Chapter 214: Monsters From The Creek

Rem sneezed, his eyes narrowing as a strange thought crossed his mind. "I wonder if someone’s talking about me."

His black hair ruffled in the gentle evening breeze, and his crimson eyes glowed faintly in the fading light.

He stared out at the creek that flowed quietly before him, its surface shimmering with the colors of the setting sun.

Nearby, the twins were struggling to set up the tent.

Kiara was holding the poles steady while Luke fumbled with the instructions, clearly more interested in teasing his sister than getting anything done right.

Rem couldn’t help but chuckle as he watched them, though a sinking feeling crept up on him.

The night was falling quickly, and he realized with a start that he had completely forgotten to stock up on supplies before rushing out of town.

They were low on food — dangerously low — and there was no way he could afford to go back now. Not with the Representatives likely already searching for him in the city.

With a sigh, he muttered to himself, "I’ll just check the Inventory."

He tapped a few symbols into the air, bringing up the familiar system interface.

A holographic screen flickered into view before him, displaying a long list of items. His fingers scrolled through the selections until he spotted something useful: a stash of Hellhound meat from previous hunts.

It wasn’t the best, but it would do.

Without hesitation, he dragged a few large pieces of the raw meat into reality and set them down on the ground, then pulled out a large, flat pan.

Soon, The sizzling sound of the meat hitting the hot surface filled the air as he began cooking with a little bit of spare oil.

His attention shifted momentarily as he caught sight of Luke, who had somehow managed to tie himself to one of the tent poles. The sight was absurd — Luke was tangled up in the ropes, his face flushed with frustration. Rem let out a laugh, unable to help himself.

"Come on, Master, quit laughing and help me out of here," Luke grumbled, his eyes narrowing in annoyance.

Rem walked over with a grin. "How’d you even get stuck like that?"

Luke groaned. "I don’t even know. One minute I was helping Kiara with the poles, and the next — well, this." His voice trailed off in defeat.

Kiara, sitting a few feet away, giggled softly. She leaned back against Rem’s side, clearly finding the situation just as amusing, though she said nothing.

Rem knelt down to untangle the ropes, the laughter still lingering in the air between them.

Once Luke was free, Rem went back to preparing the meat and soon the three of them sat down to eat.

The fire crackled softly as the first stars began to twinkle in the darkening sky.

Luke took a tentative bite of the meat and paused, chewing thoughtfully. "I’ve never eaten anything like this before," he muttered, his eyebrows lifting in surprise. "But it tastes amazing."

Rem raised an eyebrow. "Hellhound meat isn’t exactly gourmet, but it’s packed with energy. It’ll keep you going."

Luke smiled between bites, his enthusiasm growing. "It’s better than anything I’ve ever had back in the town. Seriously."

He took another large bite, savoring the flavor, before letting out a loud, satisfied burp.

Kiara, who had been silently eating her portion beside them, leaned her head against Rem’s shoulder as she finished her meal.

There was something calming about the warmth of his presence, even though the weight of their situation was never far from her thoughts.

She hadn’t said much, but the quiet comfort of the moment was enough for now.

"So, Master," Luke asked between mouthfuls, looking up at Rem with curiosity, "where are we going next? You didn’t just bring us out here to sleep in the wild, did you?"

Rem’s lips twitched into a small smile. "Hardly. We’re heading to the city. Once we get there, I’ll get you both new gear and some proper clothes. But before that, we’re training — intensively. You’re both getting stronger, but you’ve got a long way to go."

Luke’s face lit up at the mention of training. "Oh, I see! So, we’re not just out here to survive the wilderness?" He reached for another piece of meat, his excitement palpable.

"No," Rem said, a little more seriously. "We’re not. The wilds are dangerous, and you need to be ready for anything. It’s going to be tough, but it’s the only way to prepare for what’s coming."

Luke nodded, his mouth full of food. He chewed thoughtfully, then swallowed with a small grunt of satisfaction. "Got it."

Meanwhile, Kiara remained silent, her gaze fixed on the night sky, though her thoughts seemed distant.

It was clear that despite her quiet demeanor, she was processing everything that had happened. The journey they were on wasn’t just about surviving — it was about something bigger, something Rem had yet to fully explain.

Just as Rem finished his meal, a low rumble vibrated through the ground, cutting through the otherwise peaceful evening.

The sound was faint at first, but it quickly grew louder.

The creek in front of them rippled as if something was stirring beneath its surface.

"Did you feel that?" Kiara whispered, her body tense as she sat up straighter, her eyes scanning the water.

Before anyone could react, the creek exploded. Water shot up in a towering wave, crashing toward them.

The twins jumped to their feet, and Rem instinctively raised his hand. A barrier of shimmering soul energy materialized in front of them, the water slamming into it with a deafening splash, but it was deflected harmlessly to either side.

"Damn," Rem muttered under his breath, his crimson eyes glowing faintly as he studied the source of the disturbance.

The water had settled quickly, but the sudden burst had left the ground damp and glistening. Something — or someone — was out there.

"Get ready," he said quietly, his expression serious. "We might not be alone out here."

Ripples spread across the creek again, a warning of something stirring beneath the surface.

Rem’s sharp eyes caught the first signs — green scales glistening as a massive creature emerged from the water.

Its body was armored, its skin thick and hard like plate mail, making it look like something out of a nightmare.

Rem’s gaze flicked to the water, and he realized this battle was going to be harder than he’d anticipated.

And that was just the beginning. More shapes emerged, rising from the creek in slow, deliberate movements.

The monsters soon stood on solid ground, towering over Rem and the twins. Their crimson eyes glowed with malice, their soul energy pulsing like a dark rhythm.

Rem could sense more of them lurking beneath the surface — these were only the first wave, a tip of the iceberg in a way.

A growl broke the silence, and before Rem could react, one of the monsters lunged forward, faster than he expected for its size and armored form.

It reached him in an instant, its massive fist swinging toward his head with terrifying force.

Without hesitation, Rem raised his hand and caught the blow mid-air, his arm barely moving despite the weight of the punch.

The monster roared in frustration, trying to bring its other fist down on Rem’s head, but he was already there, grabbing its second punch before it could land.

With a slight smirk on his face, he pressed both fists down, crushing them in his grip until the monster let out a strangled cry.

"You’re slow," Rem muttered under his breath, his voice a calm contrast to the chaos unfolding. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

With a swift motion, he reeled back his fist and slammed it into the monster’s chest. His soul energy flared around his arm, crackling like lightning as it connected.

The force of the punch shattered the monster’s insides, and it crumpled to the ground, lifeless.

Rem took a breath, his gaze flicking over the twins. They had taken a few steps back, wide-eyed, watching the scene unfold.

The night air was thick with the scent of danger, and Rem’s blood hummed with the thrill of the fight.

He wiped the blood from his fist and turned to the kids, his expression serious.

"Watch," he said, his voice low but steady. "This is the kind of strength I want you to have."

His words hung in the air, but there was no time to dwell on them. As if in response to his challenge, another monster charged forward, its crimson eyes burning with fury. Rem raised his hand, already prepared for the next strike.
