Chapter 78: Chapter 76: Comrade Nanzhou in a Dilemma
Chapter 78 -76: Comrade Nanzhou in a Dilemma
“The process is necessary,” Jingqiu said softly, trying to diminish the tension.
“Quick, come inside first, I’ll help you apply some medicine,” she urged.
“No need, I’m afraid that once I step inside, Uncle Lu will discover me and I’ll end up getting beaten again,” he declined her offer.
“He won’t do it again,” she assured him.
Jiang Nanzhou looked at Jingqiu shielding him and felt a surge of joy, “I just came to see you.” Having said that, he took out a rabbit fur from his backpack, “This is a rabbit I caught in my spare time. I kept the pelt. That rabbit was quite large, with clean, white fur. It would make for really warm gloves in the winter.”
As Jingqiu touched the soft rabbit fur in her hand, she felt moved, “It’s so soft, I really like it.”
Not daring to stay long, Jiang Nanzhou looked around and said, “Are you free this Sunday? Let’s go watch a movie.”
After pondering for a moment, Jingqiu replied, “I’m free in the evening.”
Seeing her agreement, Jiang Nanzhou didn’t linger and turned to leave.
Watching him limp away, Jingqiu quickly reached out to him, “What happened to your leg? Did my dad hit you as well?”
“No, it was just a bump during a drill. It’s almost healed. Don’t worry, I’ll be able to walk normally in a couple of days,” he reassured her.
But Jingqiu wasn’t convinced that he could recover in two days. Perhaps without her father’s interference, he might heal in that time, but now it was uncertain, “I’ll accompany you to the hospital.”
“There’s no need, I can go by myself. See you the day after tomorrow,” he said, dismissing her concern.
A short while after Jiang Nanzhou left with a limp, her uncle and Father Lu came back together.
“Dad, did you hit Jiang Nanzhou?” she asked directly.
Father Lu was just back home and immediately faced his daughter’s interrogation, especially about another man, and he felt deeply wronged. “Did that kid come to you with complaints?”
Jingqiu quickly shook her head, “No… Dad, please don’t be angry. If you don’t like him, then I’ll make things clear with him tomorrow.”
Yang Pinggui hastened to say, “You’re such a child. Do you think your dad is unreasonable? You and Comrade Nanzhou are in a free relationship, and our families have been friends for generations. We elders actually hope to see things work out between you. Right, brother-in-law?”
Lu Xianrun snorted and said, “That kid’s too sneaky, doing things behind our backs like that.”
In fact, Lu Xianrun didn’t have many objections to their relationship, but he found it hard to accept the fact that his daughter was going to be married off.
In Lu Xianrun’s view, the two were old enough to be in a relationship and it wasn’t too late for them to get married.
It had only been a year since his daughter returned from the countryside, and his wife had left him. He was struggling to accept these changes.
Yet his daughter was of age, and as a father, he knew he couldn’t stand in her way.
Though he was upset, he had to vent his frustration on someone.
But marrying his daughter wasn’t going to be that simple. If someone couldn’t withstand his fists, they could forget about it.
“Dad, it wasn’t done in silence. We had just established our relationship when you all left. Now that you’re back, I’m telling you right away,” she explained.
Pointing at Jingqiu, Lu Xianrun complained to Yang Pinggui, “See, I haven’t even said much, and she’s already taking his side.”
Yang Pinggui smiled and patted his shoulder, “Brother-in-law, you should be content. Just look at Mingcheng. Once he got a wife, it’s all about his wife, with me and his mom moved to the backseat. The key problem is, we don’t even get to see him once or twice a year.”
“Our daughter is different. For her college applications, she chose a university in our city wanting to stay close to you. And about her suitor, Jiang Nanzhou is now staying in our district. If they get married in the future, they would stay close to you. Qiuqiu, am I right?”
