Chapter 44: Meeting

"Lucas, I am already starting to have second thoughts," expressed Violet nervously. Her face was still a sickly pallor.

Lucas placed his hand on her shoulder encouragingly.

"We can’t back out now, Violet. And it’s not as though we are doing anything life-threatening. Also, how would the Alpha know if we don’t tell him about it?" Lucas arched his brows.

Violet nodded, thinking he had a point.

"That should be his car," Violet voiced out, pointing towards a navy blue car. "Well, technically, my car since it was purchased with my money."

When Violet learned the hotel was near to the hospital, her pleading, expectant eyes turned to Lucas, waiting for him to cook up his devious plan. The thought of being able to cause more damage on to Mathew made her feel satisfied.

Lucas suggested vandalism.

That’s how they ended up standing at the parking lot, covering their mouth with dark piece of clothing. Lucas also tied a scarf tightly around her head and inserted sunglass above her eyes to completely conceal Violet’s identity.

When Violet asked Lucas why he didn’t do the same, his excuses were along the line of how it would make him seem uncool.

According to him, he didn’t even care if he got reported.

Lucas pulled out a metal bat and handed it over to her. Violet wondered why he had it along with him, but without bothering to ask, she lifted the bat. The weight falling on her hand made her realize how heavy it was.

Just as the bat was about to come down on the car, Violet halted.

"What’s the matter now?" Lucas questioned.

Violet pulled her lips into a thin line prior to answering, "Maybe I shouldn’t damage it. It’s a car I treasured a lot. I mean, if I get the pack back, I don’t want to have a broken car."

Lucas narrowed his eyes at her, letting her silently know it was too late to back down now.

Violet sighed in submission. "Fine, alright."

The next instant Violet raised the bat in her hand and slammed it hard against the metal hood of the car, leaving behind a dent. The weight of the bat made her movement slightly clumsy.

Feeling proud of herself, Violet looked towards Lucas for a compliment.

Lucas smiled in approval before Violet threw the bat against the doors hard and destroyed the rearview.

Violet then put down the bat and stretched her arms for a while. Following that, Violet targeted the window of the car. Although the first attack did not cause a damage, when she repeated it, the glass smashed through.

But the next instant the alarm system in the car went off, creating a blaring loud noise.

The startled Violet looked towards Lucas for a solution.

"Fuck, I didn’t think about this," Lucas expressed.

The loud noise instantly had the security officers come out to the parking lot. In order to prevent them from getting caught, Lucas grabbed Violet by her stomach and picked her up, running away from there with her.

The high-end hotel had heavy security with guards from all sides trying to capture them. However, as a werewolf, Lucas was confident his speed and agility would prevent him from getting caught by humans.

"No worries, Princess. We will get out of here safe and sound," he reassured.

But the next instant, he reached a dead end. Staring at the large wall in front of him, he turned back to find a couple of security guards surround them, arranged in a position to take actions against them.

Violet raised her head, looking at Lucas meaningfully.

"Recently, I have noticed a lot of turmoil has been going on in your pack, Alpha Mathew. What is it about?" asked the elderly man sitting in the middle.

The man’s long white beard, his wrinkly skin, and slightly hunched back was a clear indicator of old age. However, despite his age, when those deep-seated eyes fell on Mathew, an invisible pressure choked him. He was the head of the council, Jacob Millar.

Mathew clenched his hand into a tight fist to gather his confidence.

Standing up, he held his head high and steadily spoke out, "I apologize for the incompetence on mismanaging my pack and letting the world see a joke.

As you all might have heard, my Luna has left the pack for more than a month after her indecent behaviour. She fell in love with someone else, got impregnated, and decided to break our mate bond for him.

Now, she is unwilling to return to the pack to be with her new lover. All of this has caused me inevitable grief, and even now, I have not been able to move on from this."

Another voice in the council expressed, "Is that what the truth is?"

"Yes. If I dare to have any treasonous thoughts, I am willing to be subjected to the worst torture," Mathew confidently spoke out.

"Oh?" remarked a member of the council. "The word has come to me you have gotten into an altercation with Alpha James of Yellow Arrow pack over the mines owned by your pack."

James and Mathew exchanged a look. Although the matters between them have been tense in private, airing their dirty laundry in front of these other Alphas and the council would only allow them for to be taken advantage of.

Therefore, both of them decided to put their difference aside for a while and assume a friendly relationship.

James laughed. "You have it all wrong. It’s a mere quarrel between two close friends. I am ashamed the matter was brought up here."

Mathew added, "Yes, Alpha James and I went into an argument about a silly matter due to differences in our tastes. That is all."

Before the man could say anything, the knocks were heard, and the door was pushed open. A tall, imposing man entered the room, and a polite smile was present on his face.

"Excuse me for imposing here," he enunciated calmly.

Sylas’s presence here shook the composure of everyone. Although Sylas carried himself with a serene grace, there was an inevitable pressure on everyone that unsettled them.

"That’s him, right?"

"Yeah, that’s Sylas Hale."

"What is he doing here?"

"He sure is imposing as ever."

The conversation going on around him gave Mathew an idea on who the man was. He furrowed his brows as a negative feeling grew at the pit of his stomach.

For him to suddenly show up here, Mathew did not feel good about it. Violet was under his wing after all.

Confusion clouded his eyes when he thought the man in front of him appeared familiar. It frustrated him when he couldn’t exactly pinpoint where he saw him.

Jacob’s gaze turned sharp, and his tone was harsh when he stated, "As rude as ever, Sylas Hale. Where are your manners? Why are you interrupting here when there is a meeting going on? Are you challenging the council?"

The conversation between the two Alphas beside him reached Mathew.

"Does the Head not like him?" asked one of them.

The other responded, "You didn’t hear of the rumors? Apparently, Alpha Sylas was offered to join the council multiple times. They even resorted to threatening him. However, he remained steadfast in turning them now."

"A position in the council? That’s grand. Only he would have the privilege to turn it down."

Mathew’s stomach only churned in envy upon hearing that.

Sylas’s smile widened.

"Head, it has been a while since I last saw you. There are only few more years left to your life. It would be disappointing if you passed them by being bitter and harsh," commented Sylas.

The Head growled at him as Sylas’s blunt words challenged his authority.

"As much as I would love to catch up with you, I have been quite busy recently. I am simply here to present a case that interests me. May I?"

"A mere rogue dares to present a case? Are you making fun of authority of the council?" Jacob’s tone dropped.

The expression on Sylas’s face turned solemn next. The calm eyes caused the tension in the room to thicken, letting others know he wasn’t to be trifled with.

Before Sylas could say anything, the advisor stood up in an attempt to ease the atmosphere and stated, "Since you took the trouble to come here, I am sure the matter is of great concern. Do present it."
