Ruan Yuan pondered for a moment. "I’m not sure either."
But if it were before, Little Zhi would never have chosen to leave her alone at a time like this.
She let out a long sigh and smiled faintly, her face full of weariness. "You should treat her a little better."
"I know." Shi Weiqing responded softly. Even though doubts weighed heavily on his heart, he refrained from asking further questions.
After Chen Cai escorted the two people upstairs and gave a few instructions, he quickly turned and left.
In a desolate area filled with steel bars and bricks, a young girl sat on a filthy boulder, hugging her knees, deep in thought.
The setting sun cast its soft rays upon her. She gazed in the direction of the light, her almond-shaped hazel eyes narrowing slightly, a ripple of light shimmering in their depths.
Her waist was suddenly embraced from behind. Startled, she froze momentarily, but gradually relaxed upon feeling a warm and familiar presence.
"Shi Wei, can you lock K up?" Yu Zhi leaned against the man’s shoulder, playing with his long, well-defined fingers.
She didn’t trust any other place. Only there was fitting enough.
"I can." Shi Wei pressed his cheek against the girl’s smooth, soft skin, his fingertips slipping between hers, slowly intertwining their fingers.
Neither spoke further. They enjoyed the fleeting silence together, their clasped hands as if inseparable.
When Xu Linchuan rushed to the outskirts after receiving an alarming text, Ruan Yuan, who was severely injured, had already been taken away in an ambulance.
"Where’s my sister? Is she hurt?" He anxiously searched for the girl’s figure, sweat-drenched hair clinging to his forehead.
"No, she went to the hospital with Ruan Yuan." Shi Wei handed him a cigarette, his fair jaw gesturing lightly toward the second floor.
Xu Linchuan briefly sighed in relief, but as he followed the man upstairs and saw K lying unconscious on the ground, he couldn’t stay calm.
He crouched down, pointing at the noticeable gunshot wound on K’s shoulder, his hand holding the cigarette trembling. "Master Shi, was this your doing?"
The man’s text only mentioned Ruan Yuan being kidnapped and told him to come to take away the perpetrator.
It hadn’t said anything about a gunfight...
"Yes." Shi Wei sat on a stool with an indifferent expression, one leg crossed over the other, leaning back in a relaxed posture.
To him, it was nothing more than an insignificant incident.
Xu Linchuan inhaled deeply, unable to hold back from lecturing the man. "Having a gun is one thing, but couldn’t you handle it another way? Did you have to shoot him? What if someone died—"
"He tried to kill Zhizhi."
With that single sentence, Shi Wei caused Xu Linchuan’s face to darken. The cigarette he was about to place in his mouth paused midair.
"That bastard tried to kill my sister?" Xu Linchuan landed a fist squarely on K’s face.
Even the cigarette ash scattered across K’s skin.
At that moment, Xu Linchuan’s mind wasn’t concerned about the legality of firearms or even his professional ethics. All he cared about was venting his anger on his sister’s behalf.
Shi Wei cast him a light glance. "Enough. Take him away first."
He still needed to rush to the hospital to be with his little girl.
Xu Linchuan agreed, knowing there was no time to waste. He quickly called over the men in black standing nearby to carry K out.
The group walked toward where the vehicles were parked. After a long, silent journey, Xu Linchuan patted Shi Wei on the shoulder, asking, "Death penalty?"
Shi Wei chuckled lightly, his gaze settling on the dagger embedded in K’s wrist bone, exuding a chilling aura. "What do you think?"
Xu Linchuan met his jet-black eyes for a few seconds before replying, "Got it." He’d already arrived at an answer in his heart.

In a VIP hospital room.
The young girl sat by the bedside, holding an ice pack, gently pressing it to the swollen side of Ruan Yuan’s face.
Once the utterly exhausted woman gradually fell asleep, the girl tiptoed out with her phone to the balcony.
Ruan Yuan’s phone didn’t have a password. Yu Zhi didn’t go through her things but directly opened the contact list.
When she saw one particular, highly distinctive note, her delicate eyebrows arched slightly.
The call connected quickly, and a soft male voice came through the receiver.
"Little brother, Ruan Yuan is hurt. Do you have time to come to the hospital?" Yu Zhi got straight to the point, explaining the reason for her call.
It must be said, Shi Yin froze for several seconds upon hearing that term of address before he reacted.
He cleared his throat awkwardly. Though her calling him "little brother" was appropriate, given the age difference, it still felt strange to him.
"Little brother?"
"Mhm, what did you just say?"
Yu Zhi: "..."
So, after all that explanation, he hadn’t been listening at all.
With great patience, she repeated herself, provided the hospital address, and then returned to the room to continue cooling Ruan Yuan’s face with the ice pack.
Shi Yin initially assumed that Ruan Yuan only suffered minor injuries, so he wasn’t overly worried.
But when he saw the woman lying pale and gaunt on the hospital bed, he realized just how wrong he’d been.
"What happened to her?" Shi Yin frowned deeply, his gaze lingering on the vivid finger marks on her swollen face.
Yu Zhi had already prepared her explanation. "She was kidnapped."
"Kidnapped..." Shi Yin’s eyes briefly flickered with an unreadable emotion, and the hand resting on the bed rail clenched tighter.
He silently looked at her for a long time before speaking, his voice hoarse. "Where else is she injured?"
"There are two whip marks on her body."
"Are they severe?"
"The doctor said it will take a month to fully heal." Thankfully, they wouldn’t leave scars.
If they did, she would have felt guilty for the rest of her life.
"Mhm." Shi Yin lowered his gaze slightly, his long lashes masking the fleeting emotions in his eyes.
He adjusted Ruan Yuan’s blanket, gripped her hand, and silently stayed by her side.
Yu Zhi’s eyes flicked between the two, then she quietly left the room to give them space to build their connection.
She sat on a bench in the corridor, staring at the medical posters on the opposite wall with a bored expression, yawning lazily.
The quiet atmosphere lulled Yu Zhi into sleepiness. Resting her chin on her hand, she closed her eyes, her head nodding as she began to doze off.
Drowsily, she felt a warm arm wrap around her. The scent of the person was familiar, and his embrace was filled with tenderness.
It made her completely lower her guard. Habitually clutching at his shirt, she nestled into his arms and fell into a deep sleep.