“Ah, Uncle is spot on. I simply don’t want to be too far from Dad, so I felt that Comrade Nanzhou would be most suitable for me. Dad, you see, Comrade Nanzhou has just been transferred here. He definitely won’t be leaving anytime soon. Moreover, he’s from a single-parent family and lives with his grandpa. So, when we get married, Grandpa could also come and live with us here, no need to worry about marrying off to another place. Furthermore, he’s very supportive of my attending university and has even said he would be willing to wait for me to graduate.”
“He’s willing to wait until you graduate from university?” Lu Xianrun was naturally aware of Jiang Nanzhou’s situation, and he wasn’t opposed to it, but now hearing his daughter say so, he was quite surprised.
“Yes.” Lu Jingqiu felt rather guilty. In order to calm her father down, she had spoken for Jiang Nanzhou directly.
As for the future… well, they would just have to take things one step at a time.
“That kid does have some sense,” commented Lu Xianrun.
Yang Pinggui felt a little sorry for Comrade Jiang. As far as he knew, Jiang Nanzhou was already twenty-five this year. If he waited for Qiuqiu to graduate, he’d be nearly thirty, and the Jiang’s family probably wouldn’t like that. But now wasn’t the time to talk about this. “Brother-in-law, I heard you gave that lad a good thrashing yesterday. Felt good, didn’t it?”
“That kid knows his place.”
Seeing her dad feeling triumphant, Lu Jingqiu hurried to the kitchen to whip up two dishes, asking her uncle to have a few drinks with her dad.
After seeing Uncle off, Lu Xianrun pointed to a chair nearby, gesturing her to sit down, “Actually, Dad has thought about your marriage too. To tell the truth, I have a liking for the kid Lih Huakun.”
Hearing her dad’s words, Lu Jingqiu almost dropped her jaw, “Dad, how come you thought of Comrade Lih? I don’t really cross paths with him much.”
“Compared with Nanzhou, Lih’s character is a bit livelier, he knows how to cheer people up, and he comes from a family of medical professionals, with many sons; he’s the third in line. If you got together with him, even if you settled in West City, the family wouldn’t really object. Nanzhou, that kid, is somewhat cool and tough. He’s excellent at his job, but in life, such a cool character, without a hint of warmth, how would he make my daughter happy? Plus his family is complicated. You don’t have a mother now, and it’s almost the same on his side too. With no elder to look after you, in the end, you’ll be the one suffering. Yet who would have thought, in the end, it’d be Nanzhou, this child.”
“Dad, thank you for considering so much for me. I didn’t live up to your expectations.”
Lu Xianrun waved it off with a smile, “Nanzhou’s not bad either. In Dad’s eyes, both these kids are more dependable than Gao Shu, decisive in their actions. Whether you choose Huakun or Nanzhou, Dad would be happy with either.”
“Then why did you hit him?”
“Striking him is acknowledging him. My daughter, Lu Xianrun, isn’t so easy to marry off.”
Hearing her dad say these things, Lu Jingqiu suddenly had tears in her eyes, “Dad.”
In her previous life, when she was in the sanatorium, her aunt visited her the most, but she knew that her dad was the one who worried about her the most.
He knew that only in the sanatorium could his daughter recover quickly, and he just waited for the day to bring her home. Sadly, he never knew the truth behind the sanatorium, and in waiting, they were woefully separated.

Lu Xianrun patted his daughter’s shoulder to comfort her. “What’s with the tears? Now that you and he are dating, Dad isn’t one of those old-fashioned parents. I’ll give him more leave during this period, let you two spend more time together to deepen your feelings. Of course, if he ever mistreats you, even slightly, you must tell Dad. I’ll make a decision for you.”
Lu Jingqiu nodded and chuckled, “Dad, I’m an adult now, not a little kid anymore.”
“In Dad’s eyes, you’re still someone who can be easily deceived.”
“…”
Dad surely didn’t think that of her in her previous life, too, did he? Faced with a daughter that caused him endless worry, her father must have been heartbroken over her.
She owed her parents far too much in her previous life.
