The Hunter's Gonna Lay Low-Chapter 189
Faced with a reality he didn’t want to confront, Uijae squeezed his eyes shut. First, they had to share a bed in the Memorial Dungeon, and now they were wearing matching pajamas? This was insane!
Fortunately, Sayoung had his eyes closed, sitting on the couch with his hand on his temple as if he were asleep. He hadn’t seen Uijae’s distress. Silently, Uijae tiptoed towards the living room.
The wallpaper, the layout of the house, and the furniture were all familiar, save for a few differences. This place was similar to what he had seen in the Memorial Dungeon, but it wasn’t the same.
The world he had seen through the Memorial Dungeon and the watch belonged to the first world. But this...
*It’s not the first world, is it?*
Had he arrived at the right place? Uijae pulled back the white curtain covering the living room window. His face twisted into a frown.
“...”
All he saw was darkness.
Normally, he should be able to see the street, but beyond the large window was complete blackness—just like the door outside the Memorial Dungeon.
*Are they telling me to figure it out myself?*
His reflection appeared in the glass. A disheveled Cha Uijae in loose silk pajamas, his black hair slightly messy. He reached up to touch his head, feeling awkward. Just then, in the reflection, a dark figure loomed behind him. The shadowy silhouette had glowing violet eyes.
Uijae whipped around, but all he saw was the peaceful living room and a sleeping Sayoung. He turned back to the glass. The shadow had shifted into Sayoung, his violet eyes narrowing.
Uijae squinted back at the reflection.
“You...”
*Ah, I didn’t expect you to choose this method... How creative.*
A voice, laced with amusement, echoed in the air. Sayoung stifled a chuckle behind his fist, clearly enjoying the situation. It seemed like Uijae had come to the right place after all. After laughing quietly to himself for a while, Sayoung muttered.
*Still, I’m glad you came to see me... Though I’m disappointed we didn’t get to share a bed.*
“Share a bed, my ass. I don’t have time for your nonsense. I came here for information.”
*Of course you did... So, what is it you want to know?*
“I need to know how the end comes and what causes it.”
*And?*
“How to stop it.”
Sayoung tilted his head.
*Ah, well... you’ve already failed twice.*
“You turned back time because you thought I could stop it, didn’t you?”
*I did?*
“Yes. You did.”
*No, I didn’t.*
Uijae’s eyes widened. In the reflection, Sayoung smiled softly, his loose hair partially obscuring his face. His expression was more animated than the other versions of Sayoung from the second world. He moved his lips silently.
*Did you really think I’d turn back time to let you stop the end?*
“No?”
*Good grief... Think a little harder.*
Sayoung exaggeratedly shrugged, as if Uijae’s ignorance was disappointing. Just as Uijae was about to snap back, Sayoung spoke first.
*I turned back time because you died.*
“And that’s the same thing, isn’t it?”
*Of course not. Even if the world is destroyed, as long as you’re alive... the end of the world is no big deal.*
Sayoung’s face darkened. His twisted smile stretched wide across his face like a wound.
*It doesn’t matter at all.*
“...”
*So don’t go on about stopping the end. Don’t even think about it.*
“And I’m supposed to just watch the world collapse? Do you really think I can just sit back and let that happen?”
*I figured you’d say something like that... but hearing it doesn’t make me happy.*
The sinister, devilish smile vanished, replaced by a blank expression. Sayoung shrugged his shoulders again, this time with indifference.
*Well, since you’re here, you might as well look around. You won’t find the information you’re looking for, though.*
With those final words, Sayoung dissolved into [N O V E L I G H T] the darkness. Uijae stared at his reflection for a long moment before scratching his head in frustration.
So he’d made it to the twisted Sayoung’s world. Now, he had to figure out the next step. He peeked beyond the curtain. Sayoung was still asleep on the couch.
*Did Sayoung get pulled into this world with me?*
He needed to wake him up and find out. Uijae crept over to Sayoung, crouching down with his hands behind his back, peering closely at Sayoung’s face.
Slightly parted lips, long eyelashes, occasionally twitching eyelids, and a sharp nose... Uijae was just about to wake him when—
“Mmm...”
Sayoung’s eyelids fluttered, revealing his violet eyes. He blinked slowly, staring blankly at Uijae, who waved a hand in front of his face.
“Are you awake?”
“...”
“We need to talk.”
“...”
Sayoung blinked a few more times, seemingly unable to fully wake up. Uijae had no choice but to tug at his cheek.
“What are you doing?”
