Chapter 177: An Eye For An Eye (Part 2)

"Daddy," Rem’s cute voice sounded as he reached the table where the gamble had taken place, "I want to go home and meet Mommy,"

Yokama turned to Rem, he noticed the similarities between the both of them and his eyes calmed – He couldn’t blame Rem, the casino wasn’t a place for kids.

’Not like I can’t get the money back,’ Yokama thought as he looked at Greg who was nervously laughing.

"Ah please excuse me," Greg said, "We could play again next time,"

"I’ll take you up on that, and I’ll win," Yokama replied with a nod as he watched Greg pack up the chips, heading to the Counter to change them into coins – Rem had also assisted him as well since the pile of chips were plentiful.

"I know what that look in your eyes mean," The Old man said, "And I don’t think you should do it, the city prohibits those sort of acts,"

"The city won’t remember him then," Yokama said and Rem’s ears perked up, he had heard everything that the man had said despite the distance between them.

Soul energy was an energy that existed in every human being, with training, a human would be able to draw out their soul energy and use it to enhance their physical bodies and Rem who hadn’t been given any sort of training had a knack for it.

He was able to enhance his sight, hearing, and other aspects of his body with soul energy although he couldn’t control it too well because of his lack of experience – Greg of course took advantage of this talent to win the gambling matches. An experienced Cavalier like Yokama would have been able to sense Rem’s soul energy if he had used it for a long period of time but he only activated it for seconds... 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

Father and son ran down the streets of Onio, their gray eyes filled with determination. They couldn’t see their pursuer but they didn’t care as well, they knew they were in danger.

"It’s a B-grade Cavalier," Greg said, "But even high grades have their limits, we’ll go through every alley in the town before Curfew, he surely won’t be able to follow us then,"

Rem nodded, eager to follow his Father’s commands – this wasn’t the first time they had been targeted after all, The Casino was a safe place since nobody wanted to lose their passes to gamble but outside the casino was a warzone, people targeted each other, sometimes people killed each other just because of the most valuable thing in the world...

Money.

The streets were dark and quiet, there weren’t people lounging outside – everywhere was eerily silent, even the people from the slums were nowhere to be found.

’Shit, it’s Curfew already,’ Greg realized.

Rem turned around, all he could see was darkness – but in the darkness, he could feel something... something bad... something dangerous coming for his Father.

"Dad, get down," Rem said and Greg did as he was told, just as he bent over, a dagger shot past where his head had been and soon collided with the ground, the clatter of steel could be heard.

"Good instincts," Yokama said, his voice audible to the both of them – they turned to him and found him standing a few meters away from them, leaning against a building with his arms folded... his eyes shone with soul energy.

"Why are you attacking us?" Greg asked, a hint of desperation in his voice. It was almost as if he was completely ignorant.

Yokama frowned.

"You have great acting skills," Yokama said, "You’re fit to be a Money swindler, why waste away your talents at a lowly place like the Casino?"

"I..."

"You’re scared of how big everything is," Yokama said, "A small place like the casino couldn’t possibly compare to a place like the Smith’s shop but that doesn’t matter,"

"If you want the money, I can gi-"

"Why would I want the money?" Yokama asked while walking toward them, his hand on the hilt of his Sword, "When I can kill you and take the money then,"

Rem couldn’t even follow the movements of the man shortly after, he had vanished from his position and the next thing he heard was the violent thud of a body smashing against a wall.

Greg’s body hit the wall, a resounding thud echoing. Yokama’s fist was burning with soul energy, and his eyes full of malice.

"Humans are so fragile," He said while smashing Greg against the wall, the initial smash had no soul energy within it but the same could not be said about the second smash – Greg felt his ribs shatter under the impact and blood pour out from his nose and ears but he gritted his teeth, enduring... His consciousness threatened to leave him but he forced himself to stay awake, thinking of a way to make sure Rem would be safe.

"Get away from my Daddy!" Rem’s cry was heard and what followed was a slash at the hand that was holding Greg to the wall – if it was a regular slash, Yokama would not have felt anything from it yet this slash was anything but normal... green soul energy snaked around the blade, in the moment of desperation, Rem had forcefully unleashed his soul energy.

Yokama groaned and took his arm back, observing the clean cut on his skin despite the soul energy burning at his fist.

"I have no business with you," Yokama said and walked forward, the cut didn’t bleed – it wasn’t deep enough to cause the Beastkin to lose blood. In the end, Rem was just a child, any soul energy a little child could unleash wouldn’t be able to hurt an adult like Yokama.

Rem’s fists trembled, his head screamed at him to move but his body didn’t respond... he felt it at that moment, true fear. Yokama brought his palm down and struck him across the face, the strength in that blow was enough to send him flying across the street, the boy’s back slamming against the wall of a building.

"Rem!" Greg cried out, rage filling his eyes.
