The Headline Queen: President Hawthorne is Her Die-Hard Fan!-Chapter 443: Make Her Leave
Mrs. Hawthorne said coldly, "Let her come? Do you think someone with her temper can tolerate a child born to Julian and another woman?"
In Mrs. Hawthorne’s mind, Paige Sterling was the most venomous woman in the world. If she found out a woman was pregnant with Julian’s child, Paige would probably force a miscarriage on the spot.
She would never allow such a situation to happen.
Simon Hawthorne tried to explain to his mother.
"But this isn’t my brother’s child, Mom. You know about his condition, he can’t get close to others, how could he have come into contact with another woman?"
"Maybe your brother’s condition was cured long ago. If he could be with Paige, there might also be another exception."
Mrs. Hawthorne didn’t really believe that her son had such a peculiar condition, nor did she think it was her fault.
She even thought that Julian was being dramatic. Was he pretending to have that condition to deliberately make her feel guilty?
Simon didn’t know about those messy thoughts in his mother’s mind and tried to reason with her, hoping she’d understand the seriousness of the situation.
"Mom, this woman showed up right after my brother’s incident with ulterior motives. Keeping her in the Hawthorne family is like inviting a wolf into the house. If word spreads, it will ruin my brother’s reputation and make him a target of criticism. Also, in case my brother isn’t really in trouble and he returns to find out you’ve kept such a woman to hurt my sister-in-law, what would he think?"
"If your brother really comes back, he can just get a divorce; this kind of jealous woman isn’t what the Hawthorne family needs."
Simon went silent, thinking how naive it was to believe divorce would be that easy. His sister-in-law held a military rank now.
Mrs. Hawthorne continued, "Simon, it’s not that I’m cursing your brother, but he still hasn’t been found and those people are ruthless, so your brother is likely in deep trouble."
As she spoke, Mrs. Hawthorne shed a few tears. The death of her son made her a little sad, but more relieved.
The existence of Julian was a constant reminder of her past crimes.
The attempt to reconcile with Julian before was merely because the Hawthorne family’s power was in his hands; if she didn’t please this son, her future was uncertain.
But now, with Julian gone, the Hawthorne family’s power would fall into Simon’s hands.
This son was on her side, so she had nothing to fear and wasn’t truly saddened by Julian’s death.
However, for appearance’s sake, she had to act sad since, after all, this son got into trouble saving her in the first place.
"Your brother risked his life to save Mom; he was a good kid. I can’t let him go without leaving behind a legacy. This child must be kept. If you have an issue with it, I’ll raise him myself, so during holidays, someone will visit your brother’s grave. At least I won’t have failed him..."
Simon’s face was extremely stern, "Mom, what are you talking about? My brother can’t be in trouble!"
"I know you don’t want to accept this fact, and it’s hard to believe your brother could die at such a young age, but what can we do? The dead are gone; the living must continue with life. Mom has to gather herself so as not to sadden your brother in the afterlife..."
Simon was speechless.
No one truly believed Julian was in trouble, why did his mother seem so eager?
Could it be that his mother didn’t have the slightest affection for his brother?
Simon already felt disheartened by Mrs. Hawthorne; now he felt even more so.
If she was like this to his brother, how much affection did she really have for him, her younger son?
After all, he wasn’t the son of Mrs. Hawthorne’s beloved man and was born when she hadn’t expected to.
"Mom, have you ever considered sister-in-law’s feelings? She hasn’t wronged the Hawthorne family..."
"Why bring her up? She hasn’t wronged us? She’s done plenty to wrong the family! My brother’s incident was all because of her! If she’d stayed quietly at home raising children, would those people have targeted her? Would they have kidnapped me? Now that my brother’s in trouble, if she still has a conscience, she’d accept this child and raise them as her own; otherwise, how can she face the family?"
Mrs. Hawthorne’s attitude was firm, "Don’t try to persuade me anymore. This child must stay! Anyone who tries to harm this child is forcing me to my death!"
Simon was momentarily lost for words.
After a while, he looked at Mrs. Hawthorne with a composed expression and said, "Mom, if you insist this is a Hawthorne child and want to keep this woman in the family, you’re forcing me. I hope you think it over, you’ve already lost one son, do you wish to lose your other son too?"
Mrs. Hawthorne stared at Simon in disbelief, shocked that her usually obedient younger son would stand against her.
"What do you mean? Are you trying to turn against your mother like your brother did for that woman?"
Before Simon could respond, Mrs. Hawthorne said angrily, "I knew that woman was a siren, seducing one of my sons wasn’t enough, she even wants the other!"
"Mom, I’m your real son, how can you say such things?!"
He and Paige had nothing going on, yet his mother was the first to start making wild assumptions before anyone else did. Was this really his mother?
Simon’s disappointment with Mrs. Hawthorne grew.
No wonder his brother couldn’t feel any affection for this mother.
Even for him, who had some affection, now any remaining feelings were almost eroded away by Mrs. Hawthorne’s actions.
Seeing the anger in Simon’s expression, Mrs. Hawthorne decided to drop the matter.
She only had this son left; what would she do in the future if they turned against each other too?
"I spoke out of anger, Simon; don’t hold it against me," Mrs. Hawthorne said gently. "I know you’re fond of your brother and hope he’ll return safely, but Simon, we also have to make long-term plans. If something really happens to your brother, this could be his only child. Do you really want your brother to leave no descendants?"
Simon tightly pressed his lips together and remained silent.
Mrs. Hawthorne suggested, "How about this? Let’s settle her down, keep her in the family under our watch. Even if she has some scheme, she can’t act on it. If the child is born as a Hawthorne, we’ll give them status and send her off with money. If it’s not our family’s child, we’ll kick her out, alright?"
