Chapter 203: Friends

Rem spat on the ground, the boy hated the conduct of the guards – he lay crumpled on the ground next to one of the guard stations, his body was riddled with wounds and his bones creaked.

"Attempted theft," A guard said while looming over Rem, clad in his Onio town guard department uniform, "As a small kid, you tried something as dangerous as that,"

*Stomp*

The guard stomped on Rem’s stomach, a hoarse scream escaping the throat of the boy as the shoes the guard wore slammed at his insides. The guard retracted his foot shortly after and placed it on the ground once again.

"Maybe you thought that the guards would have some mercy on you," The guard said with a mocking smile, "It doesn’t matter what you think because a crime is a crime, and everyone is treated equally under the law,"

*Stomp*

The guard stomped once again but this time Rem didn’t budge, he didn’t have the energy to do so and the guard just kept stomping... with each stomp, Rem felt less pain as he concentrated the bubbling energy into his stomach, not enough to let the guard realize but enough to prevent him from sustaining any serious injuries, it was made painfully clear that the guards didn’t prioritize his wellbeing.

Seeing that he would not get anything from Rem, he kicked the boy aside and began strutting into the station.

"I’ll go get the whip for your sorry ass," He said, his voice showing a bit of humanity for once. And then Rem heard the door shut.

Silence was the only thing that pervaded, Rem tried to pull himself to his feet but he couldn’t – it had been two years since his Dad died and he as well as his mom had been trying to make ends meet with the little they could manage.

Rem couldn’t ally himself with anyone from the Casino since it would be giving away his unique mastery over such energy at a young age and it wouldn’t be something he wanted for himself, to be used as a pawn under someone else.

’I need to get back up on my feet,’ Rem thought but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t pull himself up from the ground. His throat was hoarse from screaming, his body oozing with wounds and his gray eyes looking up blood-shot.

"This isn’t good," Rem heard a feminine voice say as he felt someone sit next to him, he didn’t recognize this voice, "Did the guards do this to you?’

"Y-yes," Rem barely answered with a whisper, but the girl next to him heard him and sighed.

"They’re just a lot of corrupt bastards," The girl said and although Rem hadn’t seen her face, he could hear the emotion within her voice – she hated the guards as much as he did, "Onio town would be better off without them,"

The girl reached into her pocket and brought out a small pill before shoving it into Rem’s mouth. Rem choked on the pill for a bit but as he completely swallowed it, he felt the injuries in his body immediately heal – the wounds mended easily and the moisture in his throat returned.

Rem sat up shortly after but moved away as soon as he saw what had healed him – A Beastkin, he stopped moving because it looked nothing like Yokama, the towering Beastkin that had brought about the destruction of his family... She had spiky silver hair and pristine blue eyes, from a glance, Rem could see that she belonged to nobility... the clothes that she donned was far more fabulous than his and the two wolf-ears on her head were unmistakable.

Seeing his reaction, the girl raised her hand and ran it through her hair nervously.

"Never seen one of my kind before?" She asked with obvious curiosity, she wanted to know what brought about that reaction from him... His eyes looked complicated as they roamed over her, like they peered through her soul.

Rem’s face relaxed and a small smile spread across his lips.

"Thank you for healing me," Rem said, "I appreciate it but you shouldn’t have done that,"

"Why?" The girl asked.

"The guards have me detained here," Rem said, "It’s been a week now and my mom’s been worried sick, plus I can’t leave with this,"

A chain was wrapped around his feet, bounding them together, the girl’s brows furrowed upon seeing that.

"If the chains were off, would you have escaped?" She asked.

"Yes," Rem said with a sigh, "I’d long been gone,"

The girl grabbed at the chains and yanked at them, they responded to the force they were being pulled at and shattered immediately – breaking Rem free from the binding, it had been tied so tight that he would have to slither if he even wanted to move.

Rem’s mouth hung open, he was still surprised. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"My name’s Cecilia," The girl said with a bright smile, "What’s yours?"

"I’m Rem," Rem said.

"Let’s be friends next time we meet," Cecilia said while standing up, "You should be escaping now, you know,"

"But what about you?" Rem asked, feeling a bit hesitant to leave someone that had just saved him behind.

"Me, I’ll lie to them and make sure that they don’t find you," Cecilia said.

"Why?" Rem asked, he couldn’t understand why she would go out of her way to help him – he didn’t have anything to offer.

"We’re friends silly," Cecilia said, "Now go,"

Rem didn’t need any more prompting, he ran away – the station was surrounded by a small fence, it would be nigh-impossible for someone like Rem to be able to jump over it but with soul energy... it became easy.

Rem leapt over the fence easily and escaped into the horizon while the doors of the station opened, the guard from earlier had come out with a whip and a malevolent smile on his face but it froze as soon as he saw the Silver-haired Beastkin.

"Miss Cecilia," He said, his voice vibrating with respect for the little girl, "Did you let the prisoner go?"

"Yes," Cecilia said, standing her ground... there was another reason for her confidence though, her mother was a Guard Commander.
