The Revenge of the Reborn Supreme Sovereign-Chapter 107 - 104: Never Take It Off!
"Yuchen, this outfit was designed by the famous Italian designer Leonarc, and there are only one hundred pieces in the world! It was custom-tailored just for you. Happy birthday!"
"Yuchen, I bought this pearl with three months of my pocket money. Happy birthday!"
"Yuchen, this is an Audi TT for you! Although you don’t have a driver’s license yet, you don’t have to worry about driving it anywhere you want in Jiangzhou. Haha!"
"Yuchen, I made my dad bid on this necklace for me at the Xiangjiang auction. Happy birthday!"
Wave after wave, box after box. Soon, a large table in front of Ji Yuchen was piled high with birthday gifts, and they were certainly not cheap ones. Although these gifts were expensive, for these second-generation scions who were either rich or powerful, the pressure of giving them wasn’t very high. Plus, Ji Yuchen’s character had always earned her their approval, so these items really weren’t a big deal.
Without playing any coy games, Ji Yuchen knew that for these classmates, refusing their expensive presents would be a slap in the face. Fully aware of this, she accepted each one graciously, her face wreathed in smiles as she constantly said her thanks.
In no time, all the students had presented their gifts.
Only Qin Fan was left.
Everyone’s gaze shifted to him.
Ge Yabing jeered coldly, "Qin Fan, today is Yuchen’s birthday. You came all this way, surely you didn’t come empty-handed?"
"Yabing!" Ji Yuchen cried, anxiously tugging at Ge Yabing’s clothes.
She had only invited Qin Fan because she wanted to see him. She hadn’t considered any other possibilities. Little did she realize that her one thoughtless act would drag Qin Fan into one messy situation after another. Ge Yabing’s remark was clearly intended to embarrass him. Given that Qin Fan lived in an urban village, how could he possibly produce a gift comparable to theirs? If he had no gift, or only a cheap one, what scathing insults would come from Ge Yabing’s unforgiving tongue?
At this thought, Ji Yuchen grew anxious. She hastily said, "Yabing, I’m just happy that Qin Fan could come. A gift isn’t important! Besides, I threw this party for everyone to get together and have fun, not to collect presents!"
"That may be so, but a gift is a token of thoughtfulness and affection! If you don’t even have a birthday gift, what’s the difference between that and just showing up to mooch food and drink?" Ge Yabing said, staring at Qin Fan with biting severity. Then, she turned to the other students. "Wouldn’t you all agree?"
"That does seem right!"
"Well, I never go to someone’s birthday party empty-handed!"
"We can’t speak for everyone, but people like us certainly know better!"
"Oh, come on, Yuchen isn’t going to miss one birthday gift!"
"Still, mooching is better than giving something cheap that only costs a hundred or so yuan, haha!"
Although the students no longer dared to provoke Qin Fan as openly as before, with the crowd ganging up on him like this, they weren’t afraid to throw in a few jeers and taunts. They didn’t believe he would get violent over a few words.
They guessed right.
Qin Fan certainly wouldn’t attack them over a few sentences. Faced with the barrage of scorn and ridicule, he just gave a playful, derisive smile.
"Qin Fan, I’m so sorry, I... I didn’t expect it to turn out like this! Please don’t overthink it. I don’t care about gifts. As long as you could come, I’m happy!" Seeing the situation spiraling out of her control, Ji Yuchen was on the verge of tears. She gave the hem of Qin Fan’s sleeve a subtle tug as she explained in a panic.
"It’s fine," Qin Fan said with a calm smile. "They’re right. A birthday gift is a thoughtful gesture, so I prepared one for you, too."
After speaking, under the contemptuous gazes of the students who were eagerly watching the show, Qin Fan took out a plain box from his pocket containing the Green Bead Chain.
The moment the box appeared, many students couldn’t help but snicker when they saw its worn and tattered edges.
What kind of treasure could possibly be in a box like that? Given Qin Fan’s circumstances, it’s painfully obvious!
Seeing this, Xu Jiayi’s brow furrowed.
Either don’t give a gift at all, or don’t give something so cheap. If Qin Fan really pulls out something worthless, I’ll be truly disappointed and start to doubt my own judgment.
As the snickering died down, the atmosphere fell silent.
CLICK.
The box opened, revealing the Green Bead Chain, its luster purposely suppressed by Qin Fan.
Taking out the Green Bead Chain, Qin Fan smiled faintly at Ji Yuchen. "Happy birthday."
"Pfft!"
"Haha!"
"Dude, is that thing even worth a hundred bucks?"
"You’d get change back from a hundred, haha!"
When the students caught sight of the Green Bead Chain, they all burst out laughing. These students came from wealthy or powerful families, which meant they were quite worldly. While they might not be able to discern the exact grade of precious jewels, they could certainly tell street-stall trinkets from real treasures at a glance.
And the lusterless item Qin Fan held, taken from a dilapidated box, looked like a typical street-stall product to them. Forget luxurious; to put it bluntly, you could buy a whole pile of them for a few hundred yuan!
"Qin Fan, this is what you’re giving her?" Ge Yabing asked, stunned. She knew Qin Fan wasn’t well-off, but she didn’t think he’d stoop to giving something from a street stall.
However, her comment was ignored not only by Qin Fan but by Ji Yuchen as well. As mentioned before, Ji Yuchen didn’t care about the gift.
Looking at the simple chain, Ji Yuchen’s face broke into a wide smile. "Qin Fan, thank you! Will you..." She paused for a moment, then continued, "Will you help me put it on?"
What?!
Ji Yuchen’s words sent a ripple of shock through the room.
Such a cheap trinket, and Yuchen is actually asking Qin Fan to help her put it on? This... Has she been bewitched by Qin Fan’s Love Potion? Has she lost her mind, or is this just some sudden whim?
"Okay," Qin Fan nodded with a light smile.
He began to place the Green Bead Chain around Ji Yuchen’s neck. As he did, he lowered his voice to a grave whisper only she could hear, "No matter what happens, never take this chain off. Remember, no matter what."
Stunned by his solemn tone, Ji Yuchen froze.
Never take it off? What does that mean?
But she didn’t dwell on it. Her face blushing slightly, she whispered softly, "Okay! I promise you!"
As the words left her lips, she herself didn’t know what had possessed her to ask Qin Fan to put the chain on her, much less why she had so readily agreed to never take it off.
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday, dear Yuchen, happy birthday to you."
Suddenly, before Qin Fan could finish fastening the chain, a charming and graceful young woman entered the Sky Garden’s entrance. She was pushing a cake cart and singing the birthday song.
"Mom!" Ji Yuchen cried out in a panic.
Qin Fan’s hands froze.
The young woman’s eyes flew wide open.
But her shocked gaze wasn’t directed at Ji Yuchen or Qin Fan. Instead, her eyes were locked onto the Green Bead Chain now resting around Ji Yuchen’s neck, her expression one of utter disbelief.
