Chapter 230: Irregular Behavior

The forest was quiet, the kind of silence that felt alive with tension.

The trees were tall and gnarled, their thick canopies casting the ground in perpetual shadow. Only slivers of sunlight managed to pierce through, dancing faintly on the undergrowth.

Rem led the way, his sharp gaze scanning the path ahead for any threats. Luke and Kiara followed close behind, their steps soft and cautious.

"Do you think we’ll find another dungeon out here?" Luke asked, his tone light but edged with curiosity.

"Dungeons don’t pop up everywhere," Rem replied, glancing back at him. "But don’t let your guard down. This forest has its own dangers."

Kiara adjusted the grip on her dagger, her expression wary. "We’ve already taken down a few monsters. Shouldn’t that have scared the rest off?"

Rem smirked faintly. "Monsters don’t scare easily. They’re territorial. If they’re not attacking us, it’s because they’re watching and waiting for the right moment."

Luke tensed slightly at the thought, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword.

True to Rem’s warning, it wasn’t long before another group of monsters emerged. Four wolf-like creatures padded out from the shadows, their glowing red eyes locked onto the trio.

Their fur bristled, and low growls rumbled from their throats as they circled their prey.

"Kiara, take the one on the left. Luke, the two on the right. I’ll handle the last one," Rem said calmly, drawing his sword with a smooth motion.

The wolves pounced, their powerful limbs propelling them forward with terrifying speed.

Luke darted to the side, soul energy surging around him as he parried a leaping wolf’s claws.

His sword slashed in a clean arc, catching the beast midair and sending it crashing to the ground. The second wolf lunged at him, but he was ready, pivoting and driving his blade into its side.

Kiara was a blur of motion as she weaved around her opponent. The wolf snapped its jaws at her, but she was too fast, her dagger finding its mark repeatedly.

With a final strike to its throat, the creature crumpled.

Rem moved with practiced precision, sidestepping the last wolf’s charge before delivering a devastating strike to its neck. The beast barely had time to react before it collapsed, lifeless.

"Not bad," Rem said, sheathing his sword.

Luke wiped the sweat from his brow, a grin spreading across his face. "We’re getting better at this."

Kiara nodded, though her expression remained serious. "Still, it feels like there are more monsters than usual. Is that normal?"

"Sometimes," Rem replied. "It could mean something’s stirring deeper in the forest. Let’s keep moving."

The forest grew denser as they pressed onward, the air cooler and heavier. The trio moved in silence, their senses heightened for any sign of danger.

After some time, they heard voices up ahead.

Rem signaled for Luke and Kiara to stop, his hand raised in a silent command. They crouched behind a thick bush, peering through the leaves.

A group of adventurers stood in a small clearing, their expressions tense and uncertain. There were five of them: two men armed with swords, a woman clutching a staff, and two others who appeared to be archers.

Their armor was scuffed, and their clothes were torn in places, as if they’d been wandering the forest for some time.

"They look lost," Kiara whispered.

"Or bait," Rem replied quietly, his eyes narrowing.

Luke frowned. "Bait? You think they’re trying to lure us into a trap?"

"It’s possible," Rem said. "But they also look genuinely exhausted. Either way, we’ll approach cautiously."

He stepped out of the bushes, his hand resting lightly on the hilt of his sword. Luke and Kiara followed close behind, their weapons at the ready.

The adventurers turned at the sound of their approach, their postures stiffening.

"Who goes there?" one of the swordsmen called out, his grip tightening on his weapon.

"We’re just passing through," Rem replied evenly. "You look like you could use some help."

The swordsman hesitated, his eyes scanning the trio. "We... got separated from our main group. We’ve been wandering for hours, and this forest is a maze."

The woman with the staff stepped forward, her expression weary. "Do you know the way out? We’re running low on supplies, and some of us are injured."

Rem studied them carefully, his gaze flicking over their tired faces and battered gear. They didn’t seem like a threat, but he remained cautious.

"We’re heading toward the eastern edge of the forest," he said. "If you want to come with us, stay close and don’t slow us down."

The group exchanged relieved glances before nodding.

"Thank you," the staff-wielder said. "My name’s Lila. This is Toren, Markus, Elia, and Dane."

Rem gave a curt nod. "Rem. These are Luke and Kiara."

As they moved through the forest, the adventurers explained their situation. They had been part of a larger expedition meant to clear out a dungeon at the northern edge of the woods.

Things had gone wrong when they were ambushed by monsters, and the group was forced to scatter.

"We were lucky to get out alive," Toren said grimly. "But we’ve been wandering ever since, and the monsters just keep coming."

"They’ve been unusually aggressive," Lila added. "It’s like something’s riling them up."

Rem didn’t respond immediately, his mind turning over the information. It aligned with what they had encountered so far, but it didn’t explain why the forest seemed so much more dangerous than usual.

They continued in uneasy silence, the tension thick in the air. Luke stayed close to Kiara, his protective instincts kicking in now that there were strangers among them.

"Do you trust them?" Kiara whispered to him.

Luke shook his head. "Not completely. But if they’re lying, Rem will catch on."

As if sensing their conversation, Rem glanced back at them, his expression unreadable. "Stay focused," he said. "We’re not out of the woods yet."

No sooner had he spoken than a low growl rumbled through the air.

The group froze as more monsters emerged from the shadows — twice as many as before.

"Get ready," Rem said, drawing his sword.

The adventurers joined the fray, their weapons flashing as they fought alongside Rem, Luke, and Kiara. The battle was chaotic, the monsters relentless, but the group held their ground.

For the first time, Luke and Kiara fought alongside others, their movements guided by Rem’s sharp commands. The adventurers were skilled, but it was clear they were worn down.

"Luke, cover Dane! Kiara, back me up on the left!" Rem barked, his blade cutting through another monster.

Despite the chaos, they managed to fend off the attackers. When the last monster fell, the clearing was littered with bodies, and the group was left catching their breath.

"Is it always like this in this forest?" Toren asked, his voice shaky.

"No," Rem said, wiping his blade clean. "Something’s stirring. And I have a feeling this isn’t the last of it."
