The Monster Monarch System-Chapter 241: An Unexpected Request (Part 1)
Rem’s eyes snapped open.
He was awake now.
The dim glow of a campfire flickered against the cave walls, shadows dancing across the rough stone surface.
The scent of burning wood mixed with the faint metallic tang of dried blood.
For a moment, he simply lay there, his body still, his breathing shallow. His senses felt... different.
Sharpened.
They were honed to the point,
He could hear the soft crackling of the fire, the faint rustling of fabric as someone shifted nearby. He could even pick up the distant wind howling outside the cave, its echoes weaving through the night.
And then —
A presence.
Several, actually.
His gaze focused — and he saw them.
Mia. Luke. Kiara. The adventurers.
All of them sitting nearby, staring at him with expressions ranging from concern to sheer exhaustion.
"You’re awake."
Mia was the first to speak, her voice laced with relief. She had dark circles under her eyes, like she hadn’t slept in hours.
Luke let out a loud sigh, leaning back against the cave wall. "Took you long enough," he muttered. But his voice lacked its usual sharpness.
Kiara didn’t say anything at first. She just watched him, her lips pressed into a thin line. Her sharp blue eyes searched his face — looking for something. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
Rem exhaled deeply, slowly pushing himself up.
That was when he noticed it.
His wrist.
Wrapped in cloth — torn from his own cloak. The fabric was rough, hastily tied. Someone must have bandaged him while he was out.
His fingers flexed, testing his grip. His body... felt normal. There was no lingering pain, no sign of weakness.
But something was different.
The energy inside him — it hadn’t settled.
It throbbed beneath his skin, whispering, curling like an unseen force that hadn’t existed before. His senses were sharper, his instincts quicker.
He could feel it.
All of it.
"You scared the hell out of us."
Luke’s voice pulled him from his thoughts.
"You were lying there like a corpse," Luke continued, crossing his arms. "And after everything that happened out there, we thought — "
He cut himself off, shaking his head. "Doesn’t matter. You’re fine now."
Rem studied their faces. They had been worried.
Even the adventurers, people who barely knew him, looked... relieved.
It was a strange feeling.
He wasn’t used to this.
People caring.
For a long time, it had always been just him, fighting, surviving, moving forward without a second thought. And yet, here they were.
Still watching. Still waiting.
"How long was I out?" Rem asked, his voice coming out rougher than expected.
"Almost a whole day," Kiara answered, her arms resting on her knees. "We carried you back after we found you lying outside the dungeon."
Rem’s brows furrowed slightly. A whole day.
His mind flickered back to the last thing he remembered —
The dungeon breaking apart. The overwhelming surge of energy.
And then — nothing.
Just darkness.
He glanced at his hands, clenching them into fists.
What exactly had happened to him?
Mia spoke up next. "You don’t remember anything, do you?"
Rem hesitated. "I remember entering the dungeon. I remember fighting." His gaze darkened. It was a very powerful monster and I barely survived our encounter,"
Luke shivered slightly. "That thing... was it huge?"
Rem shook his head. "More like constantly annoying,"
He knew that much. But after that? His memory blurred.
There was a flash of something — an image of a cocoon, the System’s message hovering in his mind. The feeling of energy sinking into him, crawling through his veins.
And then pain.
He closed his eyes for a brief second.
He could still feel it inside him. The power. The adaptation.
He had absorbed it.
And that meant —
He had changed.
Kiara was watching him carefully, as if she could sense something was off.
"What happened in there?" she finally asked.
Rem glanced at her, then at the others.
They were waiting for an answer.
But he wasn’t sure if he should tell them everything.
That he had absorbed the soul of the adaptation nightmare.
That something inside him had shifted.
That he wasn’t the same anymore.
Instead, he kept it simple.
"The dungeon was... different," he said. "It wasn’t like a normal one. It was corrupted, mutated. Stronger than anything I’ve seen before."
Mia frowned. "That explains why the monsters outside were acting so strangely."
Rem nodded. "The corruption was spreading. It was only a matter of time before it reached further." He flexed his fingers again. "I stopped it."
Kiara raised an eyebrow. "And that’s it?"
Rem met her gaze evenly. "That’s it."
A lie.
Half-truth.
But they didn’t need to know everything.
Not yet.
The fire crackled between them, the only sound for a moment.
Then, Luke stretched his arms with a groan. "Well, whatever. You’re alive, the corruption is gone, and we’re not dead. That’s all that matters, right?"
Mia shot him a tired look. "You’re horrible at emotional moments."
Luke grinned. "That’s why you’re here."
She rolled her eyes but didn’t argue.
Rem exhaled, finally pushing himself fully to his feet.
His legs were steady, his balance perfect. He glanced around the cave, taking in the others — bruised, exhausted, but alive.
His gaze flickered back toward the entrance, where the forest lay beyond.
There was still so much to do.
But for now —
They had survived.
That was enough.
#####
The cave was silent except for the distant crackling of dying embers.
The others were deep in sleep, their exhaustion finally catching up to them after the long battle and their journey through the cursed forest.
Luke was sprawled on his back, his arms crossed over his chest. Kiara rested against the cave wall, her breathing slow and steady.
Mia was curled up near the fire, clutching her cloak tightly for warmth.
Rem, however, remained awake.
His body felt fine — stronger, even — but his mind wasn’t at ease. Something within him had changed after absorbing Asrahoth’s soul.
It wasn’t just his power; it was deeper than that. He could feel his body adjusting, shifting in ways he didn’t fully understand yet.
He exhaled through his nose, sitting cross-legged near the cave entrance, watching the quiet darkness of the forest beyond.
Then — movement.
A soft shuffle of boots against stone.
Rem didn’t react immediately, but his senses sharpened. A figure approached cautiously, stopping just a few feet away. One of the adventurers.
