Chapter 208: The Changing Ruins (Part 11)

[Days Later]

Rem took in a deep breath as he punched the ground open, revealing a glimmering crystal – the Monster Monarch system scanned it.

’Another piece of diamond,’ Rem thought, ’This was really a gold-mine,’

It was completely understandable since Ember town as well as the other towns had brought their forces together to fight for this place, it must be worth the trouble.

’Once news gets out that this happened, there’ll be a lot of traffic,’ Rem thought, ’From both Orion and Onio, I’ll need to leave with the twins and start making sure their training goes as planned,’

With him gone and the both of them having awakened soul energy, Rem expected them to slack a bit with their training... it was only normal, your mentor wasn’t there to watch what you were doing and this was why he wanted to increase the training they would have to undergo two-fold, crafting them into powerful warriors that would be able to charge into a fight head-on without any fear.

Rem tucked it in his inventory, the party had left some days ago but he had told them he would be staying behind to see if there were any monsters left... and so far, it happened just like he thought it would.

In the final moments of the Boss, in a bid to surpass him – it had brought all the soul energy present within the dungeon, including taken the souls of Monsters roaming around... there was a reason they were far much stronger than their regular counterparts and it was because they were the partially mutated versions of the Army that the Monster had summoned.

This was the reason why they were stronger and each of them had been fueled by soul energy, so once it had left, they had nothing else to do but to fall to being the lifeless corpses that they once were...

Rem decided to bide his time, getting some of the valuable resources that could be found within the Ruins as it would soon be full of people coming to get them... he wouldn’t be going dungeon raiding for a long time after this and the only route to the city was a long one which took several weeks to travel by foot.

Rem looked up, his eyes flashing in a clear crimson as he stared at the ceiling – there were no monsters which meant this place could go back to being a mine as long as there were enough people here.

#####

Rem exited the Changing Ruins, wondering what the name would be changed to.

’Mines of Wonder?’ Rem wondered but he suddenly felt ten soul energy signatures up ahead, showing no sign of hostility. He cautiously approached the people coming up to him and seeing that they were Raiders intrigued him.

"It’s him, the Solo Raider," One of them muttered in a hushed whisper, wanting her friends to keep their composure and they understood.

Rem heard their whisper and gave a little sigh of relief, he wanted to get out of Ember town before Orion started getting here, there was bound to be a bounty on his head after all of the killing he did before leaving – he really left a dent in their forces.

The Raiders cleared way for him to pass and he did but he stopped shortly after.

"Hey, can I ask a question?" Rem asked and the Cavaliers stopped in their tracks, a Cavalier turned around and looked at him.

"Has anything happened in Ember town as of late?" Rem asked.

"No," The Cavalier said, "It’s just that the news of the ruins being cleared has spread all over the town and under the Mayor’s orders, a few raiders will come here to try and mine, we need to see if it’s still able to contribute,"

The Ruins had been under siege for years so it was only natural for it to be checked whether there were still minerals available for mining. Rem had checked of course but it wouldn’t do any good to tell them.

"Sure, I’ll leave you to your work," Rem said and began sprinting, leaving a lot of dust in their wake.

#####

It took him a lesser amount of time to reach Ember town again and once he did, he noticed the vibrancy in the air – the whole air of the town had changed.

It looked a whole lot livelier than before and Rem could see constructs in the distance, the more he walked in, the more he could see that the town had changed.

The people looked a lot more happier than before, and even his presence didn’t disturb them. It felt weird to him.

He went to the Town hall and entered the Mayor’s office without any interruptions.

"Ah Rem, welcome," The mayor said, pulling his tie down a bit. The air was a bit hot and sweat trickled down his face, "It’s been a while since I saw you,"

"Same here," Rem said while setting down on the chair he had sat on before, "I stayed behind to clear the remaining monsters that were there, and the place still has some minerals in it – it’ll be perfect,"

The mayor gave a small nod and pulled out a pouch from his pocket.

"This is your remaining payment," The mayor said, "Cecilia and the others recounted their experience with you and to say you contributed a lot to defeating the monster is enough to give you much more,"

He had requested Cecilia and the others to refrain from telling anyone about what had happened – the fake story was what was trending now, that he had made a considerable assistance in the fight and that was the way Rem liked it.

He threw it at Rem and the Cavalier caught it, the jiggling of the coins sounded from within the pouch and Rem tucked it in.

"I noticed that you’ve started rebuilding," Rem said, "Why is that?"

"Well the news has reached the other towns as well and they’re going to be coming here soon," The Mayor said, "Orion will soon be here so we have to look good and presentable,"

The Changing Ruins was what had brought together the towns to charge a unified assault, The "Changing Raid"... and now that it was finally freed from the clutches of the monster, the heroes would need to be given credit.

"I’ll be leaving the town today," Rem told the Mayor and the man’s eyes widened.

"You won’t even stay for the buffet? Or meeting the other towns?" The Mayor asked.

"I won’t," Rem said, "I have places to go, but I’m thankful that I was able to go to the Changing Ruins,"

The Mayor nodded; there wasn’t any way he could force Rem to stay where he didn’t want to stay and he knew it as well.

Rem left the Town hall with a small frown on his face, he needed to move quickly – the names of the people that cleared the Changing Ruins would be told to the other towns and his identity would be revealed, he needed to be out of the town when that happened.

#####

The twins sparred in the backyard, their fists clad in soul energy. Even after Rem had left, they had kept up their training.

Luke gritted his teeth as his fist collided with Kiara’s, their respective soul energies exploding outwards as they fought in a standstill – determined to push the other one away.

"Your punches have grown stronger," Luke commented but Kiara didn’t falter, she kept channeling soul energy into her fist.

Upon awakening her soul energy, she had learned that while her output for soul energy was high – her brother was something else entirely... he could control the intensity of his soul energy at will, increasing the volatility within seconds. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

Kiara pushed back and her crimson hair flailed in the air as she landed quickly, her blue eyes looked forward and she leaned to the right just in time to avoid a punch to the face.

Luke wasn’t taking it easy on her, he was the one with superior strength and experience here after having battled monsters.

Kiara’s eyes flashed as soul energy gathered around her feet, she immediately went for a swift tackle but Luke read it like an open book and leapt over it.

Rem observed the spar from the distance, to say he wasn’t surprised was an understatement – he had expected them to take a break but they had done the opposite and instead focused on their training a lot. He could see the improvements that they were making, even without his help and it solidified his idea that his choice to pick them was good.

They had a lot of potential and that much he couldn’t deny, especially due to the fact that Luke had already gotten a skill.
