Chapter 237: The Monster That Adapts

The massive doors swung open without Rem touching them. A chill ran down his spine — not from fear, but from the unsettling stillness that awaited him beyond.

By this time he would have been attacked by a guardian or something, which told him that what lay ahead wasn’t a guardian by any means.

He stepped inside.

With every Guardian he had slain, the dungeon’s corruption had faded. The once-seething lava had dried, leaving behind cracked obsidian and ghostly steam that slithered along the floor.

The unstable pillars had crumbled completely, their ancient weight collapsing in on itself.

The air, once suffocating with heat and malevolent energy, had turned bitterly cold.

Yet, none of that concerned Rem.

What did concern him was the unnatural stillness.

His boots barely made a sound as he walked deeper into the Boss Room.

The space was enormous — far too large for a dungeon of this grade.

Jagged stone formations jutted from the ground like the teeth of some long-dead titan, and the only source of light came from the faintly glowing veins of blue energy pulsing along the walls.

But then —

He stopped.

A chill that had nothing to do with the cold ran through him.

His instincts screamed — a visceral warning that sent his body tensing on its own. Like his body was warning him that he could die if he moved any further... and it was strange.

At the very center of the chamber, where the Boss should have been, there was no throne, no altar, no monstrous figure waiting for him with bared fangs or weapons drawn.

Instead, there was a cocoon.

It was massive, nearly as tall as he was, its outer shell made of intertwining black and gold chitin.

Faint cracks ran along its surface, pulsing with a deep, ominous red light — like something was alive inside.

Rem narrowed his eyes.

The System pinged.

Warning: Dungeon Boss Awakening...

His fingers curled around the handle of his sword.

And then —

CRACK.

A jagged split formed down the center of the cocoon. A low, guttural hum filled the chamber, resonating in his bones like the echo of a long-forgotten deity.

A wave of energy exploded outward.

It blasted through the chamber, sending dust and debris flying.

Rem’s cloak flared behind him, his black hair whipped back from the sheer force of it.

The entire dungeon trembled, as if reality itself had been disturbed by whatever was inside.

Then —

It emerged.

A towering figure stepped from the cocoon’s remains, its body unfolding like a nightmare given form.

Rem’s eyes narrowed as he took in the creature’s form.

It was about six feet tall, its body a blend of beast and warrior.

Broad, powerful shoulders gave way to muscular arms, one ending in razor-sharp claws while the other held a long blackened blade fused directly to its limb.

Its legs were built for speed, shaped like a predatory feline’s, ending in hooked talons that scraped against the stone.

But its head was what unsettled him the most.

A golden crown-like structure jutted from its forehead, with four curved horns extending backward.

Its face was obscured by a half-formed mask of bone and blackened metal, hiding everything except for a single, glowing red eye that gleamed with intelligence.

Rem exhaled sharply.

System Alert: Boss Identified

[NAME: MUTATED GUARDIAN, ASRAHOTH]

[TITLE: THE ADAPTIVE NIGHTMARE]

[ABILITY: ADAPTATION]

Rem’s jaw clenched.

"Adaptation...?" he muttered.

The System immediately provided an explanation.

Asrahoth possesses the unique ability to adapt to any attack it survives. The longer the battle continues, the stronger it becomes.

Rem’s grip tightened on his sword.

"Well," he muttered. "That’s surely a pain in the ass."

Asrahoth lifted its blade-arm, pointing it directly at Rem.

Then —

It moved.

Fast.

Very Fast.

Rem barely had time to react before the monster was upon him, its clawed hand swiping at his throat.

He leaned back, narrowly avoiding the slash as he pivoted, twisting his body to avoid the follow-up attack from the blade-arm.

CLANG!

His sword met steel, sparks flying from the impact. The force behind the strike sent a shockwave through his arms, forcing him to slide backward across the ground.

He balanced himself quickly though, he couldn’t afford to be caught lacking especially against a monster that could adapt.

Rem exhaled.

"Fast and strong," he muttered, rolling his shoulders. "Let’s see how long you can keep up."

The monster lunged again.

This time, Rem met it head-on.

Their weapons clashed repeatedly, the sounds of metal against metal echoing through the chamber.

Asrahoth fought with an unorthodox, animalistic style, blending sheer brute force with razor-sharp precision.Just like a seasoned warrior would do, one that had faced in thousands of battles...

Every movement was calculated, every attack an attempt to corner him.

But Rem wasn’t so easily cornered.

He moved like water, slipping between the monster’s attacks, retaliating with sharp, decisive strikes. He went for its legs first, slashing at the tendons — testing its regeneration.

A deep gash formed across Asrahoth’s thigh —

Only for the wound to close almost instantly.

Rem’s eyes narrowed.

He pivoted and slammed his knee into the monster’s chest, sending it skidding backward. Instead of charging again, he observed.

The System’s words rang in his head.

The longer the battle continues, the stronger it becomes.

Tch.

That meant —

A battle of attrition wasn’t an option.

If he dragged this out, he’d lose.

He needed to end this quickly.

Before Asrahoth could evolve any further.

The monster’s red eye gleamed, and something about its stance shifted. Rem felt it instantly — a subtle change in its movements, the way it was adjusting to his speed, his attacks. It was already adapting to his fighting style, finding the perfect way to neutralize him.

It was learning.

Rem exhaled sharply, rolling his shoulders.

"Alright," he muttered. "Let’s see how much you can adapt — before I break you."

Asrahoth let out a low, guttural growl — and the two rushed at each other, clashing and sending a shockwave across the entire Boss room.
