The God of Football Starts With Passive Skills-Chapter 108 - 46: Beating 4 Players! Player of the Round! What a Thrilling Bundesliga Season
Inside the Ball God System, Wang Shuo stood before a gigantic football.
To his left was the Personal Attribute Panel, which listed all the Passive Skills he had obtained so far.
National Level [Breathing], Regional Level [Ball Sense], Professional Level [Insight], [Swift], [First Move], [Spiritual Light], and the special Passive Skill [Damage Reduction].
Out of the 12 total Passive Skills, he had already obtained 7.
Each one had given him a massive boost.
But now, as Mainz’s starting striker, Wang Shuo felt his performance still wasn’t good enough.
During the match against Schalke 04, Wang Shuo had been heavily marked by the opposition.
Although he had worked tirelessly to find and create opportunities throughout the entire match, he had failed to score or provide an assist.
This left a bitter taste in Wang Shuo’s mouth.
It was especially galling to hear after the match that both Ibisevic and Helmes had scored again.
After six rounds of matches, both of these top strikers had scored seven goals.
Ibisevic also had three assists to his name.
In the previous round, during Bayer Leverkusen’s 4-0 demolition of Hannover 96, Helmes not only scored a hat-trick but also provided an assist, single-handedly orchestrating the victory.
Although Wang Shuo was still third on the goal-scoring chart, he couldn’t help but feel dissatisfied.
Especially since both Ibisevic and Helmes had scored.
’So what?’
’Because they’re both 24-year-old, seasoned professionals?’
’What difference does that make?’
’Who says an 18-year-old can’t compete with a 24-year-old?’
’Back when an 18-year-old Owen was in the Premier League, he beat out legendary strikers like Bergkamp, the Black Wind Double Killers, and Sheringham. With 18 goals and 12 assists, he won both the Premier League Golden Boot Award and Player of the Year. Who dared to question him then?’
’Back when an 18-year-old Ronaldo was at Eindhoven, he scored 30 goals, leaving everyone in the dust. He surpassed his contemporary Cruyff and defeated strikers like Litmanen and Roy Makaay to win the Eredivisie Golden Boot. Who could argue with that?’
And right now, Wang Shuo was simply not satisfied.
He was determined to compete!
He still hadn’t used the Skill Card he’d received as a reward for the [Achievement: Desperate Struggle] during the Bayern match.
After long consideration, Wang Shuo finally decided to upgrade one of his existing Passive Skills.
He needed to improve his performance, and fast.
He was already very familiar with most of his current Passive Skills, as he had practiced them repeatedly throughout the entire summer training camp.
He could use them all with ease.
He had gotten [Spiritual Light] during the Bayern match, but he still hadn’t fully mastered it.
Rather than drawing a new Passive Skill, it would be better to just upgrade an existing one.
Among his existing Passive Skills, [Breathing] was sufficient for now, and [Ball Sense] was also pretty good.
That meant choosing one of the four Professional Level Passive Skills to upgrade.
[Spiritual Light] was the first to be ruled out.
In the end, Wang Shuo chose [Swift].
[Insight] was more about off-the-ball movement and team play.
[First Move], on the other hand, was more for one-on-one situations.
But [Swift] was different. It could make Wang Shuo faster.
And faster in every respect!
Ahem, with one particular exception.
With that thought, Wang Shuo immediately used his only remaining Passive Skill Card.
"Use Passive Skill Card to upgrade [Swift] from Professional Level to Regional Level?"
Wang Shuo chose [Yes] without hesitation.
Immediately, he felt a warm current surge through his body, seeping into every blood vessel and every inch of his skin.
A pleasant, tingling sensation spread throughout his body.
Wang Shuo knew he was getting stronger!
He got a better sense of the change during the afternoon training session, especially in the scrimmage.
His teammates around him had gotten "slower" again.
If they had seemed to be moving at 0.9x speed before, now it felt like 0.8x.
But thanks to his previous experience, Wang Shuo knew what was happening.
It wasn’t that they had gotten slower—he was the one getting faster!
After the training session, Wang Shuo stayed behind for extra practice on his own initiative.
Subotic and Schürrle joined him.
His two buddies were his standard training partners.
Kramny, meanwhile, acted as his coach during the extra practice.
But none of them noticed anything different about Wang Shuo.
After all, it was just training.
Isn’t there a saying?
On the training ground, everyone is Ronaldinho.
The Marseille Turn, La Croqueta, the Elastico, step-overs...
Basically any player who makes it to a top-tier league can pull those off.
The true test of skill is doing it on the pitch during a real match, under the pressure of the defense.
...
October 4th, 1:45 PM. Prussian Park Stadium.
Bundesliga Matchday 7. Mainz, away from home, challenged Borussia Mönchengladbach.
In the 25th minute, Mainz won a throw-in on the left flank, near the opponent’s penalty area.
Left-back Lővér stood on the sideline, hoisting the ball high over his head with both hands.
Foyelner and Hainauer both ran to make themselves available for the pass.
Borussia Mönchengladbach, however, was defensively set and waiting.
The home team had adopted a 4-4-2 formation for the day, focusing on defensive counter-attacks, and their three defensive lines were incredibly tight.
Their formation was virtually impenetrable, especially in and around their own penalty area.
Lővér stood on the sideline, glancing first toward Foyelner.
Before he could even throw the ball in, a defender was already moving to cover him.
He turned toward Hainauer, but there was no opening there, either.
Under such tight marking, a throw-in would almost certainly mean losing possession.
Lővér was indecisive, not knowing what to do, but time was ticking. Any more hesitation would result in a foul.
Just then, Wang Shuo suddenly changed his run, darting toward the left corner of the penalty area and raising his hand, calling for a quick throw to his feet.