Sayoung scowled and slapped Uijae’s hand away. Good, his usual bad attitude was back. That meant it was the Sayoung Uijae knew. Sayoung looked around the room before finally focusing on Uijae.
“...What’s with the pajamas?”
“I don’t know. I woke up in them. You’re wearing them too, you know.”
Sayoung glanced down at his matching silk pajamas and sighed deeply.
“I guess we really are in the right place... judging by the looks of it.”
“Seems like it.”
Leaning back against the couch, Sayoung asked, “Okay, we’ve dealt with the first hurdle. So what’s the plan now?”
“We’ll have to go through this jerk’s memories. I’ll find out how the end came and how to stop it. There has to be a clue.”
“Well, fine.”
Sayoung stood up. Uijae blinked in surprise.
“...You’re not going to stop me?”
“Why would I stop you?”
Sayoung blinked back, and Uijae blinked along with him. Right, why had he thought Sayoung would try to stop him? Was it because the twisted Sayoung had threatened him earlier?
Sayoung yawned, rubbing the back of his neck as he mumbled lazily.
“That’s what we came here for, right? Crawling around, getting close to each other.”
“Can you not make it sound so weird?”
“What? It’s the truth. Anyway...”
Sayoung’s eyes narrowed sharply as he stared into the empty space.
“It’s best to finish quickly... whatever this is.”
“What, do you sense something strange?”
“You don’t feel it?”
“Huh?”
Uijae looked at Sayoung in confusion. Now that he looked closer, there was a hint of discomfort on his face. Sayoung clenched and unclenched his fist, rotated his neck, and moved his legs as if testing his body’s range of motion. He muttered in annoyance.
“I feel weirdly heavy. Like I’ve been cursed or restricted.”
Uijae tested his own body, moving his fingers and toes, but felt nothing out of the ordinary. His state was the same as in the original world. Was this another one of the twisted Sayoung’s tricks? Uijae glanced at Sayoung with concern.
“Will you be able to fight?”
“I’m not sure... honestly.”
“Do you want to stay here and rest? I can explore alone.”
“Stop spouting nonsense...”
Sayoung grabbed Uijae’s shoulder tightly. His violet eyes gleamed with intensity.
“Go change your clothes. Let’s see what this amazing memory has to offer.”
---
Thankfully, the wardrobe contained several of Uijae’s black outfits from when he worked as J, and his mask was neatly placed inside as well. After donning his clothes and mask, he headed back to the living room. Sayoung, now dressed in a coat, looked tired as he glanced at Uijae.
“You sure you’re okay?”
“I can move... just a little sluggish, that’s all.”
His eyes were half-lidded, and he rubbed them before heading toward the front door. Two pairs of boots and slippers were neatly lined up there. Sayoung shoved his feet into the boots and spoke up.
“In the Memorial Dungeon, you lived in a different house, right?”

“Yeah. I did.”
“Why are we in this house now? The one you used to live in?”
As Sayoung’s back rustled while he put on his boots, Uijae blurted out the first thought that came to mind.
“Maybe because it was a safer place? In that world, you weren’t an awakened Hunter, and your eyes were hurt from the poison. You were just a regular guy. Maybe you moved to a safer neighborhood or closer to a hospital.”
“...”
“Well, I mean... that’s what I would’ve done if it were me. And that version of Cha Uijae was still me, after all...”
Finishing his sentence, Uijae felt awkward. He cleared his throat and stood up. Just then, a rough hand grabbed his arm. He was about to pull away, but when he saw Sayoung’s face moving closer, he hesitated. Their faces grew closer and closer until—
**Beep—Beep—Beep—**
A loud alarm blared. Uijae’s eyes widened, and he glanced around the
room. An alarm, all of a sudden? Sayoung groaned, clutching his shoulder, his body trembling as small electric sparks flickered around him.
“Lee Sayoung! What’s going on?”
“I... I don’t know...”
Sayoung’s body jerked uncontrollably, as if he were being electrocuted. Uijae suddenly realized that the blaring alarm sounded familiar. Then, a bright white screen appeared in front of them.
---
**[Warning: Act according to your role.]**
**[Lee Sayoung’s role is to be a cherished younger sibling.]**
---
“Huh?”
“What kind of bullsh—”
Sayoung struggled to spit out a curse. Wait, act according to your role? Then what about me? Uijae quickly scrolled through the screen to check his own role. And what he saw was...
---
**[Cha Uijae’s role is ( ).]**

...nothing.
