The President is Being Shameless Again-Chapter 385: Yan Huaian Could Barely Believe His Eyes. It Was A Perfectly Normal Engagement, So Why Would They Come Out So Early?
Just now, when he saw the disappointment in Yu Zi’s eyes, it really felt as though his heart was struck with a huge hammer. His chest hurt as though it had been shattered. He did not even have the guts to look at Yu Zi.
“You’re still blaming us for this!” Pan Yunfeng pointed at Yue Jingchen, beside herself in anger.
She had always thought that the Yu family looked down on them. They never did, of course, but Pan Yunfeng never stopped believing that.
The poorer she thought her family was, the largest the distance she perceived between the two families, the lower her self-esteem went. She kept thinking the worst of others, and even the most innocent of the Yu family’s actions ended up looking like contempt in her eyes.
Yue Jingchen no longer wanted to speak to Pan Yunfeng. He just stayed there, his face in his hands.
Just then, the waitress pushed in her trolley laden with dishes, ready to serve the first round of hot dishes. When she entered, however, she froze. Although the room was not in chaos, it was not exactly a fun party either.
The entire Yu family was gone, and there were only the three of them left in the large room. A chair had even fallen to the ground, and the main hero of the day was just sitting there dejectedly. He seemed to be… crying?
The waitress did not say anything, placing the dishes on the table as though she had not noticed anything amiss.
Pan Yunfeng suddenly thought of something, and she said, “Have you started cooking the rest yet? If you haven’t, just cancel them.”
The waitress paused for a moment before replying, “We haven’t started on some dishes yet, but some of them are already on the way.”
“Then what should we do? We don’t plan on eating them, so we won’t pay even if you bring the dishes here. We’re leaving now, and look, we haven’t touched the dishes on the table yet either. Just take them all back.” Pan Yunfeng pointed at the cold appetizer on the table and the hot dish that had just been served.
She even murmured, “They’re so irresponsible. The bride’s side is supposed to pay for the engagement banquet, but now they just up and left, leaving behind a whole table of food. Who’s going to pay for that? No wonder Yu Zi’s like that, that irresponsibility runs in the family.”
The waitress did not understand everything, but she did understand the part about paying, so she said, “Since they booked a set course for the engagement banquet, it’s already been paid for.”
Pan Yunfeng blinked and then looked at him in surprise, her entire face lighting up. “Really?! Why didn’t you say so sooner!”
The waitress thought to herself, ‘How would I know what you’re thinking? As if I’d just suddenly mention that.’
On the surface, however, she still asked politely, “Then, about the courses that haven’t been started yet…”
“If we cancel those, can we get the money back?” Pan Yunfeng asked.
“I’m sorry, but we can’t give refunds for course meals,” the waitress replied politely.
“I see.” It was not their money to begin with, so Pan Yunfeng did not really mind. She said, “Alright then, don’t cancel them, just serve them all. Once they’re all here, come and help us pack them for takeaway.”
After that, she turned and told Yue Xingan, “Let’s just eat these first. These dishes should be enough for us, and once the rest arrive, we’ll just take them away straight. I bet we won’t have to cook anything for days at this rate.”
Next, she turned to Yue Jingchen, who was still sitting dejectedly in a chair with his face in his hands, and said, “Don’t be too upset, and don’t worry. You’re a man, so how could you cry like that? That Yu Zi’s just throwing a tantrum. This is why I don’t really approve of you two. She’s a rich young heiress, and her family has spoiled her rotten, so she’s extremely unreasonable. I mean, look at this perfectly solemn and important engagement today. She canceled it, just like that! When she gets married later, wouldn’t she just suddenly decide to call off the wedding at the altar, too? It’s best for you to know what she’s really like as early as possible.”
“What do you mean, what she’s really like!” Yue Jingchen jumped to his feet, looking at Pan Yunfeng with his red eyes. “She tolerated everything and never put a foot out of line, so why can’t you ever be satisfied with her?!”
“You… I see! I see! I see! I can’t believe you dared to talk to your mother like that, just because of some woman! I went through all that pain to give birth to you, but I’m still not as important as an outsider to you! You’re already taking her side even though you’re not married yet, so where will I be once she actually marries into the family?” Pan Yunfeng slapped her thighs with her hands and suddenly wailed, “Oh, woe is me! This old lady will soon be bullied to death by my daughter-in-law!”
“Stop talking, I’m begging you! Just stop!” Yue Jingchen said in agony.
Pan Yunfeng pursed her lips and held it in for a long time before she said, “Fine, but don’t resent me for it. If that Yu Zi is really that into you, you just have to win her over again. You’ve been dating for so many years, so I really don’t think she can give up on you so easily. If she really can, then it’s best for you to break up with such a heartless woman while you can.”
