Chapter 57: What did he signup for? (1)

In the Department of Axiomancy, both the Professor and his assistant sat in complete silence while pouting like children, each sporting a bump the size of a golf ball on their heads from where Kaizen had smacked them for laughing at his pitiful rank.

Sitting opposite to them was Kaizen himself, who was currently rearranging his thoughts and trying to figure out how he had ended up in this situation. He had smacked them both for laughing at his F-minus rank because honestly, how could they laugh at him like that?

Greatness grows from nothingness, and he was going to prove it to these two idiots.

"Hmmm, Professor Mortimer, Mr. Finch, let me ask you one important question that’s been bothering me. Why is the Vector Legion, which is supposedly the most powerful elite monster hunter group in the entire world and composed entirely of Axiomancers, so famous and successful, but nobody in the whole world wants to take on this stream?

"Isn’t that a complete juxtaposition? Shouldn’t people be flocking to pick the most powerful stream if it produces such legendary results?"

Hearing the question, the Professor frowned deeply and looked at his assistant like this kid was truly retarded and had just asked the dumbest question imaginable. Mr. Finch just shrugged helplessly and nudged the Professor to answer the question properly.

The Professor sighed like this was the most exhausting thing he had done all day, which considering he had only woken up thirty minutes ago was probably true, and took a long swing from his dark blue hip flask and reveled in the burning sensation coursing through his throat.

"Look kid, how many Axiomancers do you personally know about? Nobody, right? That’s because the rate at which a person could rank up and become powerful is what ultimately dictates what stream they want to choose for their future."

He burped in a completely ungentlemanly manner that would have horrified any noble and continued without shame.

"For example, Pyromancy is the world’s most studied stream of magic in existence. The accumulated knowledge about that stream is almost ninety-nine percent complete after centuries of research and documentation.

"The remaining one percent is just an open door for future discoveries, meaning that if someone in the future finds something completely new and manages a breakthrough, then those doors are technically open for advancement.

"But that’s extremely unlikely unless the person somehow reaches or goes beyond SSR rank, which is basically impossible for normal humans, so on the other hand, Axiomancy is the least studied and the most obscure magic in existence. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

"Even more obscure than some of the officially Forbidden magics, or commonly knows as Unorthodox magic, that are banned by international law. So my question to you is why exactly is that the case? Why is Axiomancy so rarely chosen and studied when it supposedly produces such powerful results?"

Kaizen was genuinely taken aback by the sudden clarity in the Professor’s speaking.

’So this guy could actually speak coherently and intelligently like this but actively chose to just be a drunkard ass most of the time.’

Also, Kaizen didn’t particularly like that the guy had basically countered his question with another question instead of just answering directly. Kaizen scratched his chin thoughtfully and pondered the matter for a second before responding.

"Because Pyromancy offers the easiest and most accessible destructive force across all ranks, even at lower ranks such as E and F ranks where other magic streams struggle to show results."

"Excellent deduction, Kaizen!"

Mr. Finch nodded his head enthusiastically and gave an encouraging thumbs up like a supportive parent.

The Professor smiled and nodded to himself with what might have been approval.

"Ah, not as smooth in the brain as you initially presented yourself to be."

Kaizen’s eye twitched violently at that backhanded compliment.

’Professor, your brain is the genuinely smooth one with all the alcohol constantly pickling it. It must be drunk twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.’

The Professor took another long chug from his flask, wiped his lips with the back of his hand like a barbarian, and continued his lecture.

"Pyromancy is the safest and simplest bet any person who wants to be a mage could possibly choose. Pyromancy offers high destructive power even for the lower rankers who are just starting out.

"And because of that, for anyone who’s not completely sure about their potential, or who has mediocre potential at best, they could safely choose Pyromancy without worrying too much about their future prospects.

"Not to mention the fact that if you can somehow squeeze your way up to rank D through hard work or luck, you could even get a unique ability too, which is incredibly valuable."

Magic offered unique abilities to users from their respective streams once they reached rank D, then again at rank B, and finally at rank S. Those were known as the Three Faces of Mastery.

Obviously not everyone could reach the final face of mastery since that required being an S-Ranker, but plenty of people could reach the second face and become celebrities themselves just from that achievement.

After all, unique abilities were unique to each individual user, so some abilities were naturally better than others, and some rare abilities might even be more useful than certain S-Ranker abilities depending on the situation.

The Professor took another long chug from his flask, and this time his movements were getting noticeably sluggish and uncoordinated, but Kaizen was too deep in thought processing this information to notice the deterioration, and Mr. Finch could only shake his head in resigned disappointment.

"So that’s exactly why everyone is flocking to sign up for Pyromancy like sheep following the herd. Coincidentally, Axiomancy is the least studied and the hardest stream of magic that simply isn’t worth the investment unless you can somehow reach S rank and are willing to wait until then to see real results."

Kaizen slowly nodded his head in understanding, and seeing his increasingly solemn expression, Mr. Finch quickly jumped in to add something.
