The Husband I Snatched Is Not Right!-Chapter 56: This Girl Really Pushes Her Luck
Even with Hunter Peng accompanying, Hui Niang was still anxious, worried about unexpected incidents along the way. She prepared enough dry food and sent him to the door, still reminding him incessantly.
"In the mountains, listen to Hunter Peng’s instructions, don’t act on your own and make things difficult for him."
"Don’t worry about us at home, Wan Niang and I will take care of Lang."
"Even if the mountain road clears, you might not receive news. If you return and find the house locked and no one there, we’ve gone to the county town."
"I’ve prepared seven or eight days of rations, but the household can’t afford more. Hunter Peng is a big eater, so make sure he doesn’t hold back. Finding ginseng would be great, but if not, just come back. Our Lang is married now, and we’re getting old, our bodies aren’t what they used to be, so don’t try to show off. If something happens to you again, the three of us won’t survive."
Listening to his wife’s chatter, Wei Shouzhong smiled.
"I know, I’ll listen to you. With Brother Peng around, it will be fine. Don’t see me off, I’m leaving now."
Hui Niang stood by the door, waving at him. She watched as Wei Shouzhong walked to Hunter Peng waiting ahead.
Hunter Peng called out "uncle," and easily took the rations Wei Shouzhong was carrying onto his own back.
Their silhouettes grew smaller and finally disappeared.
Hui Niang wiped away the tears at the corner of her eyes, came back to her senses, and turned to meet Yu Tingwan’s eyes.
Feeling a bit awkward, she fiddled with her clothes’ hem: "You must think it’s funny."
She longed for the family to spend a complete New Year together, but her fears loomed larger. She feared something happening to Lang, with her husband absent, fearing that in the future... there would be no more chances.
"I know your heart aches, but when Husband gets better, we’ll have many reunions in the years to come."
Hui Niang gathered herself, forcing a smile: "You’re right, I was stuck in my worries."
She looked around: "Where is Yue Shan?"
With Hunter Peng leaving his son here, she knew they had to take good care of him.
Men never have the delicacy of women, and the child with him sometimes went hungry, sometimes full. How thin he had become, even shorter than his peers.
Yu Tingwan: "I just served him a small bowl of Laba Congee, he’s sitting in the kitchen drinking it now."
She sighed, feeling a bit emotional.
"Hasn’t Hunter Peng looked for anyone all these years?"
If there was a woman at home to take care of Yue Shan, he could be at ease when traveling, and the child wouldn’t have to endure hardships with exposure to the elements.
Hui Niang lowered her voice: "He did look."
With money in Hunter Peng’s hands, remarrying wouldn’t be difficult.
"The woman he last married was good, keeping everything in order, praised by the village. But within two years, he found many signs of beatings on the child."
If she’s not his own, even if not fond, there’s no need to abuse.
"In anger, he divorced her. Perhaps scared, he hasn’t looked again."
After all, it’s someone else’s household matters, Yu Tingwan didn’t want to pry further. She glanced towards the kitchen: "Should we boil some water later to wash him up?"
The child was really dirty.
With messy hair and dirt all over, but one could see Hunter Peng’s care for his son in the sturdy cotton clothes even though they were covered in mud.
By midday, the Wei Family was filled with a tantalizing aroma.
People nearby came out, taking deep breaths.
"What’s Hui Niang cooking this time?"
Kids at home were clamoring for it.
Not much, Hui Niang was only braising some intestines.
The fire in the stove was just right, and the prepared intestines were simmering in the pot, requiring no one to stand guard.
Hui Niang was weaving baskets at the kitchen door.
Yue Shan, freshly cleaned, was quietly building a snowman in the yard.
Not rowdy at all, rather obedient, he would occasionally help Hui Niang by handing things over.
Yu Tingwan couldn’t stand seeing Wei Zhao lying down when awake, so she helped him to the window.
Seeing Wei Zhao not reacting negatively to her proximity calmed her heart.
The girl just... seized the moment.
Testing Wei Zhao’s expression, she slowly hooked her finger around his arm.
After spending time together, knowing Yu Tingwan’s headstrong nature, Wei Zhao didn’t bother with her small actions.
"Husband, doesn’t Yue Shan look nice?"
Although thin and dark, if well cared for, the looks would surely turn out proper.
Wei Zhao glanced over, withdrew his gaze listlessly: "No, he doesn’t."
Yu Tingwan: "I wish our future son would be just as quiet and obedient."
The two had no future prospects together, making it impossible for Wei Zhao to entertain her thoughts.
Yet, Yu Tingwan’s eyes sparkled with soft hope: "I can teach him to read in the future."
"No need for fame and exams, but literacy at least resists ignorance."
Yu Tingwan’s plans were detailed: "If we have the means, we could send him to learn martial arts."
This world was too chaotic.
Poor families had to rely on some toughness to survive.
As she spoke, her fingers continued their exploration.
The girl’s actions were bold, entwining her fingers with Wei Zhao’s firmly.
Wei Zhao’s eyes flickered imperceptibly.
Expressionless, he looked at Yu Tingwan: "Let go." 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
What wouldn’t she dare do?
Yu Tingwan, however, felt content.
Even if holding hands with him didn’t spark any distinct feeling, she never understood how although Hu Dalang didn’t initially fancy Mrs. Xiao, upon her initiating closeness, he didn’t pull away, leading both of them to blush slightly.
But whatever other couples had, she and Wei Shen should too!
Yu Tingwan defenselessly asked: "Why let go?"
"You’ll get used to it."
"If holding hands overwhelms you, how will we kiss in the future?"
She genuinely thought so.
Wei Zhao’s hand was cold, yet Yu Tingwan’s warmth seeped through seamlessly.
He pursed his lips, a peculiar emotion stirring within him, faint but elusive.
Seeing that he didn’t say anything that would ruin the mood, Yu Tingwan was even more satisfied. Life in the Wei Family was better than she imagined.
Yu Tingwan: "Husband."
Wei Zhao didn’t want to pay her any mind!
"The child would best..."
Yu Tingwan glanced at Wei Zhao.
"Best not to look like you."
He should appear rugged.
Yu Tingwan considered: "Like Hunter Peng would be nice."
Wei Zhao almost laughed angrily.
Clearly, he could ignore it all. No matter what Yu Tingwan said, he stayed unmoved and indifferent.
Yet, whether it was Yu Tingwan provoking him multiple times or the mental conditioning over the days.
Wei Zhao replied coldly, indifferently: "Oh, so my son will have another man’s face?"
Do you think that’s appropriate?
The girl sensed an ironic tone, but she continued her vision: "Both reading and martial arts need foundations. At first, practicing stances is necessary. Husband can supervise him. As he grows older, if you can’t teach him, we’ll seek a dojo."
"Back in the day, my father was picked by the Escort Agency for his skills."
Wei Zhao had taken down enemy generals, evoking envy and desire for his guidance.
"I can’t teach him?"
