The Scheming Ex-Husband's Courtship-Chapter 648 - 561 Thorough Investigation
In the blink of an eye, Jian Si had already been working in the law firm for half a month, had become thoroughly familiar with the various processes, and had read many legal books. Although she hadn’t received specialized education, what could enable a deeper understanding and insight than studying while practicing? Moreover, she had a stern mentor; although he was cold-faced, he was not stingy with his guidance.
To put it in one way, Jian Si was experiencing pain and pleasure simultaneously.
Every weekend, Qian Wei would reliably ask her out for meals, but every time Jian Si had plans to go out, she would be called back to the firm by Nan Zhan’s urgent calls, and the tasks he arranged for her were always trivial.
While this angered her, it also baffled her; she couldn’t help but feel as if he were watching her. Otherwise, how could it be such a coincidence that he called each time she had something to do?
Yet, Jian Si felt that someone like Nan Zhan would disdain to do something like surveillance; besides, there was no reason for it. Was it possible for him to install cameras in her home and listening devices on her phone?
These thoughts distracted Jian Si while she was reading, as Zhengzheng casually floated by her.
Could it be Zhengzheng? Jian Si’s gaze followed him, but she soon shook her head. It was impossible. Zhengzheng only went to the small square to exercise during his time off; he didn’t go out at other times and didn’t have a phone, so how could he contact Nan Zhan to snitch on her?
As time passed, Jian Si stopped worrying about these things. To her, work was the most important thing now.
When news came that she could visit Jian Hedong, Jian Si was enjoying a weekend without the pressure from her superiors.
"Sisi, I’m downstairs at your place. The detention center has agreed to a visit with Jian Hedong," said Nan Yu over the phone, prompting Jian Si to quickly close her book, gather a few things, and head out with Zhengzheng.
Jian Si knew that Jian Hedong was a repeat offender and that the visitation opportunity must have come through a lot of effort from Nan Yu.
"Thank you, Nan Yu," Jian Si said, looking at him with gratitude.
"You don’t need to thank me; although I’ve been pulling strings, my efforts weren’t enough. I think it was my brother who helped behind the scenes." Nan Yu was only speculating since he was puzzled for quite a while when notified; after thinking over all the possible people, Nan Zhan was the prime suspect.
If it had been Jian Chuan, he could have gone to inform his sister himself instead of having it relayed through him.
"Nan Zhan?" Jian Si reacted the same way as Nan Yu, but soon calmed down. "Thank you both."
In the detention center, Jian Si could only meet with Jian Hedong through a thick glass.
The wait was agonizing, and her emotions were complex.
Compared to Jian Si’s unrest, Zhengzheng, holding her hand, gently caressed the middle of her hand with his small fingers, small yet warm, giving her strength.
After another wait, the door inside opened,
His hair was all shaved off, he wore a loose prisoner’s uniform, and his demeanor seemed to have aged considerably.
Perhaps the leg shackles were too heavy; his steps were labored, making him appear slightly hunched, like a wizened old man.
Upon seeing Jian Si and Zhengzheng, tears welled up in his eyes, and his lips trembled incessantly.
Once seated, Jian Hedong picked up the handset to speak, and on the other side, Jian Si and Zhengzheng couldn’t help but burst into tears.
"Uncle, are you okay?" Jian Si choked up, her intended torrent of words reduced to the most insubstantial sentence.
With teary eyes, Jian Hedong said, "I’m fine."
Jian Hedong wasn’t lying; although a severe offender, he hadn’t faced much bias, obviously because someone had put in a good word for him beforehand.
Of course, Jian Si didn’t know this.
"Sisi, you must take good care of Zhengzheng." Jian Hedong looked at Zhengzheng tenderly and kindly, "Zhengzheng is a good child, smart and sensible; with proper nurturing, he will surely make a great person someday. Unfortunately, I won’t be around to see that day come. I will soon go to meet your uncle and aunt; I’ll apologize to them there, for failing to protect his company and take good care of you two. I’m sorry to them."
"Don’t say that, Uncle, you’ve done very well. If it weren’t for you, Zhengzheng and I wouldn’t be where we are today. I will hire a lawyer for you, the best lawyer in Aus City."
