The Informal Tomb Raiding Diary: She is the occupant of the tomb!-Chapter 177 - 178: So Annoyed I Can’t Speak Up
Since it was just a small souvenir and not something valuable, I didn’t pay it much heed. If it was taken, then so be it.
I glanced at Bi Shi. Didn’t she say she had hidden the music box? How could it have been found so easily!
But Bi Shi’s expression was relaxed, as if she wasn’t worried at all. I was suspicious, but kept my face expressionless.
Once the three of us were seated, Captain Jack put down his knife and fork, wiped his mouth. He struck me as the classic mob boss from a foreign gangster movie. Despite his sharp attire, he didn’t look like a good person.
The young man with an Eastern appearance tried to serve as our interpreter, but Qinghan interrupted him with a raised hand and told the blonde old man in fluent foreign language that he could communicate directly, needing no interpreter.
Probably, he also felt the young man’s Chinese was too awkward, listening to his winding pronunciation felt like it could tie one’s heart in knots.
The three of us sat down with our items, each facing our objects. Bi Shi opened the bundle in front of her, revealing a conch shell about the size of the music box.
I never noticed when she made the switch. No wonder she wasn’t nervous at all; she had prepared in advance.
Did Captain Jack put these three items on the table to return them to their original owners, or did he have another purpose?
I stared at the stone before me, listening intently to their conversation. He asked Qinghan where he got the sword from, seeming quite interested in the treasure sword.
Qinghan replied that he bought it after a collector friend passed away, and his family sold off some of the belongings.
He even casually mentioned the ’friend’s’ name, which made me suspect he had prepared this story long in advance.
He didn’t mention the Snow Mountain Ancient Tomb nor me, only saying that this collector friend had many private collections, some that had never been shown to anyone.
Since he dared name names, he must not fear anyone investigating. Even if they traced it to the collector’s family, no loopholes would be found.
Plus, Qinghan’s apparent identity was that of a university professor with complete records and evidence, and he knew many friends in authentication and antiquities. All this information was verifiable.
Regarding funding, his parents and aunt left him two inheritances, and he owned several properties, so buying an antique treasure sword wasn’t anything unusual.
He explained that the family didn’t know the sword’s origins, assuming it was an old sword sold to him.
Normally, nobody would use a sword for random chopping; it was only after he bought it that he discovered its sharpness, making it a useful self-defense weapon.
Listening to his pile of lies for a long while, I almost believed it myself.
Then Captain Jack suddenly switched topics, turning his gaze to Bi Shi, asking where she found the conch shell.
Bi Shi said she found it on the speedboat, thought it was pretty and wanted to bring it as a souvenir, so she wrapped it up to avoid it getting damaged and carried it with her.
I suddenly remembered that there were several empty conch shells under the speedboat seats. The guides had collected some for backup food before boarding, and Bi Shi had prepared to switch early on.
While on the speedboat, I didn’t notice her making any moves, and Jack’s men had thoroughly searched the boat, so she couldn’t have hidden the music box there.
The only possibility was she hid the music box on the island while the guides were gathering conch shells.
During the time we stayed on the beach, I didn’t notice what she was doing.
If she could control He Su, she could return to the island, and since she already knew the secret to entering and exiting the Sea of Sunken Ships, hiding the music box on the island first, then retrieving it later when safe, was indeed the safest plan.
Qinghan translated Captain Jack’s question for him.
Bi Shi shrugged, saying she found it on the island, and if he liked, there were uglier ones under the speedboat seats, not as nice as hers.
Captain Jack lowered his gaze, scanning the conch in front of Bi Shi. The creatures within the Sea of Sunken Ships rarely saw humans and thus looked quite wild.
The conch Bi Shi called ’pretty’ had patterns on the outside like a human face, but with features resembling a ghost from "Ju-on."
On the table, it looked like a squashed head of the dead, warranting pixelation just for showing up.
Having something like this proved we visited the island. Besides, there were hanging remains of a monster on the speedboat, albeit too decomposed for original recognition.
Like a student ready to answer a teacher’s question, I organized my thoughts as other classmates responded, hoping to perform well when my turn came.
But Captain Jack skipped over me, directly ordering his men to serve the dishes.
I had crafted an exciting and tumultuous origin for the stone for nothing.
Soon, Captain Jack’s men brought out three plates, each containing a piece of meat the size of a ping pong ball.
The plates were large, with a small piece of meat. Even if pork prices increased, chicken could substitute. He himself had a large steak earlier; how stingy!
But when placed on the table, I realized it wasn’t meat, but an eyeball.
At first glance, I thought he had gouged out the guides’ eyes to intimidate us.
On closer inspection, the eyeballs were larger with double pupils than a human’s.
The pupils hadn’t dilated. How fresh must these eyeballs be?!
"Where you’re heading next, the only way through is by eating them," Captain Jack said with a smile.
This time, Qinghan didn’t translate for him and instead asked where he was taking us.
I didn’t care if it was eyeballs or brains; my concern was my inability to digest normal food. If its special effects needed a human digestive system, then it was useless to me.
My digestive system might just break it down, and that would be it.
Captain Jack continued with his mystery, saying once there, all would be clear; we just needed to prepare ahead.
Hearing this, Bi Shi opened her mouth wide and brought it near the plate, inhaling the ping pong ball-sized eyeball into her mouth. Without chewing, she gulped it down.
This left Captain Jack stunned. I wanted to remind Bi Shi to be more cautious. Captain Jack wasn’t as easily fooled as Cong Zhibo and the others. The way she ate surpassed the eyeball’s owner, like a snake swallowing an egg.
"Rest assured, my men have all eaten them," Captain Jack said to the still hesitant Qinghan.
Qinghan was more composed, using the chopsticks Captain Jack had specially prepared for us, picking up the eyeball elegantly, and eating it slowly.
I didn’t want to chew slowly like him or wolf it down like Bi Shi.
Under Captain Jack’s urging gaze, I picked up the eyeball with my hand, put it to my mouth, bit a small piece first at the pupil to suck out the juices, then put the remaining flesh into my mouth.
