The Kingmaker System-Chapter 152 - 151. Something Sinister (1)
Chapter 152: 151. Something Sinister (1)
Warzone.
I had been on a warzone or rather on various battlefields in my previous lives but unlike the swords and arrows what I dealt with was flying bullets along with knives and all the other kinds of fights that would make a person feel like they would rather look for death than survival.
If the fights on the designated raid place weren’t enough then, I had also ended up fighting on training grounds and even on streets.
Needless to say, I had quite a notorious reputation for being a ruthless fighter in my past life.
I guess, the same notoriety had transversed to my Reina’s form as well.
It was the fourth round of sparring and the kids were drawing ragged breaths as they were barely able to keep up with my pace.
"Faster." I instructed and a few of them gritted their teeth before they charged at me.
After a few seconds, the result was still the same. The elves and dwarves who had requested me to spar with them for their training were all sprawled on the ground with bruised and battered bodies.
It had been a month since Rune and the rest of the boys left homes. The Queen had made sure to send her own son for the war as well, but she was smart enough to put him in a safer place with the Imperial Army as well as the Esmertia knights guarding him.
She must have planned to shame Eric and others if the war was lost and credit her son of we won. It was cheap but I couldn’t expect anything more from the woman who only knew how to spill blood to get what she wanted.
I couldn’t help but feel as if I was becoming like a ticking time bomb.
I had my plans set into motion and everything else was going smoothly enough. Everyone trusted that the plan will work out and the boys will be back safely and I was trying my best to also make myself believe that it would really end up like that.
Still, I wasn’t that thrilled to know that the frontlines were even more brutal than I’d expected.
As of now, Rune and Eric were doing well as per the reports that I received, courtesy to my own informants that were keeping an eye on the situation from the sidelines.
Lyall and Enora had led two teams of assassins to research about the alleged Monster battalion of Denril.
But, I hadn’t heard back from any of them yet.
Their task was to get rid of that team before Eric or anyone of the boys came across them.
If the boys ever came across that team then I could just march to Denril myself before I destroy Sestia.
That team’s winning rate was 100% no take backs and the ones who survived had testified that those guys were literal bloodhounds, they would go insane at the sight of blood and attack anyone they saw regardless of them being an enemy or an ally.
Those who had seen and survived hadn’t come out unscathed though, they were missing some body parts and we’re greatly traumatized. They wouldn’t ever return to the battlefield.
The kids retired back to the manor to receive the medical treatment and dinner while I returned to Ryujin mansion for completing the pending paperwork.
Roan had been taking care of my office work while the rest of the household personnel were able to handle themselves well in the absence of Enora and Lyall.
Dad wouldn’t ever voice out his worry but it was easy to see through his body language. I had to bring some of my work back to Aurelius mansion so that I could be in his sights and ease his worries a little.
Still, it wouldn’t be the same for all the time since I had to go to Eldarf and Mage’s Tower at times for work.
The entire kingdom was whipped in the autumn winds before we knew it but nobody held any balls or banquets.
It was the King’s orders that there won’t be any celebrations taking place in the Imperial palace until the war was over and along with both of his sons all the sons of the other citizens would safely come back.
A publicity stunt that was seen as with the perspective of a worried father, either ways, he was the one who failed to stop the Queen’s plans. From my spies I got to know that the King couldn’t do anything while the Queen had planned everything.
She had purposely made it so that it would seem that there was a need for more people on the warzone and dispatched Eric and those who supported him to the battlefields.
I would love to see what she would do if her son would be one who came back mutilated and as a corpse instead of the one whom she sent to die.
I picked up the white Queen from the chess game and clenched my fingers around it shattering it into pieces before I let the crushed pieces of ivory rained down on the game board.
My eyes fell on the dark knight on the chess game and I sighed as I recalled the certain person who would be fighting just like my brother and Eric at this moment.
Davian Raden Montaire.
He was dispatched to the frontlines along with Eric and Rune but their stations were at a bit of the distance. I had checked on the maps and calculated the distance.
Eric and Rune were placed in a region of marshy lands while Davian was in a hilly area. The distance was around two hours so, if there was any emergency then, Davian’s knights could easily be dispatched for the rescue.
Regardless, the progress on my side was quite good, the roots of Oasis Foundation were penetrating deeper and going wider quite smoothly.
The school had opened for the commoners since the noblekids were off for wars, the hospital and the other charitable facilities were also going on at a good scale.
The network of my information guild was also quite good and since Oasis Foundation was taking roots. But what was surprising was that I had someone who was willing to be an ally in my endeavours.
Even now, I was at the theatre after finishing my whole day’s work. Despite it being closed, I was there for a meeting with Lord Devil who had some information to share.
"Welcome, Lord Dragon. Please come this way."
The attendant whom I had seen last time greeted me as I entered the theatre and he led me up the stairs again but instead of the booth rooms which would lead to the balcony. He led me further up to a private lounge and asked me to sit before he left to fetch his Master.
I walked over and stood in front of the window watching the thriving night life, its grandeur had reduced to some extent but it was still going on even without the extravagantly spending nobles around.
"Thank you for coming, Lord Dragon." I heard the sleek voice and turned slightly to see Lord Devil entering.
"I apologise for making you wait," he smiled.
"It’s fine," I smiled back.
Both of us were well acquainted with the frequent meetings and also because I found him somehow relatable with our common interests and also because we loved staying in shadows.
He came over and stood beside me and I looked at his masked face through the reflection of the window.
We both had met often but none of us had taken an initiative of exposing our faces to each other. I didn’t find it uncomfortable as he was still doing a good job in trying to get on my side and I wasn’t going to expose my face unless I really had to.
"It’s a bit less noisy these days." He commented looking out of the window.
"My place seems to have a contrasting picture." I responded and he chuckled.
"I guess, I should drop by at Oasis the next time for our dinner then." He said and I smiled.
"Sure, you’re welcome anytime." freēnovelkiss.com
"But, I guess the theatre’s work must be hindered, right?" He asked and I nodded.
I had thought of establishing a theatre in Oasis but since the war situation arose, I couldn’t do it just yet.
"It’s fine, I’m sure Lord Oberon would be producing some extraordinary play in the meanwhile."
He looked at me with a smile before nodding, "I’m sure he will."
"Besides, what was the information that you wanted to give me?" I asked.
"Shall we sit and talk?" He gestured towards the couch and we walked over and sat down.
"I... heard that you were in Frosthail last winter for a brief period of time." He started and I tilted my head slightly.
"I was." I confirmed and he leaned ahead placing his arms on his thighs before he clasped his hands together.
"Then, you must also know that the Frosthail is the closest place to the shifters kingdom."
"Everyone knows that," I said in a deadpan tone making him smile.
"Apologies, but what I’m trying to tell you is that this new information is related to Frosthail," he said and his smile disappeared leaving behind a grim expression.
"And, it’s a bad news."