Jian Hedong waved his hand: "I appreciate your sentiment, but it’s really not necessary. Murder demands life; this is the retribution I deserve. I only hope that you and Chuan won’t hate me. Alas, it’s inevitable, isn’t it? She was your good friend, Chuan’s beloved woman. Please convey my apologies to her parents. I will pay with my life."
A nearby police officer glanced at his watch and urged, "There are two minutes left. If you have something to say, say it quickly."
Jian Hedong, holding the receiver, looked tearfully at Jian Si, whose eyes were swollen from crying: "Sisi, there’s something I’ve never told you about the car accident that killed your brother and sister-in-law."
Jian Si’s nerves instantly tensed up.
Of course, Jian Si remembered that time when she was rushing to the hospital after school, and just as she exited the school gates, a motorcycle suddenly whizzed by, narrowly missing her—if her reflexes hadn’t been quick, she would have been hit.
At that time, she was only focused on her mother in the hospital, with no spare attention for the danger, until she shivered with fear when passing that intersection again later.
She told Jian Hedong about this,
"Sisi, you were young back then, solely intent on finding the perpetrator. When I told you this, you might not have understood, but now, I am telling you to remind you, although the perpetrator’s crime is unforgivable, your brother and sister-in-law are resting in heaven. If you put yourself in danger over this matter again, it would not be worth it. Have you ever thought, because you didn’t see the license plate due to the damage to the vehicle,
Jian Si watched as Jian Hedong walked away step by step, his back lonely and heavy. She had a feeling, this might very well be their last meeting...
No!
Jian Si let go of the handset and started banging on the glass: "Uncle, Uncle!"
But Jian Hedong no longer paid attention to her, not even turning his head. His departure carried a determined finality.
"Uncle, he might be making his last confession," Zhengzheng tugged at her sleeve, "I think we should give Jian Chuan a call."
"Last confession?"
"Yeah." Zhengzheng nodded: "Uncle’s trial isn’t even here yet, but he always talks as if he’s about to pay with his life, even if he has to face that, it would take months, yet he gives off the impression as if he has already concluded everything, as if the verdict doesn’t matter to him."
Jian Si felt the same and quickly phoned Jian Chuan, asking him to keep an eye on every move of Jian Hedong.
"Are you going to continue the investigation into my grandparents’ case?" 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
"Yeah." Jian Si’s expression was very resolute, she had already been investigating for so long, she clearly wouldn’t give up halfway, no matter what background the other party had, she must find him.
The law is fair, and no one can commit bad deeds and escape its punishment.

Whether Nan Yu’s speculation was right or not, Jian Si still decided to thank Nan Zhan. Without his help, she wouldn’t have been able to see Jian Hedong. Although their time together was brief, it was exceedingly precious to them both.
Jian Si prepared two dishes that Nan Zhan liked and packed them into an insulated lunch box: stir-fried lotus slices and steamed pork with rice flour.
The morning passed in a rush. Jian Si organized a huge stack of documents, ran to the courthouse to submit them, and fortunately made it back to the office before noon.
Nan Zhan’s lunchtime was always irregular, but he would never eat before twelve o’clock. Most of the time, it was she who reminded him it was time to eat, and then he would temporarily put down his work.
As Jian Si was going upstairs, she ran into Fei Fan.
"Sisi, shall we have lunch together?"
"I’ve already eaten outside, you go ahead," Jian Si smiled at her, "Dylan urgently needs this document, I’m delivering it to him."
Hearing this, Fei Fan quickly pulled her aside, whispering mysteriously, "There’s a visitor in Dylan’s office, it would be best not to disturb him."
Jian Si thought it must be a client, but Fei Fan spoke even more softly: "It’s said to be a very beautiful woman, gorgeous and poised, but, Xiao Su said she’s too arrogant, she doesn’t like her."
Jian Si made an acknowledging sound, wondering who this person could be. Those who came to Nan Zhan’s office were either colleagues or clients, she had never seen him deal with private matters during office hours.
After Fei Fan left, Jian Si thought of the lunch she had prepared, currently sitting in the cabinet on her desk. But with Fei Fan suggesting it wasn’t a good time to disturb, she hesitated at the door.
