The Noble Lady's Rebirth: She just wants to Rest in Peace!-Chapter 311 - 303: The Wedding Ceremony Is Complete
Gu Yifeng also couldn’t help but smile.
"Wu Xueqin has been quite restless these days. I think I should remind her gently," Gu Yifeng said as he sat with her on the soft couch, recounting how he had initially tested Wu Xueqin with a note.
Lin Youning’s eyes widened in surprise.
Gu Yifeng loved seeing her like this. To him, Sister Ning was always so composed, possessing a maturity beyond her actual age. Seeing her show such expressions brought him immense satisfaction.
"I fear the foreigners might invade, but the Holy Emperor hasn’t yet issued any decree despite the threat. When leaving the Capital, the Holy Emperor mentioned that if the foreigners invaded, they would only send a message to the Capital but didn’t mention resisting the enemy. I’ve been wondering if the Holy Emperor is reminiscing about old times."
"So if the foreigners invade, are we only to defend the city?" Lin Youning asked, hearing this for the first time.
She recalled meticulously, and her expression changed. She remembered that in her past life, the year after Brother Zong was born, her elder brother left, and the war between the two countries lasted for years. It wasn’t until the year before Brother Zong became the top scholar that her elder brother returned to the Capital.
After her elder brother returned, he was the only one who cared for Brother Zong, guiding him in his studies. In fact, he might have been the only one in the Marquis Mansion who truly cared for people.
"Why are you spacing out again?" Gu Yifeng held her chin, making her look at him, "What are you thinking about this time?"
"I was thinking about the constant snowfalls. Big Brother’s words were true about the matters of greenhouse agriculture; has it been reported to the court?" Lin Youning reflected on the past, "I’ve heard that after the snow disasters, there’s a severe drought. The foreigners rely on the grasslands to raise cattle and sheep. When the drought comes, the grass withers, and livestock won’t survive, making it even more difficult. Such issues might not stabilize in just one or two years. To survive, rather than waiting to starve, they might think it’s better to fight their way here. Big Brother should prepare in advance."
"So far, relations haven’t broken down. Why doesn’t Big Brother send someone to communicate with them, tell them to stockpile fodder? If they can hold on, it might buy them a year or two, giving us time to figure out another solution." Lin Youning tightly grabbed her brother’s hand. "Big Brother, you need to trust me."
Gu Yifeng looked at her, "Did you see it in a dream too?"
After a while, Lin Youning nodded. "Big Brother, even if I didn’t dream about it, if you think carefully and look through historical records, similar situations have occurred."
"Alright," Gu Yifeng nodded seriously. "But as you said, this approach might not work. It’s best to dig water cellars and store snow water to combat the drought and last until the next winter snowfall."
Lin Youning smiled with narrowed eyes, adding, "But given Big Brother’s status, if word got out, I’m afraid you might be accused of **betrayal. It’s better to find someone trustworthy to relay the message, preferably someone who can speak to that tribe’s leader. Otherwise, I’m afraid they won’t believe us."
"Don’t worry, I’ll arrange it," Gu Yifeng felt like Sister Ning was a mysterious land he couldn’t fully explore. The more he got to know her, the more surprising facets he discovered.
They talked the entire afternoon without realizing it until Hailan entered to light the lamps and asked what to prepare for the evening, only then did they realize how late it was.
After dinner, as they rested, their conversation dwindled. Lin Youning dared not meet Big Brother’s gaze, and as the room’s lights dimmed when night fell, she found herself in his embrace, surprised, she let out a soft cry, quickly stifled.
The heated breaths intertwined like the hot blood in their bodies. From the initial sting, Lin Youning eventually forgot everything. Exhausted to the point of her eyelids closing, she still felt her brother gently caressing her.
Lin Youning wanted to laugh but was too tired and drained of strength, so she fell into a deep sleep.
Gu Yifeng held her tightly, thinking how, after all these years, it was the first time he couldn’t control himself like an inexperienced youth. Even he hadn’t expected this side of himself.
Knowing well that he had tired Sister Ning tonight, aware that she was just starting to understand these matters, yet he still couldn’t hold back.
Early the next morning, Hailan noticed no movement from the main house and dared not let anyone disturb them. The courtyard’s servants moved quietly. Although Hailan didn’t know what transpired between the young lady and the Marquis, she could tell their feelings were now strong.
Understanding how awkwardly the young lady and the Marquis had interacted growing up as siblings, she saw now that they had broken through this relationship barrier.
Seeing no activity from the main house, Hailan returned to her resting place. She found Shanmoi deep in thought, approached her, and said, "It’s just been a few days, why are you still struggling? The young lady did it for your own good."
Shanmoi nodded, "I know I acted impulsively, but I feel I’ve wronged the young lady, and I dare not feel troubled any longer."
"It’s good that you’ve come around." Hailan shared what happened with the Marquis and the young lady, "Can you rest easy now? The Marquis treats the young lady well. Later, the Marquis visited Aunt Wu’s courtyard. Although he sent the servants away, one can guess he didn’t say anything kind. I also heard Li Si spoke up for you on the Marquis’s behalf."
Hailan tapped her head, "You lucky girl, are you content now?"
Shanmoi blushed, "Sister Hailan, don’t tease me. Li Si wasn’t being kind by speaking up for me. You know how he’s usually contrary to me."
Hailan just smiled silently, while Shanmoi felt an inexplicable unease.
When Lin Youning awoke, it was nearly noon, driven by hunger. She moved her sore body and saw that her brother was still there, feeling shy to meet his gaze as her brother spoke up.
"I’ve had congee prepared and your favorite salted vegetables. Hot water is ready for you to take a bath," Gu Yifeng spoke softly by her ear, "After lunch, let’s discuss in the study the matters we talked about yesterday in detail."
Seeing the young girl in his arms raise her head, no longer avoiding him, Gu Yifeng smiled warmly, the corners of his lips turning up.
He knew that as long as he mentioned business or gave her a task, this little girl would quickly forget her shyness.
