Chapter 313: The plea of the queen - I

One of the dolls was dressed in pink and the other one was dressed in red.

Why was it so difficult to choose?

"Genevive," I turned around just in time to see my mother entering my bedroom.

"Oh?" She frowned the moment she saw me. I was not yet dressed for the event today where my sister was going to be crowned as this first crowned Princess of the country.

But in my defence, it was still very early.

"Is there a reason why you are not dressed, child?" She came closer and stood in front of me.

I shrugged and pointed out my dolls. " I can’t use which one I want to play with."

"Play?" She chuckled. "why must you do this always? You are not supposed to play, Dear one. You are supposed to get ready for your sister’s coronation."

But I wanted to play. I was going to have to sit through an entire ceremony of nothing but boring speeches made by people only for a five second crowning ceremony that I was actually going to be excited for. Other than that I was not at all interested in anything else.

"Come now," she patted my bum, "I must get you ready at least. Little Catherine is not going to attend, which is why you need to get ready first before I move on to your sister."

Of course she was not. If Catherine attended then I was sure that all I was going to hear was the cries of a baby.

"This? Or this?" Mother pulled out two dresses and showed them to me in hopes that I would finally be able to choose a dress.

"I like the blue one," I commented when I saw what she was holding in her right hand but then turned to the other hand which had a red dress. "The red would be matching to the one you are wearing."

She sighed, "I see." She placed boots back before pulling out a pink dress that I loved but had not had the chance to wear yet. "This?"

"Yes!"

I had already bathed, and it was easy for her to dress me when I was in my Chemise.

Once in front of the mirror with me sitting on a little stool and her occupying the one I was supposed to sit on, I let her comb my hair as I continued to hum a tune of a folklore.

"What is the first rule when it comes to ruling a country?"

I sighed, bored with the fact that I have to do it every day. "To think of the people."

"Yes, good." She smiled. "because everything we do is to be done for the people that have made us who we are."

"I knowww," I groaned. Why did we have to talk about it daily?

That’s when I realised. Mother was already dressed for the day. In fact, she was here getting me ready instead of my maids and governess.

"Why are you dressed?" I narrowed my eyes on her. "You are never dressed at this time of the day."

"I am not?" She raised her brows.

"No."

"Huh," she replied. "I am dressed because I was carrying out my duties which I will be missing when I will be conducting the ceremony."

"You could not miss even a day?"

"No, not when people depend on you. You don’t mess even a day. No Matter how important it is to you."

I knew it was an important day for my mother. After all, the first daughter, the heir to the throne was getting crowned as the royal princess and was just one step away from becoming the Queen.

"Is that what it is to become queen?" I frowned lightly. "because I don’t want to work all day."

She laughed at that and tucked my hair behind my ear. "When you see how happy you make people by performing your duties towards them, you will understand what I do and why I do it, my daughter. I want to realise how important you are to them, how you hold their lives in your palm, you will understand the importance of missing even one of your duties."

We were that important? "But," I gulped as fear rose in my mind, "what if I mess up someday?"

She chuckled and patted my hair, done with whatever style she was making. "Everyone messes up. What matters is, how are you clear it."

****

"Your highness," someone shook me, "wake up."

I grimaced, before opening my eyes and adjusting to the light of the small candle illuminating the entire dark room.

It was still night then? Why were they waking me?

"What?" I rasped out as my eyes met Anna’s. Why was she here?

I felt so tired, hardly able to get up and do something. Why did I feel so? I had no idea.

"Must I remind you, it is the time for the execution of a People." She commented dryly, as if it was all a burden for her and she could not be bothered for less.

Oh?

Oh.. dear.

Sleep Vanished immediately and I got up from the bed to stare at Anna, hoping that she was joking or she would tell me that Tristan changed his mind. But by the look on her face, it looks like she proved a foot was about to happen.

"If we cannot have reliable staff, we cannot function properly." She shook her head in disappointment. "I would much rather have the entire staff changed than to worry about another mutiny or coup."

So she definitely had her priorities set.

Loyalty was what mattered to them the most and to think of it, I had damaged it. I had made others damage it too.

Anna pulled the covers off of me with an impatient look and I got out of the bed.

She dragged me to the bath and within quick minutes, I was ready.

What was I ready for? I was ready to lead people to their execution.
