
Liam’s family came to LA for the trial, but Frank didn’t want to see Lennon in court before the sentencing. Frank and Claire were babysitting Ellie. So, Rory was not worried about Ellie.
But she didn’t want to stay there.
Rory went to the restroom to make a call to Claire to check on Ellie. Liam told Frank the truth about his mother’s death. Frank said nothing. Liam told her that to watch a strong man like Frank in silence searching for ways to react was so hard. But Frank might have dealt with it in his own way, when they met him, he looked normal like he always does.
Claire told her that Frank went out for a walk but returned immediately as there were reporters waiting for them at the parking lot. She couldn’t believe how they lived there for as long as they did.
She also told her that Ellie had her snacks and was currently looking after her "aunt". Ellie was impressed by the little baby and that was another reason Rory was not very against the idea of having another child.
And it already happened. It’s not like she can change anything now. She just has to break the news to Liam. That guy would be happy beyond belief.
She decided to break the news to him after the judgment. If it was good judgment, then they could celebrate more with the announcement of a new addition to the family. If it was not something they expected, then they can cope with the happy news.
Rory decided to stay in a hotel nearby and maybe return to the court after the jury reached their decision. She was feeling a little light-headed which may be part of her morning sickness. Or it was just stress.
She wanted Lennon to be given capital punishment. His name should be remembered as a psychopathic killer for all eternity.
Naturally, it stressed her as she waited for the jury’s decision. She wanted to be out of this stressful environment and rest.
As she was washing her face, another woman entered the restroom. She was wearing a lanyard with a "press" ID. Rory knew it won’t do her any good staying there and she walked out of the restroom.
She had grown to hate the reporters although she knew it was their job to ask questions.
"Mrs. Roberts," the woman called Rory.
Out of politeness, Rory stopped. She might have called her to ask for help.
"Doesn’t it seem anti-climatic now that everything had sped up this much?" the woman asked.
Rory shook her head and walked out. She should have known better.
"Yesterday, you attended a party with elites and today, the entire trial shifted gears. What do you think about that?" the reporter asked.
Rory wanted to walk away not answering her. But she wondered if it would be right to leave it just like it.
