Chapter 40: Evaluation Test (Part 1)

Blood spouted from Tobi’s lifeless face as Maybel stuttered a bit, she was speechless... Rem continued his blows with fortified grit, enforcing his fists with soul energy.

"Stop," Maybel barely managed to hush out as Rem continued the brutality – the crimson glow surrounding his eyes gradually faded to reveal Rem’s gray eyes.

Tobi’s face had already been punched in and his soul was right there for the taking... making Rem smirk victoriously.

...

[Would you like to absorb ’Demon Shapeshifter’ Soul?]

[Yes / No]

...

Rem’s smirk widened as the Yes button was conveniently on Tobi’s smashed nose, he touched the button and the soul full of magic soared through the air – landing within his chest.

...

[’Demon Shapeshifter’ soul has been successfully absorbed]

[’Demon Shapeshifter Soldier’ can be summoned]

[You have gained Unique Skill: Shockwave Volley (C-grade)] 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

...

Rem sighed deflatedly as he got off Tobi, there was nothing more he could do at this point other than stare disappointedly at the screen. Instead of getting that Dungeon gateway summoning skill, he was gifted with something far off from what he wanted.

’It’s not everyday you get to see a skill that can create gateways to dungeons – it certainly made him a powerful opponent but considering that Tobi had not killed all of them yet, it seems like there is a cool-down for using the technique,’ Rem thought.

If Tobi really had enough reserves to pull it off, he could have at least made a portal twice and killed off the rest – but he didn’t and Rem noticed as he arrived, Tobi’s stamina had been greatly reduced... the apprentices and the instructors, they seemed to have put up a good fight but in the end, they all lost.

’A demonic soldier though... capable of shapeshifting,’ Rem thought while pursing his lips slightly, that surely opened up a bunch of new opportunities.

"You look badly bruised," Rem said while noting the Instructor’s condition, still there was nothing he could use to help and that was if he wanted to help anyway – he still had a back-up healing potion but Rem wasn’t willing enough to share it with her, besides her wounds were only minor compared to that of Cole who lay next to a stone pillar in a pool of blood but he was still alive.

Mika lay with her back against a stone pillar, her body not only riddled with wounds but an irregular flow of soul energy.

Instructor Maria was in even worse condition, Rem never really expected to see her like this... she looked like she had been roasted by a furnace, even part of her hair had turned gray as ash and her body was bloodied, but despite that, she only seemed to have fainted because of Exhaustion.

’What really happened here?’ Rem wondered as he witnessed all of these, recurring before his very eyes. It hadn’t only been a life-and-death battle, There was something more to it than what met the eye.

Before Rem could take any step forward, he sensed a powerful presence heading toward them – he was instantly on guard, there was always a chance that Tobi was not a loner and had some friends backing him up, greed instantly flashed in his eyes – not only was there a free ticket to getting more Shapeshifting demonic soldiers, one of them must also have that dungeon summoning ability although all hope for that was instantly wiped out as a Cavalier appeared in front of Rem and Maybel... his aura differed from anything Rem had ever felt before but he was sure that it was just a Cavalier, there was no magical energy radiating from his figure.

He took a glance at everyone’s condition and then to Tobi whose face was buried beneath the rubble, well what was left of his face anyway.

’His soul energy reserves and fluent movement – they suggest that he’s of B-rank or above,’ Rem thought silently while clenching his fists harder, even his movements couldn’t compare to that of this experienced Cavalier... He only finished Tobi off quickly because the demon had been exhausted by the actions of the Apprentices as well as the Instructors.

"You guys look pretty beat up," He said while sheathing his sword, the air of tension rippling apart as he appeared before Cole – Rem’s eyes could barely keep up with his speed. It was almost like he teleported to Cole...

’Is that a B-rank?!’

The Cavalier produced a small vial from his pocket and poured it into Cole’s waiting mouth, letting the fluid flow down the Apprentice’s throat. The effects were instant as the torn flesh instantly began regenerating and Cole’s broken muscles began their healing process.

He quickly distributed healing potions to everyone in the battlefield, everyone who was still alive while Rem watched emotionlessly.

’Those are a higher grade of Healing potions,’ Rem thought as he analyzed the container with the System.

...

[Item Name: Advanced Healing Potion]

[Item Grade: B-grade]

[Item Description: A Healing potion which has a higher healing rate than it’s predecessor – the healing Potion, the Advanced Healing potion can be used to heal a lot more fatal injuries]

[Purification Level: 3/5]

...

Rem stared at the information quietly – it had been quite a while since he had seen this screen but it still provided him with valuable information.

’If I could get my hands on these Advanced potions... Heh,’ Rem thought while rubbing his palms together – back-ups coupled with his new regeneration skill, He could be nearly invinicible.

But Rem was knocked out of his thoughts as a vial shot through the air at a blurring pace, landing in Maybel’s waiting palm. The Instructor opened the cork and drank down the contents, emptying the container quickly.

Maybel felt healing energy coursing through her veins, every visible wound on her body was instantly wrapped by steam... they had already began healing. She turned to Rem who stood with his arms in his pockets.

"It’s still coming to me, but you survived a C-rank Dungeon unscathed?" Maybel asked as the steam vanished – revealing her horrorful expression.

"No, had a couple of healing potions and just hid away," Rem replied, "The opening for the dungeon came after some hours –"

Rem wasn’t stupid, he wouldn’t really admit that he went into a C-rank Dungeon and defeated the boss alone besides he had already thought about this long and hard, no one could prove the fact that what he was saying was a lie – after all, he had been the one in the Dungeon, he could forge anything he wanted as the truth.

"But what about the blood?" Maybel asked while folding her arms, Rem’s expression didn’t falter... he didn’t want to give any distrusting vibes, he just brought his hand to the back of his head nervously and began stroking his hair.

"Uhm... I killed a few monsters, namely Goblins," Rem replied, "and besides I was only able to beat Tobi because of the fact that everyone had contributed their power to the battle, they had managed to weaken him to the point where I only needed to use a few moves to end him,"

Their conversation was suddenly interrupted as the Cavalier stood in front of them yet again.

"Young Master Rem, you have been summoned to the Light Mansion... our mayor wishes to have a word with you," The Cavalier said while bowing a bit.

’A summoning, huh?’
