Chapter 41 -41 He and Timothy Garrison are truly father and son
“I refuse.”
In the side room of the Jennings Family house, Scarlett Jennings looked at Josiah Garrison and refused without hesitation.
Josiah appeared visibly taken aback and even thought he had misheard.
“What, what did you say?”
“I said, I- re- fuse.” Seeing his puzzled expression, Scarlett patiently repeated it one word at a time.
Josiah’s face didn’t look pleasantly surprised.
Including last time, this was the second time Scarlett didn’t do as he said.
“Scarlett, don’t throw a tantrum. I know you’re still angry about Mom making you leave the Garrison Family that day, but everyone is family. Moreover, if it weren’t for Mom and Dad, you wouldn’t be back with the Jennings Family now.”
Scarlett glanced at him. “So, according to you, I should be grateful to you all?”
Josiah was just about to speak when Scarlett interrupted him again, “Besides, I am no longer part of your family; I now bear the Jennings name.”
“Even if you’ve acknowledged your biological parents, we’re still family!” Josiah frowned. “Or are you genuinely like they say, now that you’ve become the Jennings Family’s young lady, you don’t want to recognize us anymore?”
Scarlett just looked at him, then asked monotonously, “And what if I say yes?”
…
When Lucas Jennings came downstairs to get freshly squeezed juice, he saw Adam Jennings leaning against the second-floor railing, watching something with an amused expression. As he approached, he happened to overhear Scarlett’s statement.
The Jennings Family villa had two living rooms, one at the front and one at the back. The front one was generally for family gatherings or entertaining guests and was more formal. The back one was smaller and directly faced the second-floor banister, meaning from the second floor, one could clearly see what was happening in the side room.
Lucas nearly forgot the juice instantly and leaned over to listen.
The two heads huddled together, eavesdropping on the gossip downstairs.
Downstairs, Scarlett maintained her somewhat indifferent stance and simply said, “The day I left the Garrison Family, I said we are no longer related. Even if I weren’t the Jennings’ young lady, I wouldn’t want to recognize you all.”
Josiah, affected by Scarlett’s words, had a momentary lapse with an ugly expression, but he quickly composed himself, speaking in a subdued voice.
“Scarlett, I’ve already heard about what happened at the banquet. Whatever Mom and Dad’s reasons, they did raise you. You’re so eager to clear ties with the Garrison Family in front of everyone. Don’t you know how much it hurt them? Mom and Dad have never quarreled before, and because of you, they argued fiercely. They fell ill that very day.”
Josiah initially delivered a stern lecture and then softened his tone. “Despite everything, they didn’t blame you. They even let me bring Grandma’s bracelet to you. Scarlett, Mom and Dad have been really good to you. Don’t always be so ungrateful.”
Scarlett’s temples throbbed slightly.
She always thought Josiah was the only normal one in the Garrison Family. After all, since she was young, he never intentionally suppressed her like Isolde Garrison or made her take the blame. Instead, he would care about her studies, give her birthday gifts, and sometimes comfort her when Emma White reprimanded her.
Because of this, she tried to treat Josiah as a real brother, doing various things for him, trying to get some warmth from him.
But later, she found out.
Josiah wasn’t as she thought he was.
He cared about her studies only because he didn’t want her to tarnish the Garrison Family’s reputation. The birthday gifts he gave her were from his admirers that he didn’t want, and he comforted her just to prevent her from making a scene.
Josiah just knew better how to disguise his hypocrisy and selfishness compared to the Garrison Family.
In this regard, he and Timothy Garrison truly were father and son.
“That bracelet was originally left to me by Grandma; you want my help, yet I only asked Isolde to return the things she took from me by hand. I’ve been really good to you all, so why are you so ungrateful?”
Scarlett bluntly retorted Josiah’s words back to him, and Lucas upstairs almost burst out laughing but managed to stifle it with his hand over his mouth.
Down below, the two appeared unaware of this.
Josiah furrowed his brows directly. “Isolde got hurt! Seriously hurt!”
“What does that have to do with me?”
Hearing this, Josiah looked at her incredulously. “Scarlett! What’s happened to you?! Isolde is your sister; she called you her sister for over ten years!”
Scarlett just looked at him, a bitter smile tugging at her lips, and her tone was laced with irony. “A sister who pushes me in front of a car to save herself is not a sister I need.”
She didn’t tell anyone about the car accident that day.
Because she knew that even if she did, no one would believe her.
The car accident Emma White deemed Isolde’s eighteen-year-old disaster was directed at her from the start, but Isolde’s first instinct was to push her out when she saw the car coming.
Only Emma White and Isolde never expected that she would survive that accident.
And as Scarlett had anticipated, Josiah’s first reaction upon hearing this was disbelief.
“What nonsense are you talking?! Isolde could never do such a thing!”
“Scarlett, I understand you’re unsettled by the accident, but you can’t wrongly blame someone else.”
“You say Isolde pushed you into the car’s path; why didn’t you say anything then?”
“Even if, against all odds, Isolde really did that, it was because she was too scared, an unconscious act. As an older sister, what’s wrong with taking the hit for Isolde? Why do you always have to be so petty?”
Josiah reprimanded, his tone full of reproach and disappointment in Scarlett, to a speechless Lucas upstairs.
When he heard the accusation of Scarlett being “petty,” the young man completely lost his composure.
“Well, crap, look at my hot temper!”
Cursing as he rolled up his sleeves, he rushed downstairs so quickly that Adam couldn’t stop him in time.
It was at this moment that Josiah seemed to suddenly realize the presence of someone upstairs, his expression changing slightly.
In contrast, Scarlett remained calm, clearly already aware.

By then, Lucas had already reached the bottom of the stairs, wearing loose slippers, and barged into the side room, pointing at Josiah as he began to shout.
“What’s wrong with your entire family? The women are heartless, the men hypocritical! Your sister pushed her out in front of a car, and when she mentions it, she’s being petty. Why don’t you try getting hit by a car yourself?
Oh, judging by that arm in a sling, it seems you’ve already been hit, right? When you got into an accident and went to the hospital, why didn’t you have the doctor check your head? You must’ve hit your head pretty badly, huh?”