After Pan Yunfeng said that, she sat down to eat with Yue Xingan, as though this had nothing to do with her.
As she ate, however, she continued to curse and swear, berating the Yu family. She scolded every member of the Yu family, as though none of them were any good, and all of them were just here to bully the Yue family.
Yue Jingchen could not bear to listen any longer, so he just wiped his face and left.
…
Yan Huaian had purposely chosen a seat where he could see the corridor leading from the rooms into the main dining hall. There were three dishes in front of him, but he only occasionally reached his chopsticks into them. Clearly, his attention was not on his food. He did not even lower his head, his gaze trained on the direction of the corridor. In fact, he was picking his food subconsciously, so he did not even know which dish and which plate he was eating from.
Not long later, he was shocked to see the Yu family coming out of the room.
Yan Huaian could barely believe his eyes. It was a perfectly normal engagement, so why would they come out so early?
On the other hand, he noticed that the members of the Yu family all looked far from pleased, and Yu Zi’s eyes were completely red, as though she had been crying.
Yu Gesheng and Yuan Hejing had dark expressions, whereas Yu Han was protecting his parents and his sister, his expression cold.
No matter how he looked at it, they did not seem to have had a pleasant discussion with the Yue family.
Could it be that the negotiations fell through and the engagement was off?
Yan Huaian’s heart skipped a beat, and his mind began to work.
He had secretly investigated everything about Yu Zi’s boyfriend before, so he knew everything from the man’s own history to his parents’. In fact, Yan Huaian even knew every detail about their relatives.
That was why Yan Huaian knew Yue Jingchen’s parents even better than Yu Zi did.
Not long later, he saw the waitress push the cart inside, so he called the manager over and whispered something into the manager’s ear.
The manager was surprised for a second, but he immediately recovered and rearranged his features into a serious expression. He indicated to Yan Huaian that he understood, and then he left.
Yan Huaian’s eyes had been following Yu Zi the entire time, and he only pulled back his gaze when she walked out of sight.
Just then, the waitress who had served the food inside walked up to him, led by the manager.
“President Yan, Xiao Yu is the waitress who brought the food into Riverside Orchid Hall earlier,” the manager said. He then turned to Xiao Yu and said, “Answer all of President Yan’s questions carefully.”
“Okay.” Xiao Yu nodded hastily and looked at Yan Huaian.
Although she did not harbor any other intentions for Yan Huaian, she still blushed a little when she faced him.
“What happened in that room earlier? It looked to me like things didn’t end well,” Yan Huaian ventured, looking quite calm.
Xiao Yu could not help but wonder, what did President Yuan mean by this? Was he testing the quality of the waitstaff in Sheng Yue? Or was he suspecting that they served the customers badly, causing them to leave in a huff?”
“I’m not very sure either. When I went in, there were only three people left in the room. Advocate Yu and his family had already left, and a chair in the room had fallen over.” The waitress thought it over. “That chair was originally the one the lady of that family of three had taken. When I went in, none of them were in their initial seats. They were all standing.”
Yu Gesheng was a nationally-renowned advocate, and he came to Sheng Yue quite often too, usually to discuss legal matters with famous politicians and businessmen. Sometimes, he would get treated to a meal after winning a case too, so the waitstaff at such a high-end establishment all knew Yu Gesheng quite well.
After that, Xiao Yu told Yan Huaian everything Pan Yunfeng said, word for word.
Yan Huaian raised an eyebrow, then he let the manager and Xiao Yu leave.
Not long after the two of them left, he saw Yue Jingchen run out of the room and rush away from the hotel, red-eyed.
Having seen that, Yan Huaian was now absolutely certain that Yu Zi and Yue Jingchen’s engagement had fallen through.
Since this engagement had not worked, he would not give them the chance to try again.
Pulling his gaze back in a relatively good mood, he could finally focus on his mood. He had a great appetite too, and he looked pleased the entire time, the corners of his lips rising.
The manager had been secretly watching Yan Huaian’s reactions the entire time. After all, that was his boss, so he could not afford to annoy his boss here.
Now, he was watching Yan Huaian enjoy his meal when suddenly a voice said beside him, “Looks like President Yan’s pretty happy with the taste of the food here.”
The manager was taken aback, but then he turned around and saw that the restaurant’s head chef had approached him before he knew it. The chef’s eyes were narrowed as he looked at Yan Huaian eating in the distance, his expression one of utmost relief.
In the manager’s eyes, however, the chef somehow looked a little pervy.
“If you’re not watching over them in the kitchen, the young ones might go wild again,” the manager said.
